Maine is getting squeezed big time.

Prado completely screw up an easy turn on the double-play ball, the mets tie it at 1.

I agree. I'll add Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and player interviews during the game to that list.

And yes, the FOX radar gun does appear to be juiced.

The rain and Maine ruining my weekend thus far.

The Mets O needs to chip away at Hudson to get to that bullpen.

They kept clocking Zumaya at something like a consistant 103 during the 2006 playoffs.

I know its only the 5th inning but pulling Maine for the punch-hitter here is the right move. 2nd and 3rd 1 out for Brady Clark!

Biggest blown call I've ever seen.

Nymr83
Apr 05 2008 03:38 PM

oh my god they are reversing the call???

i guess they'll move everyone up one base, even though pagan would clearly have s cored as well, still its better than the blown call!

bmfc1
Apr 05 2008 03:38 PM

How can I get mad when umps at my kids games screw up when these clowns, making six figures a year, screw up night after night (Beltran the other night and now this)?

TransMonk
Apr 05 2008 03:38 PM

Overturned...good for blue. We still potentially lose a run that would have scored.

Frayed Knot
Apr 05 2008 03:40 PM

I'm not sure what kind of leeway the umps have to reverse judgement calls like that.
You run into a whole slew of factors that can't simply be righted by pretending the correct call was made in the first place.

It's one of the main reasons why replay rules never work as smoothly in practice as they do in theory.

Zvon
Apr 05 2008 03:42 PM

Frayed Knot wrote:

really.
They made a mess out of that.
What a rip.

Frayed Knot
Apr 05 2008 03:44 PM

I'll take it, but I can also understand why the Braves would be pissed off too.
One runner follows the umps call while the other ignores it and passes a runner in front of him and both wind up getting awarded their next base.

Nymr83
Apr 05 2008 03:44 PM

Castillo bring one home on a groundout... lets go Wright!

Nymr83
Apr 05 2008 03:46 PM

damn. Wright grounds out to end it, I know the Mets got another run after the whole incident, but they really let the Braves off the hook there, gotta take advantage of these situations and tie the game up.

TransMonk
Apr 05 2008 03:46 PM

Well, that wacky inning makes it a game again.

Time for the bullpen to shine.

Frayed Knot
Apr 05 2008 03:46 PM

Would have been nice if we could have made a bigger mess out of that inning after the reversal.
One more hit breaks that puppy wide open.

1-2-3 go the Braves, i've missed Joe Smith pitching.

How do McCarver and Buck pose the question that Pagan should be out because he passed Church, when the only reason he passed Church is because the umpires blew the call?

Seems pretty stupid to me.

Well, Church reacted to what the umps called and Pagan should have too.
Pagan was merely following Alomar who didn't seem to notice the call either.

Alomar saw the play, lol.
Hey, if we at home watchin on TV could plainly see (live) that it was trapped how could the ump not?
Ok, ill shut-up. (just venting)

Water under the bridge at this point.

The ball could bounce 4 times before Kotsay gets to it but if the ump calls it a catch then it's a catch (at least until further notice) and all runners need to react accordingly.
And it's not Pagan at fault so much as it's Alomar who was windmilling his arm to send Pagan home like an out call was never even a possibility -- but when a play is even semi-close it's something the coach oughta be sure of before he starts sending runners.

And now I'll shut up -- except to repeat that situations like that are why reversing calls (either thru conference or replay) are rarely clean and easy.

After 7 and a half, 5-9, them.

Well, we had sole possession of first place for a couple hours today.

What a queer game. The Mets had many opportunities to change the complexion of this game...maybe not win, but be closer than they were. I'm not going to dwell on this loss for too long, but this type of play better not become a habit.

Back at 'em tomorrow.

General observation: I'm really starting to worry about Delgado -- every pitch in the mid-80's and above, he's missing by a mile.

Triple Dee
Apr 05 2008 06:34 PM

Another point - why does Willie bring-in Sosa in a close game, instead of going with Heilman or Feliciano. Do these players have a contractual clause that allows them to pitch only when the Mets have the lead?

Yes, you guessed it, I'm feeling rather pissed at the moment.

you can't call for Heilman every time the game is +/- 3 runs, he'll pitch 70-80 games this year, if he'd pitched today and every game like today he'd have to throw 120 games. later in the season you may choose to use him on a day like today if he hasn't worked much lately, but it was the right move not to use him today.

Triple Dee
Apr 05 2008 07:41 PM

Okay, but it doesn't explain why he left Sosa in for as long as he did.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 05 2008 08:38 PM

I was watching halfway across a crowded restaurant and even I knew that was a clean single. Didn't see how they worked it out till now. But what crap 'piring we've seen this season already. That obviously affected the game in ways we'll never know but I have to think the interruption itself was a great advantage for the Braves.

Anyway, I also noted the complete dumbth Reyes showed twice trying to bunt there and think he oughta be traded to the Orioles as punishment. What a complete idiot. As if setting it up for Castillo is ever a good idea. Hello McFly.

I missed most of Maine's outing, he apparently sucked bhmc, huh? That Soso struggled doesn't come as nearly as big a surprise. Obviously we need better than that from Maine, we've lost twice, both times our starter didn't give us enough and we had to play from behind.

AG/DC
Apr 05 2008 09:14 PM

When the starter is chased after four, I've got nothing to say about bullpen choices. Everybdoy grab a bucket and start bailing.

I liked the .667 Mets better than the .500 Mets.

After his first bunt failed, the 3rd base coach walked towards the batter's box and said something. I wonder what he said. I'm guessing it wasn't "Yeah, bunting here is a good idea".
