... at least for now.

I don't see him coming back this time. He's got all the records, and 17 years is an eternity in the NFL.

Depends on his reasons I suppose.
There are hints that he's upset that the Pack didn't persue Randy Moss more intently while he was a FA (personally i believe there's a degree of collusion going on in the NFL, but that's a different story) and maybe this is intended as a sort of threat that he'll only come back if they structure the team more to his liking.

A degree of collusion?

i'm not sure what you mean by a "degree of collusion"

As for not pursuing Moss maybe they looked at his age and his history of on and off field issues before last season and decided to take a pass. WR isn't that team's biggest need anyway.

- Just that there never seems to be any bidding wars for NFL players; as if each team agrees to not try for a FA player until they're sure his current team intends to let him go.
- As well as the strict adherance to draft bonus limits
- And that the ban against more than single-year contracts is suspiciously adhered to by every single team every single time no matter how attractive the player
- and that the insiders' reactions to Mangini blowing the whistle on the spying incident was akin to that of a cop who exposes internal corruption
- and just the overall feeling that cooperation among teams frequently takes precedence over competition between them

Which isn't to say that I think the on-field game is fixed, far from it.
It's just that the ownership/mgmt class often seems to behave in a way that indicates their first priority is loyalty to the league (and its profits) and not rocking the boat even if that behavior isn't what's best for their team.

In this case did the Pack not go after Moss because they didn't think eh was a good sign, or were they never in the hunt because because they hadn't received some sort of sub-rosa permission?
I don't know the answer to that, but maybe Favre got fed because he saw no attempt being made and read it as unwillingness to improve.

Meanwhile, I think the folks over at ESPN are deeply in mourning.

You know John Madden is in mourning.
