Quiz: Taking it on the chin for the team.
AG/DC Mar 05 2008 08:34 AM |
Thirteen times in history, a Met has given up over 100 runs in a season*, having the combination of being bad enough to get lit up, but good enough that you don't want to blow the bullpen when they are needed to relieve lesser starters the rest of the week. So they keep going out there and taking their lumps.

Are these 13 distinct pitchers, or are there some repeaters in the list?
|
sharpie Mar 05 2008 08:38 AM |
Jack Fisher.
|
AG/DC Mar 05 2008 08:40 AM |
There are repeaters. The same guy may appear more than once, and the same season may appear more than once. So give me both when you answer.

DocTee Mar 05 2008 08:41 AM |
Roger Craig, 62.
|
Benjamin Grimm Mar 05 2008 08:44 AM |
Yeah, gotta go with the 62ers. How about Hook and Jackson?

Jack Fisher --- 1964.

I'm going to stay with Fisher for '65. I remember the ugly backs of his baseball cards.

You know, a Google image search on "ugly backs" yields surprisingly little.
|
sharpie Mar 05 2008 09:30 AM |
Staying with the early Mets I'll say Roger Craig repeated in '63.
|
AG/DC Mar 05 2008 09:32 AM |
Craig packed it in at 99 in 1963.
|
metsguyinmichigan Mar 05 2008 09:38 AM |
Tracy Stallard?

Not that I have any idea, but are we talking runs or earned runs?
|
metsguyinmichigan Mar 05 2008 10:12 AM |
|
My bad. Tracy Stallard, 1964. His putridness was well documented in the MBTM book, bringing shame to his number!
|
seawolf17 Mar 05 2008 10:25 AM |
Craig Swan? He pitched on bad teams. I'll guess 1980.
|
Fman99 Mar 05 2008 10:27 AM |
The Amazing 1996 Mets had four guys give up 100 runs - Izzy, Pulse, Pete Harnisch and Bobby J. Jones. Though in their defense, they all gave up less than 100 earned runs.
|
Valadius Mar 05 2008 10:52 AM |
The '63 Mets had to have SOMEBODY give up at least 100 earned runs. How about Al Jackson?

How about 79 for Swan? I'll keep guessing.
|

Jerry Koosman, 1978?
|
Benjamin Grimm Mar 05 2008 12:42 PM |

Isn't that the year Swan won the ERA title? Or was that 1978?
|

Three for a correct guess and minus one for an incorrectie.

Pedro Astacio - 2002

I bet you're off a little. Kooz in 1977 went 8-20, and you don't get 20 losses unless you're pretty good -- if that makes sense. At the risk of adding to my negative total, I'll poach from Grimmy and bump back a year to 1977.
|

Leiter - 1999

Harnisch 1996 had 91, a shelling short of the leader board. Viola '91 is correct. He and Astacio 2002 each gave up 102. Koosman 1977 is also in the clear. Grimm sharpie DocTee Gwreck metsguy seawolf valadius metirish

How does Doc Tee have six points? I only see him on the list one time. Or do you get double for the mostest runs?

He also has blue eyes.

Irish, how did you come up with Nino freakin' Espinosa in 1978 without peeking at sources?

OK, If Jack Fisher was that bad in 1964 and 1965, I don't see him getting much better in 1966 and 1967. In a bold move, I'll take both of those years and cross my fingers.
|
sharpie Mar 05 2008 02:32 PM |

Astacio I could imagine (though I certainly wouldn't have come up with it). I was a domestic adult (just) in 1978 and I couldn't remember that by 1979.
|

I remember Pedro giving up a shit load of home runs as a Met, so because you wouldn't have come up with that it's inconceivable that I would?.... Nino I checked on but the others are guesses.....
