Opening Day OOTS

Frayed Knot
Mar 31 2008 07:16 AM

Nice to see 30 of the 32 teams in action today (only the early starting BoSox & A's are off) and that Gay Dames are the rule for most of them.
Nothing worse than having the entire country celebrating OD while your team is forced to wait an extra day.

The Braves/Nats tilt last night was strictly a 1-game deal to open the new crib.
Braves return home to host the Pirates (7:00) while our current 2nd favorite team Nats go to Philly (3:00)
- D'Backs @ Reds (2:00)
- Brewers @ Cubs (2:20)
- Giants @ Dodgers (4:00)
- Rox @ Cards (4:00)
- Astros @ Padres (10:00)

- Bjays @ Yanx (1:00)
- Royals @ Tigers (1:00)
- ChiSox @ Injuns (3:00)
- Rays @ Orioles (3:00)
- Rangers @ Mariners (6:40)
- Angels @ Twinkies (7:00)

MFY start delayed by rain.

Ned Yost is apparently pulling a LaRussa -- the Brewers lineup I see posted has Ben Sheets batting 8th and Jason Kendall batting 9th.

Kansas City is hitless in the fourth in Detroit.

When was the last Opening Day no-hitter? I seem to remember one, but I'm not sure.

You sure cursed that one real fast. Billy Butler singles to left for KC's first hit of 2008.

Bob Feller - Indians. Don't know what year though.

Its a great trivia question:

There was a game played where one team's batting statistics remained the same as they were before the game. How could that be?

Opening Day no-hitter.

As a non-fantasy-playing baseball fan with brain damage, I was surprised to learn today that Edgar Renteria plays for Detroit.

Tigers have a scary O. Meche is throwing pretty well but in plenty of trouble anyway.

Cabrera reports for duty with his first AL home run, 3-0 Tigers. Crushed it.

Delayed starts in Cincinnati and at Wrigley and a rainout in the Bronx.

Games scheduled to get underway ten minutes from now in Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Baltimore. Let's see how the weather behaves. (Is it strange that the Reds and Indians are both playing home games? Or do they not typically synch their schedules like the Mets and Yankees [and Cubs and White Sox] do?)

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 31 2008 01:02 PM

Cubs-Brewers just getting underway in heavy fog/mist on espn2.

Benjamin Grimm

The game at Wrigley is also underway, as well as the three 3:05 starts I mentioned above.

Cleveland and Cinci are a bit further apart than the Bronx and Queens.

I was under the general impression that the NYPD (and the Chicago PD, I assume) was strongly in favor of having only one of the two teams playing at home at the same time.

I think the teams just like it that way, too. Usually Oakland/SF and LA/LA are not home at the same time either.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 31 2008 01:39 PM

Brent Musburger and Orel Hershiser calling the Cubs game. Ugh.

Fukodome smashes the first MLB pitch he sees into deep CF for a double-- not Kazzy enough.

Benjamin Grimm
Mar 31 2008 01:45 PM

Looks like the tarp is on the field at Wrigley.

Back when I was an Opening Day goer, there was nothing better than seeing clear skies on the morning of the game.

Rain is a real downer on the first day of the season.

Top 5th, Phils lead Nationals 2-0, but Zimmerman is batting with one out and the bases full.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 31 2008 02:22 PM

Going to the 11th in Detroit, 4-4. A wispy guy I never heard of named Lopez has shut down the Tigers for 2 innings.

Both ex-Mets on the Nats, Lastings and LoDuca, have been hbp by Myers today. Coincidence?

In Philadelphia:

] - W. Harris lined out to second
- M. Chico singled to center
- C. Guzman singled to center, M. Chico to second
- L. Milledge hit by pitch, M. Chico to third, C. Guzman to second
- R. Zimmerman hit sacrifice fly to deep right, M. Chico scored, C. Guzman to third
- N. Johnson walked, L. Milledge to second
- A. Kearns doubled to deep right center, C. Guzman and L. Milledge scored, N. Johnson to third
- P. Lo Duca safe at first on shortstop J. Rollins' fielding error, N. Johnson scored, A. Kearns to third
- R. Belliard popped out to second
- End of Inning (4 Runs, 3 Hits, 1 Error)

And Milledge adds a 2-run bomb in the 6th. 6-2 Nats.

AG/DC
Mar 31 2008 02:50 PM

I won't mind Milledge and Duke busting their asses for 18 games against the Mets as long as they bust 'em for 54 games against the Braves, Marlins, and Phillies.

Rotblatt
Mar 31 2008 02:51 PM

Milledge with a 2-run homer in the 6th. GameDay is silent on whether Milledge high-fived anyone in the stands. 6-2 Washington.

In other NL East action, the Braves host the Pirates this evening.

Glavine looks like Glavine. 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.

Maybe it's my bias, but all of a sudden it looks like he's getting that corner again that he (we) always bitched that he never got in New York.

I have a feeling the Braves' less than stellar defense up the middle is going to expose Glavine a little more than he's used to.

They don't look very impressive to me. Why are the Braves the designer pick to win it all this year? They look like the same team they were last year, only their defense is worse. Where did they improve?

Glavine's influence on the young hurlers, a full year of Teixiera, probably some of the trend is based on a feeling Mets and Phillies will kill each other for the division, leaving the "experience" in Atlanta to rise to the top.

I don't get it either, the Daily News last week polled their various sports writers and a few picked the Braves, Bill Madden had a gushing article about them, he's probably friends with Cox though, Eric Young on ESPN just sounded stupid trying to explain them as his pick...Steve Phillips has the Mets over the Tigers.

Atlanta has young hurlers? The only way they could get older is if they brought back Maddux. It seems to me they have as many questions about the age and health of their rotation as we do...if not more. Their bullpen doesn't frighten me and they don't have a closer.

I have to think a full year of Teixiera is nearly used up when he compensates for Andruw's lost power and Renteria's lost average. Escobar looks like he could be really good, but I don't think they can rely on him just yet. Can McCann return to his 2006 form? Can Chipper stay healthy? Kelly Johnson and Mark Kotsay?!?

This is bullshit. ESPN can kiss my ass. Prove it to me, Bravos!

And on edit: Their defense sucks, too. Glavine will not get win # 304 as the Braves piss away another lead. Tied at 4 in the 7th.

="Valadius"]ESPN basically saying that Andruw Jones got fat in the offseason.

GOT fat?
Hell, they could have said that on opening Day 2003 !!

- Fukudone did have a bit of that 'my bat's too hot to handle' on his HR ... Great debut, except they're still the Cubs!

- That Gagne signing not looking too good early on huh? Him & Wood basically played trading suck.

- Sabathia's not getting the huge deal he thinks (OK, he probably will anyway) if he keeps blowing 7-run leads he's been handed. Injuns won anyway, but that's a bad job. You just can't be doing that Mikey

- You wouldn't expect Verlander to cough up his lead either against the Royals.
Eh, shit happens.

- I like to think the Yankee final OD rainout is karmic payback for thinking that Reggie is the appropriate one to throw out the ceremonial 1st pitch.

Not over yet in ATL. Chipper just knocked in 2 and Texiera up as the potential winning run.

Frayed Knot

For all the Bay love that's gone on over the last few years - especially seeing as he was once Met property - he is a BAD outfielder (and is coming off a fairly lousy season at the plate too).

Bay's brief All-Star career might start to look a bit like that of Gibbons over in Baltimore who was once on everyone's 'must have' list but was just released even though they still owed him some $12mil.
