Should I have Flickr, what will it do for me, and how does it work exactly?

I use Photobucket not Flickr but they are great to get your pictures organized and make it easy to upload and resize for posting pictures in message boards and such.

I think Flickr is a bit different than photobucket though.

I'm more of a Picasa fan - I think it's a better presentation tool.

What Flickr or Picasa gives you is online backup of your photos. That's good, because the odds of the Internet AND your computer crashing at the same time are remote (and if they do, you'll have bigger things to worry about than your pictures). Plus Flickr or Picasa makes it easier for you to send pictures to family and friends, and to view your pictures from any computer (whether you're home or away).

I have Picasa, but it won't access my backup hard drive, and that's where I keep most of my pictures.

I had forgotten I had Picasa until MetFairy mentioned it, last night I was playing with it and it's truly amazing , like a lot the different things you can do with it, especially how it does a collage of your pictures.

I use it for all of my photo editing and organization. For a free tool it has a nice little feature set.

Any way you can get it to find pix on your external hard drives?

Mole, if you get it, will you come back to this thread and talk about "My Friend Flickr?"

Later

PS- sorry, I just had to do it. :)

When I want to call my chick, all I do is Flickr my Bic.

So what is the right answer here?

I seem to have similar needs as Mole -- my photos have overtaken the hard drive and a web-based storage/management app seems the way to go (in addition to CDs which we make and copy and an external drive).

Flickr? Picasa? Shuttlebug or whatever?

I use Kodak.com which was Ofoto when I first started using it.

It holds an unlimited amount of photos. Once a year you have to purchase something from their website in order to continue using the service. I order my holiday cards from them so that satisies it but I also order a CD of everything I've uploaded the previous year.

In addition to having the stuff online that I and others can view at any time I also have a CD library of all my pics.

Flickr and Picasa are both good. I'd subscribe to both (Flickr through Yahoo and Picasa through Google) to see which one you prefer vis-a-vis the display, etc.

There are two elements to Picasa - the web version and the downloadable version. The download has some nice, easy to use photo editing tools. Flickr makes it easier for you to resize pictures, though.

One tiebreaker is whether you use Yahoo or Google more - Flickr has more compatability with Yahoo, and Picasa through Google.

Another tiebreaker is whether you're into photo sharing - I think that Flickr has more of a community in that regard.

Personally, I prefer Picasa's display, plus I like Google's functionality in general. But you're good with either one.

The key is to back up your important photos online, so that you don't lose them entirely if your PC crashes.
