Quiz: Taking it on the chin for the team.

Thirteen times in history, a Met has given up over 100 runs in a season*, having the combination of being bad enough to get lit up, but good enough that you don't want to blow the bullpen when they are needed to relieve lesser starters the rest of the week. So they keep going out there and taking their lumps.

Who are these cats and what season did they give up their centuries.

* Fully six guys have packed it in at 99 earnies on the season. Wimps.

Mar 05 2008 08:37 AM

Are these 13 distinct pitchers, or are there some repeaters in the list?

I don't know why, but something tells me Walt Terrell in 1984 is one of the guys. This guess seems wrong but I'm going to make it anyway.

sharpie
Mar 05 2008 08:38 AM

Jack Fisher.

AG/DC
Mar 05 2008 08:40 AM

There are repeaters. The same guy may appear more than once, and the same season may appear more than once. So give me both when you answer.

Terrell '84 is incorrect. That's -1 for you.

Sharpie, get with the program.

My bad. Tracy Stallard, 1964.

His putridness was well documented in the MBTM book, bringing shame to his number!

Craig Swan? He pitched on bad teams. I'll guess 1980.

Fman99
Mar 05 2008 10:27 AM

The Amazing 1996 Mets had four guys give up 100 runs - Izzy, Pulse, Pete Harnisch and Bobby J. Jones. Though in their defense, they all gave up less than 100 earned runs.

Valadius
Mar 05 2008 10:52 AM

The '63 Mets had to have SOMEBODY give up at least 100 earned runs. How about Al Jackson?

Stallard 1964 pulled out at 95. Swannie didn't pitch enough to qualify in 1980. That was the year he tore his rotator cuff.

Hahn, we're talking earnies.

Fman, close the book. No peeking.

Jerry Koosman, 1978?

Isn't that the year Swan won the ERA title? Or was that 1978?

Swannie '79 and Koos '78 are in the clear.

I know Pete Harnisch got dragged out a lot in 1996.

Viola seemed to get smashed around a lot in 1991 despite being Frank Freaking Viola.

Some of those Torborg and Green teams still curl my toes.

I bet you're off a little. Kooz in 1977 went 8-20, and you don't get 20 losses unless you're pretty good -- if that makes sense.

At the risk of adding to my negative total, I'll poach from Grimmy and bump back a year to 1977.

Mike Torrez sucked rocks in 1983.
