Lasik

I'm going under the knife on Friday. Or is it the laser? But after wearing glasses for most of my adult life and a contact lens for the last 13 years, I decided to try the surgical solution to nearsightedness.

I know a lot of people who have either had Lasik recently or who know people who had it, and everyone I know has only good things to say about it. Nonetheless, I'm a bit nervous - anything concerning the eyes freaks me out. But I hate glasses, and I'm tired of accidentally knocking a contact askew by rubbing my eyes, so I'm going ahead with the procedure.

Wish me luck.

Good luck. Haven't met a person who's had it done that didn't love it afterwards. Sure you will, too.

I'm still gonna call you four-eyes.

My eye doctor is also a surgeon and she mentions it from time to time. I
think she thinks I have money. I've become so used to glasses and con-
tacts it just doesn't appeal to me. I know a lot of people who have had it
done and have never heard any bad reports.

The guy here with the douche bag neighbors had it done and there's a
whole thread floating around here somewheres (probably while you were
sequestered in Tibet).

Well, I only need one done, so that's half the dough.

I'll take a look for soup's thread - thanks for the heads up.

(New Brunswick, NJ may be a world unto its own, but it ain't no Tibet....)

ON EDIT - I looked around, but couldn't find the soup eye thread. Soup - when did you have your Lasik? Are you happy with the results?

I can't find it either - I think the thread title was 'Jeepers Creepers' (how fucking wry am I?).

I had it done to both eyes last March - almost a year now and I can't say enough great things about it.

Took a good 2-3 months before my eyes were completely normal - and by that I don't mean that I couldn't see for 8-12 weeks, just that it took that long for everything to finally settle in.

During my proceedure I was very uncomfortable and tense but that was really only because I was very nervous and expecting it to be uncomfortable. It was painless and fast. I think I was done in under 20 minutes. If I were to have it done again today I would be completely relaxed and would have no discomfort whatsoever.

A lot of people walk out of the proceedure and can see right away, but a lot can't. I was one that couldn't. It took me until the next day before my sight was really okay. I could see when I got out of the doctor's office but it was a smart thing having someone with me to take me home.

Once my sight was better I still had issues with halos around lights for a good while. Make sure you look at lights before you go in so you know what the halo effect is before you get the surgery. You might think its much worse than it actually is after the surgery because you won't remember what is like beforehand (does that make sense?).

Anyway the halo stuff was annoying and it takes a while to completely dissipate. Don't be nervous - it will go away completely eventually.

Today my eyes are great, I can read things from far away that I never could even with glasses. don't have seperate glasses and prescription sunglasses that I have to constantly put on and off. No contact lens crap to deal with. No glasses fogging up when I go inside after being outside, no glasses slip-asliding off my sweaty nose, etc., etc.

And chicks dig me even more than they used to!

Thanks for the descriptions and accounts of the procedure. Although I can live without the chicks <g>

Cool - glad to hear the good follow up news :)

Lasik postscript - it went ok. My vision isn't perfect yet, but I'm definitely not nearsighted anymore.

It wasn't painful. But I gotta tell you, it is freaky being awake during eye surgery.

Now all that's left is five days of eyedrops, a week of sunglasses, 5-7 days without running, etc.

I'm back from my post-op appointment. The eye looks fine and my vision is great. I have a minimal amount of the halo effect (thanks soup for the heads up on that), but basically my vision is better than expected 24 hours later.

When I go back on Thursday I'll get a letter that I can take to DMV so I can get the vision restriction removed from my driver's license.

It was still freaky going through the procedure. But the benefits greatly outweigh the 15 minutes of anxiety.

I had my one week(ish) checkup today, and got the clearance to wear eye makeup again, etc. Everything looks good.

Then I took my clearance letter to Motor Vehicles, and got the restriction lifted from my license :)

LOL - it's actually harder for me to read very small print now. Eventually I'll need reading glasses, but for now I'm making due without them (except for the tiny print on coupons, etc.). But both eyes are good for distance now, which is better for driving, etc.
