OxyContin

The results are in and one of the active ingredients in Heath Ledger's prescription OD is OxyContin. Abuse seems to be growing rapidly.

I only heard of this stuff recently, because folks associated with my family have been known to abuse it. Apparently (and you probably know more than I do), folks empty the capsules out and sublimate it and shoot it like heroin, earning it the derogatory nickname "Hillbilly Heroin."

The stuff that gets by the FDA these days is shocking. It had been marketed as safe and non-addictive.

It's a lethal drug and gets prescribed a lot , very common for it to be prescribed say after back surgery for pain and very easy to get hooked on it in a terrible way.

The "Hillbilly Heroin" tag makes it seem like it's a problem in poorer parts of the country or in certain social classes but that's just not true. Plenty of so called normal people with families and good jobs get on that stuff and end up hooked and screwed and dead.

Yeah, I didn't want to give any credibility to that tag. Doctors have gotten hooked and are spiking themselves within a matter of weeks.

The addicts go to jail for the deceptions they use to get their fix, while Purdue Pharma, still markets the stuff?

Thanks, Mr. Mayor of the World.

7 years ago, my wife got rushed to the ER with severe abdominal pain.

The diagnosis was a kidney stone, but before they could xray they had to do a pregnancy test. They do this with women in order to protect the fetus from radiation (if the test is positive I think they do a sonogram or something instead). So much to our surprise the preggo test comes back positive. Have you met my daughter?

Anyway, the pain is really severe but she's pregnant so what they can give her for the pain is a short list. At the top of that list however is OxyContin which they give her a prescription for. Seven years ago no one had ever heard of this crap, including us.

We fill the 'scrip. She takes it once, makes her nauseous, she never takes it again.

Months later OxyContin is all over the news because people are breaking into drug stores stealing the shit left and right.

That's my OxyContin-found-out-we're-pregnant-story.

Over the years, through several maladies, doctors had been prescribing Vicodin to me. I took it a few times for some BAD pain but mostly shelved it. The Mrs. and I cleaned out the medicine drawer the other day and found three full vials of Vitamin V with two refills attached to each. Apparetnly, once you've graduated from Vicodin, OxyContin is next on the ladder. There's some bad shit floating around...being dished out by "medical professionals".
