Fun with iPod

In keeping with the 'albums you really like' thread....

On your iPod and iTunes under playlists is one entitled 'Top 25 Most Played'.

Here are my top 10 of those 25. This goes back I would say 2 & 1/2 years. After looking at it I think I'm solidly hetero but could possibly have 'tendencies'. The Snow Patrol prevelence I think casts that slight doubt.

(Caveat - My daughter LOVES 'Stacy's Mom' and makes me play it a lot. If not for her it wouldn't be top 10 and The Strokes You Only Live Once would move up.)

Song, Band, # of times played
Eminence Front, The Who - 37
Chocolate, Snow Patrol - 29
Stacy's Mom, Fountains Of Wayne - 26
How to Be Dead, Snow Patrol - 25
Hard To Explain, The Strokes - 25
Houses Of The Holy, Led Zeppelin - 23
Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now), Cracker - 22
A Girl Like You, Edwyn Collins - 21
Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - 21
I Melt with You, Modern English - 21

So...how about you?

My top songs are skewed some by the fact I bought an iPod and learned iTunes initially to self-dj my wedding. All of these songs were a part of that, though mostly because I liked them to start with.

It Takes Two Marvin Gaye & Kim Wesson 54 plays
Pray for Me, The Jayhawks 52 plays
Tell Everybody I Know, Keb Mo 46 plays
King of Love, Dave Edmunds 44 plays
Jumpin' with Symphony Sid, Joe Jackson, 42 plays
T.M.D., Marshall Crenshaw, 37 plays
Camel Walk, Southern Culture on the Skids, 37 plays
New Train, John Prine, 36 plays
Real Rock Drive, The Blasters 35 plays
Baby Ride Easy, Dave Edmunds, 35 plays

**
Rocking up the charts is The Cheese Song by Bubboon, which is Junior Shot's favorite. 29 plays and we've only had it for a short while.

I shuffle a lot and the iPod seems fond of playing songs that I wouldn't necessarily play over and over myself. With that caveat this is a fair sample of my music listening the past three years:

"Frontier Psychiatrist" The Avalanches
"parlez-vous freezepop" Freezepop
"Two of Us" The Beatles
"Wind and Rain" Crooked Still
"Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac" Dizzy Gillespie
"Anna (El Negro Zumbon)" Pink Martini
"Misery Is The River of the World" Tom Waits
"Still, Still, Still" Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
"A Night in Tunisia" Ella Fitzgerald
"Farewell Nova Scotia" Dan Zanes

My top 10 is deeply skewed by my running playlist:

Suicide Blonde - INXS - 57
Rearviewmirror - Pearl Jam - 56
Me in Honey - REM - 45
Green River - Creedence Clearwater Revival - 43
No Surrender - Bruce Springsteen - 41
Dancing in the Street - Martha and the Vandellas - 39
Little Mascara - The Replacements - 38
I Will Follow - U2 - 38
London Calling - The Clash - 37
Come See About Me - The Supremes - 36

"Baby, Ride Easy" is Dave Edmunds with the woefully underrated country-new wave crossover Carlene Carter. I kind of suspect her behind the breakup of Rockpile.

My ten also have a lot to do with what I bought first, and then I built on those early purchases slowly. I had a Pet Sounds nut living down stairs. I consider the album great but flawed. You'd think I knifed his mother. So I gave PS a closer listen for a bit. Eh.

1) "Wouldn't It Be Nice? (Stereo Version)" 2:33 The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Rock 30
2) "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" [Stereo Version] 2:58 The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Rock 28
3) "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (Stereo Version)" 3:21 The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Rock 27
4) "The French Song" 3:37 Joan Jett And The Blackhearts Fetish Rock 27
5) "Dear Prudence (Single Version)" 4:01 Siouxsie and The Banshees Hyaena Rock 27
6) "Boots of Spanish Leather" 4:40 Bob Dylan The Times They Are A-Changin' Rock 26
7) "That's Not Me (Stereo Version)" 2:31 The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Rock 25
8) "I'm Waiting for the Day (Stereo Version)" 3:07 The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Rock 25
9) "When Love Breaks Down" 4:07 PreFab Sprout Prefab Sprout: The Collection Rock 25
10) "How Men Are" 3:39 Aztec Camera Just Say Yes... Rock 24

I have no idea what this is but I can't wait to get home and download it just because I want to be able say that, yes, I do in fact speak Freezepop.

And P.S. irish - I dig that Manic Street Preachers stuff more every time I hear it.

I do some shuffling, but mostly rotate a lot; it's unusual for me to play an album twice in a month, so my numbers are skewed by the one or two that I did play often. I also listen to albums from start to finish, so the number of most of their songs clump together.

"Where Have all the Good Times Gone?" -- The Kinks
"La Scala di Seta" -- (Rossini) Montreal Symphony
"Guillaume Tell" -- (Rossini) Montreal Symphony
"Catch Me Now I'm Falling" -- The Kinks
"Stop Your Sobbing" -- The Kinks
"Victoria" -- The Kinks
"So What" -- Miles Davis
"Freddy Freeloader" -- Miles Davis
"Flamenco Sketches" -- Miles Davis
"Il Barbliglia di Seville" -- (Rossini) Montreal Symphony

The odd thing is that I haven't listened to any of these this year.

Here's a more recent and more detailed analysis.

Weird top ten for me:

Hey There Delilah -- Plain White T's (I played this over and over while writing my parody)
Afternoon Delight -- Will Ferrell et al (from Anchorman -- love it.)
Bones -- The Killers
Take Tomorrow (One Day At A Time) -- Butch Walker
The Pretender -- Foo Fighters
Long Road To Ruin -- Foo Fighters
Oklahoma Bound -- Jeff Keith
Plus Ones -- Okkervil River
Band On The Run -- Foo Fighters
Time Won't Let Me Go -- The Bravery

There was a period when I had a few of those songs on a playlist that I (apparently) played the hell out of, which really skewed the number. Most times I'm on random shuffle.

Here's the whole Top 25 Play list. (I actually changed it to !Top 25 Played so it comes up first)

One disclaimer: My 15-year-old son works out of the same iTunes, so if he and I both like a song it climbs up the chart fast. Also, he loves the show "Supernatural," which uses a lot of classic rock songs that he then plays over and over, hence the Sabbath, Kansas and Blue Oyster Cult)

1) “Must Have Done Something Right” Relient K (163)
2) “The Shadow Proves the Sunshine” Switchfoot (144)
3) “Dead Man (Carry Me)” Jars of Clay (138)
4) “Hands and Feet” Audio Adrenaline (132)
5) “Light Gives Heat” Jars of Clay (122)

You know, I realize I should have just used my last.fm log. That says:

1 Ludwig van Beethoven – Allegro con brio
2 The Beatles – Come Together
3 Johann Sebastian Bach – Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F Major
4 The Moody Blues – Lovely to See You
4 The Beatles – Something
4 Pink Floyd – Coming Back to Life
7 The Moody Blues – The Dream (Poem)
7 The Moody Blues – Are You Sitting Comfortably f
7 Rick Wakeman – Catherine of Aragon
7 Montreal Symphony - Charles Dutoit – La scala di seta
7 Traffic – Paper Sun
7 The Moody Blues – The Voyage
7 The Moody Blues – In the Beginning
7 The Moody Blues – To Share Our Love full track

The Beethoven #1 is not quite correct; I have four different pieces of longer pieces that have that title (Symphonies #3, #5, #7, and the Piano Concerto #1).

A dbs fanatic! Right here in our very midst!

I saw the deebs open for Lou in 1984. I wish I could remember much about them. I think it was about the time they were closest to making it, with a single called "Love Is for Lovers" in modest rotation here and there.

Mr. Zero
Feb 14 2008 03:34 PM

During that "Love is For Lovers" period I remember them pulling out a fine version of "Suspicious Minds" for the encore. I probably last saw them in 05. They seem to regroup for a couple shows every year or two, that is, when Peter Holsapple is not busy playing sideman for REM or (yikes!) Hootie and the Blowfish.
