Madness at our house

Rockin' Doc

It's March madness time. The field of 65 has been selected and now it's time to prove how little we actually know by filling out a bracket.

See, I actually thought you had Madness staying at your house.

I just learned that my "alma mater," Baltimore's Coppin State is in the tourney.

I never attended Coppin as a student, but I worked there on a brief assignment for a couple of months at the end of 2002. I know nothing about college basketball, but I assume they're rather a longshot. But because of my tenuous connection to them, I'm rooting for them to at least advance a few rounds.

Go Coppin!

I'm trying to get in, but it's telling me the password is incorrect.

I'm actually interested for the first time (I am not a basketball fan -- the sport is just too dull, especially since they added the shot clock.* Only the last five minutes of the game has any potential for excitement, and until some team gets a shutout, talking about defense is ludicrous).

The college where I work (Siena) is in it for the first time since 2002, and is given a chance to upset their opponent (everything would have to fall into place, but it's not like the last time, when they played Maryland the year they won the championship).

Plus, my daughter's alma mater, American University, is in it for the first time.

After the both lose (probably Friday for AU, with a slight chance of Siena making it to Sunday), I'll turn it off and not waste any more time on it.

*I found watching the four corners fascinating.

Chuck, I don't believe you remember those days. You look much younger.

Look for Tournament Challenge and find our "private" group. You'll have to register if you haven't already done so.

Hmm...not the expected pairing for "Madness" and "Our House."

When some would zig, I zag.

That's just how I roll.

Plus, far better song.

Media types spending days on end quizzing other media types about who they've got in their personal "Sweet Sixteen" -- or in their 'Elite Eight', or 'Final Four', or for their 'Cinderella', or whatever -- is an incredably mindless waste of time even though it remains an unending facination to themselves.

You are not required to pay attention to it.

I realize that of course.

It's just that I happened to be reading here last night when I turned on sports radio hoping to get some NYMets news and was immediately treated to a Q&A between the host and some talking head where each is talking about not only who's going to win in round one but also rounds 2, 3, etc.
And it occured to me while this was on in the background that while the two participants couldn't have been more engrossed in the coversation I couldn't ignore the similarity of it to the torture of listening to someone tell you every detail about his rotisserie team. Add that to the fact that this same conversation will take place hundreds of times over the coming days and weeks AND that these self-proclaimed experts generally have no better shot at winning their office pools than does the no-nothing secretary down the hall and my thoughts got transfered into a CPF rant.

We now return you to your regular hoops tourney thread already in progress.

My brother-in-law went to Duke so I kind of have a soft spot for the Blue Devils. Then again I really don't care for college basketball so I haven't had an opportunity to build up any hate.

Maybe the guys at the Slate were trying to be funny, but if they were, I fail to see the humor in anything they wrote. It would be far more constructive to praise those schools that have been successful while following the rules as set forth by the NCAA, rather than expounding hatred for schools simply because you don't like their name, mascot, or that they had the audacity to be good this year when they are generally conference celler dwellers.

Duke deserved to lose!!!*

*And I'm a Duke fan.

smg58

Belmont does everything right all game, has a lead with half a minute to go, then makes no attempt to take a decent shot, then forgets to play defense, then forgets to take a timeout to regain composure, then forces up a shot, then gets a break on the alternate possession only to throw the most ill-advised inbounds pass I've ever seen. It might not bother me so much if I didn't hate Duke as much as I hate the Yankees.

West Virginia dominates the glass and sends an ice cold Duke team home.

Wisconsin's solid team play is too much for Micheal Beasley, the most dominant player in college, to overcome. Kansas State returns to Manhattan and Beasley can start prepariong to hear his name called as the first pick in the NBA draft.

Tough weekend for the #2 seeds. Little Davidson rallies behind their superstar Stephen Curry to knock off Georgetown.

Meanwhile, #2 Tennessee is pushed to overtime by Butler and #2 Texas narrowly hangs on against Miami to escape with a 3 point win.
