2009 25-Man Roster

This is likely going to be a very different team from the one I'm projecting now, and also a very different team from the one that'll open 2008.

But look, they're all optionless, though Johnson is currently under a minor league contract.

I wonder if Omar will go after Derek Lowe. He's a FA and had a good season:

However, he's 35.

That one was months old. I was smarter then.

Bad luck, Chris Aguila.

Derek Lowe has always struck me as a jerk.

Sep 29 2008 08:06 AM

they're definitely going to pick up delgado's option.
only issue is might they try and negotiate 2 year deal at lower average instead of picking it up.

The interesting dilemmas are about guys who came up and succeeded, for me specifically Tatis and Murphy.

I really think we should be getting Murphy to go and work out at 2nd base.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 29 2008 08:32 AM

I have to say it: I covet Sabathia. I don't know if he's a realistic possibility at all, but probably the most reliable way to improve the bullpen is to get a starter who will throw a lot of innings. It's not my money, and "the brand is sound."

AG/DC
Sep 29 2008 08:44 AM

Murphy will be training at second in the offseason. So it has been written. In the meantime, I have him dressing with the outfielders.

Sabathia is sticky. We set a baseline for a lefthanded ace when we signed Santana, and it was a high one. If somebody is going to pay over $20 mills per for seven or more years for a pitcher with that body, it may just have to be the Yankees. And I may just have to live with it.

Every post-season start will change his price so it should be interesting.

I've been reading that CC wants to stay in the NL and that he wants to either stay with the Brewers or go to a California team. His wife is pushing hard for the latter.

Which of the horrible guys are under contract for next year?

Castillo, obviously, for another three.
Schoenweis for one?
Marlon Anderson for one?
Duaner Sanchez?

I can't wait for next season. The Mets are a playoff team. They were a playoff team this year as well. They were better than both the Brewers and the Phillies and without Willie Randolph around anymore to fuck up even one game, next year's Mets are already better off than last year.

you'd think that'd bump argenis off.

tatis backing up 3rd and 1st
marlon backing up 3rd, 1st and 2nd (in a stretch) and SS (while doing the splits)
castillo and murphy basically doing 2nd.

it looks to me that the payroll next year for the current 25-man roster will be about $110M, without bringing in any big-ticket players.

If Fred spent around $140M this year, is he willing to pony up another $30m next year, in his new stadium? I would hope so.

Edgy DC
Oct 31 2008 10:23 AM

Great. I think, since Argenis is currently our only middle infield backup, that leaves Angel Pagan on the outside looking in. He has no options but (1) things will change, and (2) he could get a rehab assignment.

It's still, of course, looking a lot like last year's roster --- at least on the offensive side. This mans that unless/until they clear Anderson and/or Castillo out of there, there's no room for Murphy in the infield no matter how hard one may wish it.

Disagree. There's absolutely room for Murphy as a second baseman, even if they want to keep Castillo and Anderson both on the roster next year.

I think you are mislabeling Anderson as an infielder. In 2007-2008 with the Mets, Anderson logged a total of 37 innings in the infield, 34 of which were at first base. He had 256 innings in the outfield during the same time period.

Edgy DC
Oct 31 2008 01:36 PM

Good enough. Marlon's your outfielder orn our next update. Though I submit that he's got the majority of his PT there due to the Mets overstocking on reserve infielders forcing many of them into outfield duty.

...and, by overstocking on reserve infielders, they don't have a real backup oufielder who can hit reliably.

I think the Mets should just bite the bullet and cut Anderson.

Tatis, while technically an infielder, gives me more confidence in the outfield that Anderson or Easley (or Valentin, Woodward, et al) did.

In the Battle of the Huge Hole Now Left in the Rotation, I'm spotting propect Parnell ahead of retreads Knight and Stokes (who stays penbound).

It's nice to get a Sean Green who spells his name with some respect.

Reed is an interesting-looking fella --- a little like Joel Youngblood and a little like Darren Bragg. That's probably the player we're getting also.

With Green replacing Smith, is it premature to name a memorial roster spot for side-armers after my hero Terry Leach?
Or are they so rare, the spot may not be possible to keep filled?
You decide.

MFS62
Dec 11 2008 07:57 AM

Oops.
I guess when I first suggested the Donn Clendenon spot as "memorial" that's what it meant. But as other spots have been named, I didn't notice that they had been named for ex-Mets who had passed away.

I just mentioned this as a place for sidearmers. But if it is for the dearly departed, it is highly premature.

Adam Bostick is a festering sore on the face of the organization. Omar kept this easily replaceable journeyman on the roster, protected from the Rule V Draft. As a result, there was no room to protect catching prospect J. Flores and he was lost in the draft.
Why is Bostick still here? On the chance that one day Omar MIGHT be able to say he made the right move?
Bull feathers.
Ain't gonna' happen.
Get him outta' here already.

Yeah, that makes sense.

MFS62
Jan 11 2009 12:09 PM

It wasn't intended to make sense. (And obviously it succeeded. :) )
It was meant as a rant.
I really don't want to see this guy again, sorta' like the way Sonny Corleone thought about "that strutz".
Or the way one of the other CPF-ers feels about Marlon Anderson.
Purely visceral.

Some more infill added yesterday. Kyle Snyder is a veteran of some dreadful Kansas City staves, who turned in a good season in 2007 when the Sawx moved him full-time to the bullpen. Jon Switzer got hammered for the Devil Rays from 2003-2007, but always turned in good minor league numbers.

My experience is the Mets haven't been carrying spot starters, so I assembled the most likely bullpen comprised of relief pitchers, but, yeah, that should be subject to review.

Redding hasn't pitched yet, stuck in port with back discomfort. Making a statement in hit-or-miss position is Darren O'Day, with 3.1 scoreless so far. Nelson Figueroa is also scoreless over three innings.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

O'Day has looked good, and has the Rule 5 thing going for him... but he's a similar-style guy to Green, no? (Sidewinding, ROOGYish righty.)

Aren't they still paying Bobby Bonilla $1 million per year?
And, I didn't add up your numbers about the current salary level. But I thought I read a while ago (couldn't find a link) that club contributions to health insurance, etc. are added to a team's salary for porposes of calculating whether or not they pay the tax.

Met fans seem to obsess on this issue like they're the ones paying him?
When they cut him with one year remaining on his deal they agreed to spread out the remaining payments over time via an annuity instead of paying it all up front.
He is NOT still on the payroll.

I believe they are. Also average annual salaries are used when dealing with multi-year deals rather than the fluctuating figures which are sometimes built into such contracts.
I don't know why any of this matters though. It's not like anyone has ever declared that spending right up to the lux-tax limit is the ideal payroll level.

Adam Rubin has projected the Opening Day roster. He thinks that Livan will be called up when needed which creates an opening on the bench. I put Keilty in the Evans spot from the start and either O'Day or Cherry instead of Parnell as the Mets keep one of the Rule V guys.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starters:
Brian Schneider, c
Carlos Delgado, 1b
Luis Castillo, 2b
David Wright, 3b
Jose Reyes, ss
Daniel Murphy, lf
Carlos Beltran, cf
Ryan Church, rf

Rotation:
Johan Santana, lhp
Mike Pelfrey, rhp
Oliver Perez, lhp
John Maine, rhp

Bench:
Ramon Castro, c
Alex Cora, if
Fernando Tatis, if/of
Marlon Anderson, of
Jeremy Reed, of
Nick Evans, 1b/of

Bullpen:
Francisco Rodriguez, rhp
J.J. Putz, rhp
Sean Green, rhp
Pedro Feliciano, lhp
Brian Stokes, rhp
Bobby Parnell, rhp
Tim Redding, rhp

Note: Livan Hernandez is the fifth starter, but because he's on a minor-league contract, the team will be able to wait to purchase his contract until Game 5 or 6, when they want to first use him. That would allow Evans to be on the bench as a righty bat for the first week. Why Evans and not Bobby Kielty? Evans can be optioned to the minors and is already on the 40-man roster; Kielty would need to clear waivers once being added to the 40-man roster.

The thing is... if Parnell gets sent north to Buffalo*, is he going as a starter or as a reliever? From what I hear/read, the scuttlebutt last year/spring is that he was getting used to going "all out" for 30 pitches or so and still being able to locate fastballs at 97... if the spring's results are indicative, it seems like he could use some work on that yet. (Since, as a starter, he was the sort of guy who threw in the low 90s and conserved his "gas.")

*Since the New Orleans-to-Buffalo made New York the home of Mets minor league ball, won't EVERYONE who isn't staying in XST or low-A technically be "coming north with the team"?

With Kunz farmed out and Sanchez released, even guys on the 40 be feeling the heat. Guys you might have thought would go before the Kunzer: Ruelas, Snyder, Switcher (don't know the difference between those two yet), and Abreu. Hang in there, Michel.

from Rotoworld:
The Mets have shut down Tim Redding indefinitely due to a lack of shoulder strength.
That should take him out of the running for the club's fifth rotation spot. Mets GM Omar Minaya said Redding isn't injured, but simply needs to build up more strength. He's posted a dreadful 40.50 ERA in two starts this spring.

While I have to hope that's not $2M straight out the window, Redding is not going to be on the Opening Day 25. So one starting spot and two bullpen spots are very wide open at this point.

1) A live arm, he sits at 94-97 MPH, but claims he used to be able to go up to 99. I don't know if used to means "before surgery," "before I left Venezuela," or "before I woke up."

2) Hails from Puerto Caballo ("Horseport"), cradle or Carlos Zambrano, as well as Ronny Cedeņo and others.

3) Spent Hurricane ike in a Luxury Suite at Minute Maid Park. Life is good even on the fringes of the big leagues.
4) Signed with the 'Stros at 16 and has been in the organization for 10 years.

5) He likes 'em waify. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/s.php ... e8358ac3d7

1) A 2002 All Star.

2) That same year --- 14th in MVP voting, Baby.

3) Won a World Series with the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks, though he didn't appear in any of the Series games. No matter, just being on that Yankee-killing roster makes him a Real American Hero.TM
4) His career began to hit the pisser (he's already retired once) in 2005 when he broke his wrist... with the Nationals... in practice... hitting off a tee.

5) In a 2006 lost season, he was signed by the Cards, benched by the Cards, demoted by the Cards, benched by the Redbirds, and, finally suspended by the Redbirds.

loads of cuts made to the camp today. None affect your proposed 25 man, but they certainly copper fasten some of the developments (Livian especially!)
[on edit] here they are
Mets optioned LHP Jon Niese, RHP Connor Robertson and catcher Robinson Cancel to Triple-A Buffalo; reassigned RHP Kyle Snyder, RHP Matt DeSalvo, LHP Jon Switzer, LHP Heriberto Rueles and LHP Casey Fossum to minor league camp.

Orange means they still have options, right?

Edgy DC
Mar 24 2009 06:48 PM

That's the idea. I'm sure there are errors, though.

And O'Day, while he technically has options, has to be offered back before he can be optioned.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Mar 24 2009 07:10 PM

So, when and if Redding comes back... assuming everyone's healthy, either Parnell or Murphy goes down, or someone gets voted off Citi Island (O'Day being offered back, or someone else via waivers/release/trade).

Yeep.

Edgy DC
Mar 24 2009 07:55 PM

If everyone is healthy and Parnell performing well by the time Redding comes back, that's a good problem to have.

Edgy DC
Mar 27 2009 09:33 PM

It's kind of disappointing to see Valentin cut loose. I'm guessing he asked to be released rather than sent to Buffalo.

I'm re-adding the memorial designations. Livan Hernandez, upon his ascension, will take over the Cardwell chair from his brother, while J.J. Putz --- by virtue of his red chin fuzz and his ability to maintain a goofy smile and a big-league career despite his last name --- will be the McGraw torchbearer until experience suggests otherwise.

Yeah, I count 36 Mets on the roster and four open slots, plus there'll be one more when the season opens and Wagner can get assigned to the 60-day disabled list, but one fewer once Hernandez gets added to the roster.

I let this thread lanuguish, but I'll not let it die. I was having trouble constructing because the MLB site stopped displaying the mugshots of all players. I was able to construct the URL through simple backdoor thinking, though.

I promise not to get behind again. This is going to be some tough hoeing before you get down to the actual roster, but it should be up to date (unless there was a transction while I was coding).

Huge array of transactions for a Met team looking to reload any way they can.

This team is missing their Clendenon and their Agee. That's a lot of pressure on Cleon Jones, so to speak.

does everyone else think it's kinda cool and ballsy going with only 5 guys with infield gloves. I love the idea that we may have a game where Sheff does a few innings at first or something like that.

Edgy DC
Jun 23 2009 10:36 AM

Well, I'm never keen on overdosing on relief pitchers, but I guess Argenis will replace Misch or Switzer in a couple of days. Meantime, I guess Reed or Sheffield can fake it at first. How many days do you really think they'll go with Tatis as their only backup at short and second?

Meanwhile, Cora is playing through a fracture.

seawolf17
Jun 23 2009 11:02 AM

Actually, what's Cleon up to? He's not much older than Sheff.

Fman99
Jun 23 2009 11:54 AM

Nice quote from the intrepid Mr. Cora on recent roster issues, courtesy of Cerrone...

The Mets current 25–man roster will earn roughly $60 million this season, or around the same level as the Rays, Orioles and Twins.

“We can deal with this. We’re not as bad as people think we are,” Alex Cora said last night, according to MLB.com. “Don’t feel sorry for the Metropolitans.”

Referring to his own team as the "Metropolitans" is balls ass cool.

Edgy DC
Jun 23 2009 11:58 AM

If Reyes went down last year, we'd've had Damion Easley filling in.

Vic Sage
Jun 23 2009 01:34 PM

i've heard repeatedly from Minaya and others that Cora is a real asset in the clubhouse. Not that i wouldn't prefer to have, you know, like a good player in that position, but he's not bad, and if he brings that dimension too, well that's cool.

Edgy DC
Jun 23 2009 01:44 PM

Yeah, I'm sure Easley was a cluhouse asset also. It's just that he didn't have much baseball left.

Alex Cora is probably as good as many starting shortstops, but lacks any standout offensive skill to get anybody excited enough to give him the job.

So you sign some Julio Lugo with more upside, he getss the job or replaces the starter when he's hurt, then moves on when they try somebody else with more upside or the stater heals. It's a living.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2009 08:18 PM

Getting away from this eight reliever nonsense is, well, a relief is what it is.

Hey, Charlie Samuels, let's say we get a real hat for Misch already. Reyes, too, while you're at it. Come on.

Yeah, I'd prefer they'd call up a clubbing firstbaseman and move the Murphis platoon to third, but that guy doesn't really exist. I guess Evans is the closest to fitting that bill there is.

Yeah, recall Evans.

MFS62
Aug 17 2009 07:17 AM

From the time I first saw his name on the Buffalo roster, I've had this feeling that I'd be seeing Mike f'n Lamb with the big club this year.
At least that still hasn't happened ..... yet.

Later

Edgy DC
Aug 17 2009 07:46 AM

I've liked Lamb. Professional hitter, pretty poor in the field but willing to fill in anywhere for Houston all those years, so they always had a body to step in when a guy got hurt. A problem with him was always that he was a lefthanded batter who tended to hit lefties hardest. Hard to figure out what to do with such guys.

He seems about done, but he's 34. That's two years older than Green, but he's done far more in his career than Green ever has.

MFS62
Aug 17 2009 08:00 AM

Yes, but as you said, he's Mike Lamb.
Like you, I would have preferred Evans (or another hitter with some pop).

We are denied Met Number 50, as we instead get a returnee.

And again, I'd've preferred another hitter and to see some of Murphy at third.

Alex Cora has been effectively disabled for months.

I hope you are bending your minds around my idea of giving Stokes a few starts, because until otherwise announced, it looks like a not-quite-savvy-enough Tim Redding, inspiration for the "Disaster" thread. is our new member of the rotation.

I probably would've preferred him to Redding this summer. Probably woulnd't have mattered either way.

Why send Misch down? They could just bring up Ken next week.

Edgy DC
Aug 24 2009 08:49 PM

I think they're running the show scared, and after needing eight innings one night from their pen, they felt they needed to be ready to tap them for eight more the next day. It doesn't help when they pull Tim Redding after 81 pitches in the best start of his season.

Instead, it's Misch who gets recalled next week.

I'd be surprised if The Schneid even takes a seat. One think about Bobby Vee was, if they brought a guy in from another team or up from the minors, he was in the lineup that night almost every time. Jerry apparently doesn't know where to play Evans apparently, not knowing he's mostly played third base in his career and the Mets are third basemanless.

I'm not sure. I think there are currently 5 open spots. But the guys on the 60 day DL have to be added back to the 40 man roster before the rule V draft. And I don't know how many of them are eligible for, or will be offered, arbitration.
