Poem a Day

I don't exactly know what possessed me, but I've taken the challenge of Robert Lee Brewer at Writers Digest to celebrate National Poetry Month by writing a poem every day for thirty days, on a prompt of his choosing. To make it a little harder on myself, I'm going to try to write them all in my 5/4 syllabic form, and develop a narrative of sorts/

If anyone wants to follow this foolishness, I'm posting them on my blog as I go.

Are you cheating and writing more than 1 a day but only posting them one at a time? Oh, never mind, I see you have to wait for the get-go from the poet guy.

I think that's gotta be a great exercise. We all could use a good avocational challenge now and again.

My poem of the day.

I'll not go out on New Year's Eve
When revelry descends to madness
When merriment and mischief blur
And demons dance in chldren's arms

I'll not go out on New Year's Eve
For no night redeems a year
No bacchanal can light my dark
Erase the truth that haunts my step

I'll not go out on New Year's Eve
Though, to be fair, last year was really boring

My poem of the day:

I'm going to be stubborn
Standing in your fire
Dousing it as best I can
As you demand my bucket

I'm going to be stubborn
Singing songs of love
Into a dark canyon
As echoes return dogshit

I'm going to be stubborn
Building temples of praise
Only to house blasphemies
Just to shelter malice

I'm going to be stubborn

You're too kind, but we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Can echoes return dogshit? I'm mixing metaphor there, aren't I? What's the sonic equivelant of dogshit?
