Does the game start at 4:10 or at 4:35? (I've heard both, but mostly it seems to be 4:10.)

Who is our opening day leftfielder? I'm guessing the Inherent Contradiction will get the call and bat seventh, with Church sliding up to sixth.

Today's Lineup as per The Post:
Centerfield Mar 31 2008 09:19 AM |
It doesn't say much for Church and Schneider that the guy we picked up for nothing slots in ahead of them in the lineup.
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2008 09:20 AM |
It's a lefty-righty thing, I'm sure.

Latest weather forecast for Miami:
Valadius Mar 31 2008 12:59 PM |
Is that blowing into or out of the park?
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2008 01:01 PM |
Good question! Which way does home plate face in Miami? I have no idea!
DocTee Mar 31 2008 01:11 PM |
Don't stadia-- by rule-- have to make home plate face East, to avoid having a setting sun in the batter's eyes?
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2008 01:14 PM |
The sun does usually set behind home plate, but I'm not sure that's true everywhere. I seem to recall hearing of some exceptions to that, but that may have been in ballparks that are now defunct.
Valadius Mar 31 2008 01:15 PM |
According to Clem's Baseball, it looks like home plate faces East-Northeast.

i found a muted TV in the cafeteria to go with my WFAN feed. i'll be here unless one is drastically ahead of the other.

In the pregame show, Ron Darling referred to Johan Santana as "The $137 Million Eraser."

Thanks Ben - I have different fond memories about that one :)

The game still hasn't started yet.

Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:27 PM |
the ceremony was for the retirement of "Mr. Marlin" Jeff Conine. Hendrickson warming on the mound as we speak. players on the field.
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2008 02:29 PM |
Oh brother. They delayed the game for that? A Jeff Conine ceremony could have run from 4:00 to 4:05.
John Cougar Lunchbucket Mar 31 2008 02:29 PM |
Oh we're dead vs. lefties.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:29 PM |
Reyes strikes out on 3 pitches on TV before he even comes to bat on the radio. fuck.
AG/DC Mar 31 2008 02:33 PM |
Or he can go down flailing on three pitches. That's cool, too.
Rotblatt Mar 31 2008 02:36 PM |
Man, it's days like this I hate work! Hopefully I'll make it home by the fourth, though. . .
Rotblatt Mar 31 2008 02:38 PM |
With two outs, how does a double not score Castillo from first?
themetfairy Mar 31 2008 02:38 PM |
It was a misplayed pop fly more than an actual double.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:39 PM |
The Mets strand runners at 2nd 3rd and here comes my first gripe of the season... Castillo was watching the play and holding up with two outs, he should have been running hard the whole way and relying on the 3B coach to tell him whether or not to go home (which he could have done had he been running not watching before the ball popped out of the CF's glove.)
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:41 PM |
Ramirez flails at an unhittable 1-1 pitch in the dirt, fouls off a 1-2 pitch, and watches strike 3 go by.
AG/DC Mar 31 2008 02:43 PM |
I don't remember this Santana guy from last year.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:43 PM |
1-2-3 and Santana is through the 1st.
Rotblatt Mar 31 2008 02:43 PM |
He was kind of an under-the-radar signing . . .
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:44 PM |
He was in that other league, you know, the one where pussies like Clemens can hit people and not have to take their turn at the plate.
Valadius Mar 31 2008 02:47 PM |
Santana = AWESOME.
AG/DC Mar 31 2008 02:49 PM |
Mets batting .200/.333/.200/.533 thus far.
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2008 02:51 PM |

This is a heckuvan inning:
OlerudOwned Mar 31 2008 02:53 PM |
I want to make sweet love to Johan's changeup. Is that weird?
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 02:56 PM |
santana fields it on the line and tags out Ross to end the marlin 2nd. 6 up, 6 down.
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2008 02:56 PM |
A little. (Hopefully it wouldn't involve mock lice inspections.)
Valadius Mar 31 2008 02:59 PM |
Santana's first at-bat!
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 03:01 PM |
Castillo puts himself on wth a beautiful bunt doen the line.
AG/DC Mar 31 2008 03:02 PM |
Bunting with two outs, he'd better steal second.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 03:03 PM |

MTE, though he did it right. Went right away and made it.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 03:10 PM |
9 up, 9 down.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 03:12 PM |

i'd normally be opposed to 2-out bunting because you really need to look to get yourself in scoring position with 2 outs, but Castillo is one of the least powerful hitters in the majors (at least with a starting job), so for him i'm ok with it.
Nymr83 Mar 31 2008 03:14 PM |
Beltran with a leadoff ouble. get. him. home.

Val, take it down a notch, I'll take a win over a no-no any day. BTW 7,321 games and counting... (number from that NoNoHitters.com site)
SteveJRogers Mar 31 2008 03:53 PM |
Well thanks to UltimateMets.com I can quickly say that Santana is now the 223 different Met starting pitcher during the 7,321 game no no-hitter streak!

Good Lord, I wonder why Heilman isn't in there, or Sanchez? Isn't this THEIR jobs at this point? Why mess around with the dreck of the pen this early in the year?

Way to set a role for Schoeneweiss early, Willie.

Slider City!
Triple Dee Mar 31 2008 05:06 PM |
I get the feeling Willie's gonna have a much shorter leash for his pitchers this season.
AG/DC Mar 31 2008 05:09 PM |
Marlon 1, Marlins 0.
Rockin' Doc Mar 31 2008 05:11 PM |
Sosa shows he's a little thirsty tonight. Wise apparently prefers water.
Rockin' Doc Mar 31 2008 05:14 PM |
Unfortunately, no Mets viewing in my area today. I'm getting the Giants at Dodger Stadium for my baseball fix. The Dodgers closed it out for a 5-0 win.
Valadius Mar 31 2008 05:17 PM |
I got the same game.

50th Anniversary of MLB in California. Fun thinking about both franchise's trajectories since leaving New York, though their trajectories were criss-crossing a little more than a decade earlier, probably once Branch Rickey and Leo Durocher were brought in during the early 40s is when the Dodgers turned that corner. Hard to tell when the Giants went from the premier franchise to an also ran though.
John Cougar Lunchbucket Mar 31 2008 05:22 PM |
we win. Yay.

Reporting late, but I did watch the majority of the game today when my son was not distracting me by spitting up on his Mets bib. I've started the season on the DL with sciatica which makes it painful to sit and type so I sat out the IGT. Which is probably a good thing judging by the usual crap I post in IGT's in lame attempts to be clever and funny.

Has Wright already hit that ball or is he about to?
Benjamin Grimm Apr 01 2008 07:18 AM |
Judging by the position of David's bat, I'd say the ball is still in its approach.
soupcan Apr 01 2008 07:23 AM |
He could've just hit it though, no?
themetfairy Apr 01 2008 07:24 AM |
Nah - if he had just hit it, the bat would be facing upwards.
soupcan Apr 01 2008 07:25 AM |
I dunno - where the bat is now could be the point of impact.
