MLB Extra Innings

I just checked the online schedule for MLB Extra Innings, and discovered a new wrinkle for this season. And it's a nice one.

In the past, each game was carried on one and only one channel. Now, for many (but not all) games, we get a choice of the home team feed or the visiting team feed.

For this afternoon's game, I could watch Gary, Ron, and Keith on Channel 734, or the Marlins' group of louts on Channel 735.

This means I'll have fewer chances to sample broadcasts from other cities, but in the vast majority of cases, that's a good thing. I recall from last year, the guys from Miami and from San Diego were among the worst. I think I kinda liked the Cincinnati guys, and I did hear Vin Scully doing the solo thing from Dodger Stadium, which was a real treat.

I tried accessing the non-DirecTV version of the MLB EI schedule (at http://getbaseball.com) but they don't have the 2008 schedule online yet. So I don't yet know if this extra level of choice is just for DirecTV customers, or if everyone will get it.

That's a good perk. We utilize EI at my father-in-law's house in Mass. on weekends during the summer. It'll be nice to get the hometown feed if its available via cable.

I wish they'd add the postgame wrap-ups too though.

I agree. They usually kill the feed as soon as they go to commercial for the first time.

I was glad that they stuck with it for the 2006 NL East clinching celebration. And they also carried the 1986 20th Anniversary tribute as well.

The San Diego team was crap. The Arizona guys seemed like drunk jock frat boys to the last man, then they'd all grow up if Joe Garagiola came by.

I don't remember the Fishguys too well.

I remember being particularly irked by Tommy Hutton in the Marlins booth. (He's the "get outta here, ball" guy, isn't he?)

He also crowed with delight after that 7-run first inning on September 30.

The less I hear of him the better.

I hate the White Sox team - they're homers to a ridiculous degree. Seattle's crew is almost as bad.

We like watching the Red Sox on NESN, just for Remy's accent.

I liked listening to the Hawk in Chicago It was Darrin Jackson and theo ther clowns that killed that broadcast. NESN does a great job.

The Giants crew-- Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow, with Greg Papa in reserve--is the best in the bigs, right now.

AG/DC
Mar 31 2008 12:34 PM

Duane Kuiper tried to replace Joe Morgan in the field, to disastrous effects for the Giants. Maybe he can make up for it by replacing Joe Morgan in the booth.

Ray Fosse calls the A's games. He does a good job, and it's nice seeing that he's had a decent post-collision career.

DocTee
Mar 31 2008 01:56 PM

Fosse's awesome. He was paired with Papa --and on occasion the legendary Bill King--before SF lured him across the Bay. Now he has some schlub working beside him.

For a while the Papa-Fosse and Krukow-Kuiper tandems were the best in the biz, in my opinion.

I didn't know I had Extra Innings until tonight, I guess they are doing a promotion, listened to an inning of the Marlins commentry, watching the Texas at Seattle game, the home crew seems pretty good.

Hey, I have it too.

Yep, that's how I got the Mets feed today. Dunno know how long it lasts.

KC
Mar 31 2008 06:46 PM

They do the first week for free.

themetfairy
Mar 31 2008 07:01 PM

It's free the first week, and also the first week after the All Star break.

BTW, there's no discount if you purchase it later in the season. So if you like it, this is the time to cough up the $159 (the price also goes up in a week or two).

No, I don't get a commission from Extra Innings. But I've subscribed to it since 2002 or 2003, and I've enjoyed seeing the out of market games throughout the season.

Benjamin Grimm

And for an out-of-market Mets fan like myself, it's the best thing since cheese.

I like this extra innings package, it's not like watching ESPN , still I won't be getting it.

I wonder if/how many of the MLB EI package games are in HD.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 01 2008 02:35 PM

About half the games will be HD this year, as I understand it.

Tonight on DirecTV, the SNY feed for the Mets-Marlins game will be on Channel 722, by the way.

Vin Scully is on tonight, second inning in LA.

KC

One of my favorite things on extra innings is Scully.

I could not find any of the EI games in HD on my service (Time Warner). I'll have to call and find out if any of the games are carried in HD.

On Comcast, Extra Innings isn't available in HD.

I'm watching the Giants at the Dodgers in the final game of their three game series and the commentator said that the Giants are looking for their first extra base hit of the season, 16 singles all series....

That's why I think the Nats have the better team.

Triple Dee
Apr 03 2008 01:06 AM

I have a subscription to MLB.TV Mosaic and every game is available in HD.

No Mets game but Extra Innings has a few good ones on right now, Boston @ Toronto - Seattle @ Baltimore with Gary Thorne doing commentery and Traschel pitching, Pirates @ Marlins , KC @ Twins...

I think the price goes up after tonight or tomorrow too if any wants to get
in on a "discounted" price.

I love it, it's the best $1/day I could spend on anything.

soupcan
Apr 04 2008 08:21 PM

Well it seems to have totally fucked up my TV.

I tuned to 421, there was no picture but a message saying 'initializing..." I waited and waited, nothing happened, lost patience, tried to change the channel, nothing happened then my cable box went blank, said 'boot', went totally black and won't turn back on.

Thanks a lot you buncha jerks!

Okay never mind, its back.

Lord no.

That would've scared the shit out of me.

What is that - something from 'The Andromeda Strain'?

metirish
Apr 04 2008 08:33 PM

That's RTE - Irish State TV and that is what would come on when you would first turn on the telly and after it went of the air for the night.

Another nice thing about EI is that you get to see commercials from around the country, which can be entertaining.

Back in 1998 I did this a few nights listening to MLB.com's radio package of Cubbie games during the stretch run and kept hearing George Strait singing a song he "wrote" for I think Chevy trucks.

Can't say they ever hit the NYC market where I wonder how many people would know who Mr. Strait is! I mean here you might get more people who know George Jones than George Strait!

Fman99

So apparently, Time Warner does dedicate an HD channel to MLB Extra Innings. So they have 2-3 games per day that are in HD, which is a sweet bonus for me.

Tonight it was the Astros/Cards earlier (and the Cubs day game), and now the Indians/Angels tilt.

I went in for the whole season. Someone else put it well - I'd rather watch an out of market MLB game than any of the dreck on TV these days.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 08 2008 05:08 AM

I actually prefer the dreck.

Mrs. Fman99 would agree with you. I can't handle it. Especially the reality TV crush of summertime. I have the urge to destroy her TV with "great vengeance and furious anger" each and every day.

But now it's OK because I'll be watching MLB EI in HD in the FR (family room).

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 08 2008 06:08 AM

There's enough good stuff on TV that, with TiVo, I can get one solid hour per night. (None of it reality stuff.)

Right now I'm loving Torchwood. We're also watching Mad Men, still have a few episodes of The Wire left. And soon 30 Rock will be back.

AG/DC
Apr 08 2008 09:38 PM

A woman I used to know is on Mad Men. She plays, um, one of the women on Mad Men.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 09 2008 05:40 AM

Oh! Her!

She's VERY good!

AG/DC
Apr 09 2008 06:04 AM

Stephanie Courtney. I don't know how regular her role is.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 09 2008 07:00 AM

She plays "Marge." I've seen eight or nine of the episodes, and I'm not sure who "Marge" is, so it's not a prominent role. (She didn't look familiar on her IMDB page, but maybe I'd recognize her in character, with the 1960's hairdo and makeup.)

She wasn't prominent enough to make this page, and sadly, her Wikipedia entry is being considered for deletion. Hopefully her career will continue to progress.

How do you know her?

AG/DC
Apr 09 2008 07:32 AM

She's the dark haired one here with the substitute-teacher glasses, in the middle of the still frame.

Back in the day in New York, I was a legal proofreader. We worked all sorts of crazy shifts, so my colleages were often out-of-work musicians, actors, and artists. I met a lot of very talented people, some real frauds, and a handful of outright asses.

I watched a handful of clips, and oh my goodness gracious, that show is depressing.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 09 2008 07:37 AM

Yeah, it's not exactly "Touched by an Angel."

So "Marge" is one of the girls in the office. I guess I'm not surprised that I didn't pick up on her name.

I'll be rooting for her character to maybe have an affair with one of the office boors. Being on that show can be good for her career. The more lines she gets, the better for her.

I got to the gym this morning and recognized Stephanie under a ton of makeup in a Progressive Insurance ad. She once was in a commercial playing the woman behind two guys in line at the supermarket who only have enough money for beer or toilet paper but can't choose which one. All she did was impatiently roll her eyes, but it was a Super Bowl ad and I think she lived for a year off of her cut.
