Let's Go Mets. Be nice to see some offense today.

I like the all-white, blue-cap look. I think it's their best combo.

Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder are no problem but Gabe Kapler is going to crush us.

Bases loaded for Kapler, and this scares me so much more that it should.

Perez gets the K. Lots of pitches for the Mets starter early again today.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 13 2008 11:54 AM

Pretty nice inning. Gary Cohen sure oversells the "productuive out" angle but I agree with him when he said Suppan's whiff of Valentin in Game 6 was the real killer in that game.

OlerudOwned
Apr 13 2008 12:03 PM

Luis Castillo showing his extra-base power.

Zvon
Apr 13 2008 12:05 PM

To me Castillo's running looked tender to say the least.

Or maybe it just looked like one of his legs is shorter than the other.....

Beltran with the RBI single, and now my attention will be divided between this game and the non-stop fun time thrill ride that is Alexander Ovechkin in the playoffs.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Yeah, God forbid baseball clubs actually encourage fan participation in a baseball game in order to make the experience of attending the ballpark more enjoyable.

Do you sit on your hands during a rally when you're at a game?

Things that drove me absolutely fucking nuts today:

1. The moron Yankee fans in my section cheering for the Brewers. Go play on the train tracks.

2. The ass clown who, after every strikeout by Mets pitching, let out this stupid wordless yell for about 2 minutes. No, really. The kicker: people were cheering and applauding him.

3. Bottom of the 6th, 2 on, 2 out. Pagan and Castillo each just walked on 5 pitches, and David Wright comes up...and swings at the first pitch. Attention David: maybe Torres was having some control issues there? Taking a pitch or two might be prudent.

4. Bottom of the 7th - Delgado hits into what is seemingly another double play, but somehow he makes it to first in time (I thought he was out). Later in the inning, when Schneider grounds into the inning ending DP, he's safe at first. Bad call, and all Wilie does is trot out after everybody's already back in the dugout and has a little chat with Ed Montague, as if they're discussing where to get a good slice after the game. I know it's not Willie's style, but just a little, tiny bit of frustration/anger could be shown by our manager. You say in the post game that you want the team's play to be more "crisp"? How about a little more "crispness" from you. That one deserved a much bigger argument. C'mon Willie, show a little fight.

5. Bottom of the 8th, first and third and Castillo grounds out to first.

Attention Brady Clark:
1. You are NOT the tying run (we are down by 2)
2. It is NOT a force play.
So why are you breaking on contact? Also, your slide into home was terrible.

6. Oliver Perez giving back a four run lead as soon as his offense gives it to him. Terrible, just terrible.

On the traditional 1-10 scale of frustration this one was a 15. Plus it was cold and windy and cloudy and generally miserable at Shea. </rant>

Brady Clark's head needs some straightening out.

For all the hype about the Mets the last few years the Mets have won nothing other than a divisional title.

How do Willie and the jacket keep their jobs?

The good news is Oliver Twist is a FA at the end of the year.

AG/DC
Apr 13 2008 04:34 PM

I don't kow what hype you're talking about.

Yeah, God forbid baseball clubs actually encourage fan participation in a baseball game in order to make the experience of attending the ballpark more enjoyable.

Do you sit on your hands during a rally when you're at a game?

It's one thing for some classic organ music to be played, or some sort of cheesy rally clip to be played on the screen (Hackman's Hoosier's "I don't care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game..." speech that ends with everyone clapping, Peter Finch's "Get out of your seats, open the window and yell..." leading to Lets Go Mets, etc) or goofy trivia segments in-between innings.

But it's another thing to hear some obnoxious voice come over the PA and say "EV-REY-BOD-Y-CLAP-YO-HANDS!" followed by some canned clapping noise designed to tell the fans "You must CLAP NOW! CHEER ON YOUR TEAM!"

Not to sound too much like certain curmudgeons but there is a stark difference between something being an organic cheer (and yes I'll give that much props to the annoying WOOOO that fans have added to "LETS-GO-METS" in recent years for being an organic thing) and something that is created by the Shea PA staff designed to direct the audience into doing something.

And of course yes it's not just at Shea, but it is just about EVERY sporting event possible, and I do realize that the genie isn't going to get put back in the bottle on this one.

I'm also extra grouchy today because of what I witnessed on that field today and the usual coldness inside the wind tunnel known as the Loge Reserves.

I'm back from the game. Cold and pissed off.

As for "Everybody Clap Your Hands," that causes me to cringe in pain, and my son to comment about the banality of it. At least the kid has his head on straight.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 13 2008 06:44 PM

The way I look at it the real failure today was Oliver's. Smith too. I mean, get 2 outs.

But we scored 7 and brought the tying run up or on base a million times. Granted I missed the Clark fiasco and you can't be pleased with Wright's groundout, and you already knew Castillo's considerable limitations, but we hit well enough to beat a good hitting team like Milwaukee most days and had some bad luck too.

metirish
Apr 13 2008 07:00 PM

Hitting into all those double plays was a killer , we had ample chances but the execution was piss poor. Perez again failed and it seems like the pen is working too many innings every game.

The ending of Clarke's adventure was terrible especially after he got the hit then stole second to stay out of the DP.

Been to 2 games this year.

Opening Day and today. I'm 0-2.

Other than that...

Apr 13 2008 08:52 PM

Until Alou comes back I would put Pagan 2nd behind Reyes and place Castillo in the 7th or 8th hole. He cant hit a ball into the outfield from his 2nd base position. It was ugly all around today and the Castillo 4 year signing is awful....

AG/DC
Apr 13 2008 09:14 PM

I don't agree with the signing either. But he did get two basehits to the outfield today, in addition to walking and scoring once. He was 2-4. The doubleplay he got into was when he hit the ball really hard.

Gwreck

I'll take it. My point is to plead that we don't get ourselves a whipping boy and disregard the facts before us. Castillo is welcome to bring what he did yesterday all season.
