Vacations 2008

Leaving for Rome on Friday for 9 days. Renting an apartment with the missus, Lenny, two friends and their son near the Piazza Navona. Hoping that Soup and Wolf's parody will be done by the time I get back.

Have a great trip!

I guess someone has to follow sharpie's 9 days in Rome with their vacation plans, so it might as well be me. Our vacation plans pale in comparison. We are currently planning 8 days in Seattle (around a 3 day work related meeting for me) in late June. Then, we plan on spending a week relaxing on the beaches of Ocracoke Island in August.

Seattle for a coupla days at the end of March.

A 4 day stay in North Carolina/Virginia at the end of April. Will be in Charlotte, Greensboro and Charlottesville, VA. Have a free day -- any suggestions of stuff to do in that area? (Monticello is the only thing on my radar).

Willets Point - "Charlottesville is a lovely town to stroll and Monticello is a must-see. Any free time could be spent on the Skyline Drive and/or Blue Ridge Parkway."

Good advice Willets. Definitely the high points of a trip to the Charlottesville area. My mother lives in the Charlottesville area so I spend a fair amount of time in the region. There is an old water powered grist mill that has been converted to a restaurant, bar, and souvenir shop on the road from Charlottesville to Monticello. It's worth a stop along the way to or from Monticello. Further up the road lies Ash Lawn - Highland, the former Jefferson's neighbor, James Monroe. It is much more modest in grandeur and scope than Jefferson's Monticello, but still an interesting historical stop with beautiful grounds and free roaming peacocks. Monticello sets on the next mountaintop past Monroe's home.

The scenic vistas from the overlooks of the Blue Ridge Parkway are beautiful on a clear day. Some nice walking trails along the route as well. The deer along the BRP are tame enough to get within a few feet.

Gonna be in Florida for a little over a week in March. Part vacation, part visits to family and friends. Will include a trip to Port St. Lucie to see the Mets play the Indians of Cleveland, and a couple of days in the Everglades.

Still planning this year's "big" trip. Thanks to The Brady Bunch the kids very much want to go to Hawaii and I'm hoping to be able to work that out. The airfares are higher than I want to spend, but that rebate check from Uncle Sam, if applied to plane reservations, will go a long way to making the cost palatable.

Visiting my parents near West Palm Beach in early April.. Missing the Mets play the Marlins by two days! GRRRRR.

But St. Lucie is in Jupiter -- about 5 miles from the folks -- and then home, so I'll get to see what's left of our farm system a couple times at least.

And, sometime this summer, I WILL get to Shea!

Back from Roma.

In whatever answer/ask is called now someone asked where you would live if you had to leave the US for good. Rome might be it for me. Great art, great food, the whole la dolce vita thing. Rented a swell apartment near the Piazza Navona and pretty much did and saw everything I wanted to do and/or see. Weather in the high 50's-low 60's every day while it snowed here. No baseball games going on so I feel I didn't miss much here but there were a surprising amount of Irish pubs around town -- the one nearest our apartment advertised that they showed MLB games. I would totally hang out there.

Asheville is a small, vibrant city set amid the Blue Ridge Mountains. A beautiful area, particularly in the spring or fall. The Biltmore Estate and the historic Grove Park Inn are two sites well worth visiting. Beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls abound in the immediate surrounding area. There are some great restaraunts (some with great mountaintop views) and several good local theatres. Due to it's elevation, Asheville enjoys rather mild summer temparatures, for a southern city.

Asheville is a truly wonderful setting for a photography enthusiast like myself. My wife and I really like Asheville.

My daughter goes to school in Asheville. I've been there many times (and I'll be back at the end of this month). Great place for many of the reasons Doc mentioned. Sometimes you feel like you've stepped into Berkeley of the 1970's. A lot to like about that place.

No, no Puerto Rico for me this year.

I've been there twice, though. Once for a week and a half, traveling around the island a bit, and the second time was a four-day weekend and we stuck close to San Juan.

It's a beautiful island, and I love the Caribbean food. There are some places that are more worth visiting than others, though. I've never been to Rincon or Cayey, so I don't know anything about them. But I was disappointed in Ponce. (And I really like San Juan.)

metirish
May 23 2008 08:59 AM

Cayey is just north of Ponce , I didn't like Ponce either and from what my wife tells me most people not from Ponce don't like it either , the people from there apparently think they are better than the rest.

I didn't like it probably becasue it was a Sunday when we were there and nothing was open ,except the fire house museum which was quite cool.

We stayed in San Juan for a week last time , actually it was Isle Verde ,loved it.

Just in time to get your greenbacks on the Mets to win it all.

There's nothing on the calendar yet for October, but if you've never been to the Troubadour, it's my favorite place to see a show out here. West LA (but away from Sunset), it's easy to get to, close parking for like $8, and the venue is small and cozy and sounds great. Bands that should or could be playing bigger rooms play there all the time.

I can't stop going on vacation. This chick I'm crazy about from Memphis is flying to LA in a couple days and then we're driving back to Tennessee, stopping to see every wigwam, giant ball of twine, and enormous plaster dinosaur that Route 66 has to offer. We're going to see/meet friends and family along the way, and maybe camp in some places we're not supposed to.

Me = psyched.

Then we've got Telluride in 3 weeks to get our bluegrass on.

Boo jobs! Boo!

Believe it or not, I've never actually been to L.A. The show I'm coming to see will probably be at the L.A. Sports Arena but depending on timing I may have a couple other days to do things.

I need a vacation. Where do you go with babies?

sharpie
Jun 13 2008 07:05 AM

I always did lakes and beaches with babies. Beaches have the problem of them gobbling up sand but the surf is a source of fascination. Lakes are nice, you can hold them and dip them in the still water. Urban vacations, my favorite, are out for a few years.

The pressure of going to visit family for vacations is always greater when you have a baby in tow.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 13 2008 07:33 AM

We went to Ogunquit, Maine in 2001 when my daughter was two and a half months old. (That's where we were on September 11.) The following spring, when she was ten months, we went to Puerto Rico.

When my son was two and a half, we went to Spain. You can take a baby or a toddler anywhere you want. Just be aware that it will be a different kind of vacation than if you were traveling childless. As long as you're willing to adjust to your child's needs, you can pretty much go anywhere.

seawolf17
Jun 13 2008 08:39 AM

The problem that we found with MiniWolf over the past two years is that not only does the day more or less end at 7 pm, which can be a crimp when you're on vacation somewhere, but he had a hard time going to sleep when we were in the room; he wanted to stay up and play.

So we haven't done much by way of vacations in the last two years. But we're hoping to change that this summer, using some family weddings as an excuse to get out of the house.

I'm actually writing this from Rochester, NY right now, as we're just finishing up the annual SUNYCAP (SUNY College Admissions Professionals) annual conference (I got an award, but didn't win election to the executive board). I love Rochester. Dinosaur BBQ for lunch the other day, possibly a garbage plate before I leave town. Good times.

Beach: All the sand you can eat!

Really we found you can save $$ on vacation with kids by choosing areas that don't have a lotta highend shopping & dining, since you won;t get much of a chance to use that stuff anyway (for example, efficiency in Hollywood Fla vs. luxury hotel in South Beach). They both have pools and beaches, that's all you're gonna get anyway.

We are taking Jr. out to a lake & cabin in PA in a few weeks. Wifey was afraid of full-blown "camping" just yet but I was all for it, so we compromised.

We'll let ya know how it goes.

I lived in St. Louis from 1987-1991...prolly changed a lot since then, but...

- Fairy is right about the Arch.

- McGurk's, at 12th and Russell in Soulard, was a great Irish bar. I checked the web - it's still there. No idea if it's still good.

- The Soulard Market, sort of in that same area - fun to walk around, good for fresh veggies, fresh meats, and probably lunch. If you've ever been to the West Side Market in Cleveland or even the Arthur Avenue Market up in the Bronx, it's the same basic idea.

- The Anheuser-Busch brewery tour used to be good in the eighties, but not so much anymore. If you're interested, the brewery is on Pestalozzi St., not too far from McGurk's.

- If you can get out to University City, Cicero's on Delmar Blvd. usually has good live music. It's where Wilco/Son Volt got their start as Uncle Tupelo. The area is very college-y, as it's right near Wash U. I think the light rail stops at Delmar.

- Don't miss Forest Park - designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, has a decent (free) art museum, a pretty good (also free) science center, and an excellent (and - yes - free) zoo. They used to have some good theater (cheap or maybe even free) in the amphitheater in summer.

The art museum has air conditioning. In August in St. Louis, that's enough of a reason to go there.

- The botanical garden, not too far from Forest Park - also pretty nice. And Yogi Berra grew up around there. Check out the phone book - I think there's something like two pages of Berras. The neighborhood - called The Hill - is St. Louis's historically Italian neighborhood and is the place to go for Italian food.

Got back today. Had several fish tacos. Fish are deep fried, kind of like fish 'n' chips fish so they hold up in a taco. First one was very good, the other two times I had them they were just okay.

Saw the Padres get bitchslapped by the Braves. Stadium was pretty nice, though, and they had $1 hot dogs, $1 soda and $1 off all beer.

Zoo, Sea World, beaches, side trip to Tijuana -- good time had by all.

It sure is hot here, though.

Heading up to Cape Cod for a few days starting tomorrow.
The last time we were up there around the trading deadline, I was able to get WFAN at night. I heard that they had picked up an outfielder - Jose Cardenal.
I thought "sheesh, what do they want with an old fogey like him?"
When I got home, I looked him up.
He's a week younger than I am.

I hope they don't get anyone a week younger (or older) than I am this time.

I am heading out on a three-month trip starting Thursday. I've been planning and saving for it for years now. I almost can't believe it's a few days away. Of course, I'll miss the entire rest of the season, though if the Mets end up making the playoffs I'll probably order the radio package and end up sleep deprived. Honestly, the Mets part of the equation is the only real reason I'm nervous about leaving the US behind for a while.

Anyway, here's the itinerary:

# Tokyo, Japan: 8/1 - 8/5
# Kyoto, Japan: 8/5 - 8/11
# Hong Kong, China: 8/11 - 8/13
# Guangzhou, China: 8/13 - 8/15
# Yangshuo, China: 8/15 - 8/22
# Kunming, China: 8/22 - 8/31
# Hanoi, Vietnam: 8/31 - 9/5
# Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam - 9/6 - 9/11
# Cambodia - 9/11 - 9/15
# Thailand - 9/15 - 9/30
# Australia - 10/1 - 10/15
# New Zealand - 10/15 - 10/31

I'll have a blog up before I leave which I'll post to as much as possible. I'll drop the URL here in a follow-up post. I'm not too frequent of a poster here, but I figured I'd let you all know why I'm suddenly disappearing (again), and give you the option to follow along if you're so inclined.

Last time I took two consecutive weeks, it was for my honeymoon 13 years ago.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 28 2008 07:26 AM

Geez, that sounds great.

My record for length of vacation as a grownup is 18 nights. (A trip to Italy in 2004.)

Have you been to Asia before? I was there once (two weeks in Japan in 2006) and it was a terrific trip, but we were somewhat off-balance the whole time. In three months you'll certainly have more time to get acclimated, but if you're an Asian newbie be prepared for a wide variety of challenges. (And I mean that in a good way, of course. Getting out of your comfort zone is one of the wonderful things about international travel.)

It should be an outstanding experience. I don't know what your family situation is; how many people will you be traveling with, and what's your relationship to them?

Enjoy!

Has anyone else had a bad experience visiting Japan? When I was there I stayed a night in Narita and could not get a drink anywhere. I was walking around town about 9ish at night with two friends and every bar we went into, someone would stop us at the door and tell us they were closed, despite being packed with people. We kept being pointed to two bars in town, one was a gaudy Irish-style pub playing heinous techno and full of drunken ex-pats and I'm 90% sure the other was a gay karaoke joint. Some of the other bars would have signs over the doors saying things like "No Foreigners Allowed".

I wound up working so much while I was there that that night was the only time I got a chance to go into town. I don't know if my experience is typical, but it basically turned me off to ever visiting there again.

Thanks, all, for the good wishes. We are very excited. To answer the questions that were asked... I am traveling with my wife of 3 years. She recently received her Masters in speech pathology, and we had been planning to take this trip between the end of her program and the beginning of her new career. I have been working in advertising for the last 4 years, and have been looking to make a career change for a while (not sure to what, I'm looking for inspiration). I've been freelancing for the past 3 months, so I was able to determine my exit date.

I've never been to Asia, and I am absolutely expecting challenges. I've backpacked through western Europe for 2 months, but so many people speak English there and the infrastructure is so similar and well-developed that it's really not much of an issue. Japan and Hong Kong won't be bad, Australia and New Zealand should be easy, and the areas we'll traveling to in Thailand and Cambodia are familiar with tourists. China and Vietnam may be the big challenges.

That's what trips like these are all about for me, though. The challenge of experiencing and navigating through other cultures is a thrill for me, even if it leads to some variously sized bumps in the road.

I'll definitely be taking pictures and posting them to Picasa occasionally, and I'll have links on the blog (which I swear I'll post before I leave).

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 28 2008 12:06 PM

Don't expect everyone you encounter in Japan to be able to speak English. I took Japanese lessons for six months before going to Japan and there were a bunch of times where I was the one who had to close the language gap.

If you're in a restaurant, a hotel, or a cab, you have a good chance of speaking English with a younger person; English is part of the school curriculum. But anyone older than, maybe, 40, is a different story.

I will be paying attention to the trials and tribulations of the Mets, probably mostly through newspapers although if any of my hotels have free Internet PCs in the lobby I'll probably use them as time permits.

When I return, will the Mets be firmly in first place? Hopelessly out of the race? Or somewhere in between, poised to enter an exciting or exasperating September? Time will tell. Frankly I can use a break from them after the way the last week has gone.

Fucking guilty as charged.

I'd known this girl through our volunteer group for a while before I finally decided to break up with this other girl and go after the right one. The day I'm gonna call her up and ask her out, she sends an email saying she's moving to TN. Well fuck me. Let's go for farewell drinks anyway, I say, and we do, and after that first time we hang out, I made her this hastily thrown together mix before our second date, or whatever, which lasted a couple of awesome days. Then some more days. Then she finally moved. It's like "Brief Encounter" or some shit. Bah.

California/Tennessee Battle Royale Mix CD Throwdown Vol. I

1) "Los Angeles" - Frank Black
2) "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" - Cat Power
3) "Big Sur" - The Thrills
4) "Tennessee Square" - Whiskeytown
5) "California" - Phantom Planet
6) "Ramblin' Man" - The Allman Brothers Band
7) "California Stars" - Wilco/Billy Bragg
8) "Graceland" - Willie Nelson
9) "Why You'd Want to Live Here" - Death Cab for Cutie
10) "Knoxville Girl" - The Lemonheads
11) "Los Angeles" - X
12) "Pride (In the Name of Love)" - U2
13) "California" - Jay Farrar
14) "Nashville to Kentucky" - My Morning Jacket

It was ballsy going with the Cat Power and Lemonheads versions instead of Dylan and the Louvin Brothers, but I think I pulled it off. Vol II. was a heavy-hitter, too. I'm running out of ammo for Vol. III.

The board struck the shore in three-quarters of a second, without any cargo, and I struck the bottom about the same time, with a couple of barrels of water in me." -- Mark Twain, Roughing It, 1866

Final vacation was last Friday. Went to Pittsburgh for the Mets game. Stayed at the Westin which also happened to be the Mets hotel (found out that tidbit as we arrived).

Notes:
1. Pulled up to the valet and stopped right in front of Heilman (waiting for a taxi). I know, I know. I could have ended it all for him right there with a quick jerk to the right with the steering wheel. As it turned out, he came up key that night.

2. The hotel lobby was jammed with fans, er, I mean autograph hounds. Charlie Samuels came out of nowhere and yelled at the security guards, "We want none of this. The players want privacy. Get these people out of here!" Quite a people person I guess. Anyhoo, security and some of Pittsburgh's finest came in and cleared it out pretty good.

3. Checked into the room and I hung out with Toddler Ted. Mrs. Ted went to the restaurant and a few of the players were grabbing some food before the game. Tatis, Beltran, and Ollie Perez, who not only was finishing off some sushi, but was toting this rather feminine looking Man Bag...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41KZE34HDWL._SS500_.jpg

4. Stadium, as always, was great. Surrounded by Mets fams, probably 30-40 percent wearing blue and orange. More autograph hounds at the hotel after the game, different than the before-game autograph hounds.

5. Woke up early Saturday for breakfast. Jay Horwitz was at the concierge desk looking like he just woke up. Wanted to ask him if he's read MBTN, but he scurried to the elevator. He's taller than I thought, maybe 6-feet tall. There was a buffet set up for the team next to the restaurant. No one came down for breakfast.

5. Love the stadium. PGH is OK. Getting there from anywhere is hell.
