El Duque pitched 5 innings for the StL-Mets yesterday gave up 3 hits, 2 ER including 1 HR while striking out 6.

Duaner Sanchez, who's likely to be rehabbing for a while, pitched 1 inning giving 2 HRs.

I was wondering when alou would be back. with Pagan batting the way he is, I don't feel like we need him back in a hurry.

Keep in mind that the offense we're going ga-ga over (and rightfully so) from Pagan over an 11 game stretch is virtually identical to what Alou kept up for more than two months last year (Aug & Sept).

When Alou is ready he's going to be activated and he's going to play. They'll need to find time for Pagan around that.

Alou may be sooner rather than later. He's looking to be playing rehab games in St. Lucie this week.

It's not like Alou won't get hurt again.

I'm pretty comfortable with Alou, Pagan, and Endy as injuries and circumstances dictate.

I was kinda surprised the Cubs let Pagan go being he had quite a few AB's last season and filled in well.

Might be a chance to sort of rotate the OF

AG/DC

They didn't let him go. We traded for him.

Frayed Knot
Apr 14 2008 10:08 AM

I'm not suggesting putting Pagan in mothballs.

The guy whose roster spot is in jeopardy when Alou returns is most logically Clark. But not only could he probably refuse any demotion but he'd have next to no trade value.
Endy, on the other hand, might fetch something if there's a team out there in need of some true ball-hawk of a CFer and I might look to move him if a match could be found. Pagan's emergence has made him more redendant than anyone.

I'm not saying that to trade Endy would be unthinkable, but I think I'd still rather have him than Brady Clark.

Well, certainly, but the assertion of trading him would mean that you'd get Brady Clark, plus some fine young athlete or two in return.

you only need two of pagan, chavez, and clark. if you can really get a useful part for one of them (which i doubt) do it.

Right after the injury, I predicted a June 12 return for Pedro. Now who knows?

Here is part of espn.com story:

Pedro Martinez reportedly won't be back anytime soon to wake up the lethargic-looking New York Mets.

General manager Omar Minaya told the New York Post for Tuesday's editions that the team doesn't expect the injured Martinez to return to the mound for the Mets until the middle of May or possibly June.

"We're definitely going to be more conservative with him," Minaya told the Post. "With hamstrings, you just never know. We've got to be careful."

Martinez suffered a left hamstring strain in his first start of the season. It was diagnosed as a mild hamstring strain and at the time, he was expected to miss four to six weeks.

Minaya told the Post that the Mets' doctors have ruled out Martinez's return before the six-week mark of his recovery.

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Alou will begin his rehab with St Lucie Mets on the weekend.

Mets GM Omar Minaya said that Pedro Martinez will be out until at least the middle of May, and possibly until June.

Pedro was originally expected to miss 4-6 weeks, which would have put him at an early May return, but Minaya says that time frame has been ruled out by team doctors. "We're definitely going to be more conservative with him... With hamstrings, you just never know. We've got to be careful," Minaya said.

The New York Mets would like to wish Orlando Hernandez all the best in his future endeavors.

Brian Schneider; Day-to-day;
4/28 - Brian Schneider is likely to be released from the hospital on Monday, according to GM Omar Minaya. Minaya is optimistic that Schneider will return to the lineup a day or two later. He's been out since Thursday with an infected thumb.{The way Casanova's starting to hit, I'm happy for Schneid to sit out a bit longer}

Ramon Castro ; Return May
4/28 -- Ramon Castro, making his first appearance for St. Lucie, caught Claudio Vargas' debut and spent seven innings behind the plate.
Castro went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Moises Alou Return late April
4/27 -- Moises Alou will undergo an MRI on Monday to try to determine the cause of swelling in his left ankle. While Minaya insisted Alou probably is close to returning to the Mets and characterized the MRI as precautionary, he said a preliminary scan showed something in the ankle, possibly a slight fracture. {Any day now.}

Pedro Martinez Return May -
4/23 -- According to New York Newsday, Pedro Martinez (hamstring) is expected to throw a bullpen session in 10-14 days. Martinez said last week that he hoped to be off the disabled list by then, but the Mets have always said much differently. "He's progressing well," assistant general manager John Ricco said. "He's ahead of where we thought he'd be." {We're all still waiting for the the "big surprise". }

Orlando Hernandez Return late May;
4/24- New York Newsday reports that Orlando Hernandez (foot) is "practically back to square one" and will have to remain in a walking boot for at least two more weeks. Another setback for El Duque, who now seems unlikely to return before late May at the earliest and could be out much longer.{"Our voices will ring together, until the 12th of never"}

Matt Wise:Return late April
4/15 -- Matt Wise (forearm) appears likely to remain on the disabled list until the end of April. The Mets were optimistic Wise would be activated when eligible on Thursday, but he still hasn't started throwing.{Gee it's been a while?}

Jason Vargas: Return July
3/30 - Mets placed LHP Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, following hip surgery. Vargas was expected to miss three months after surgery earlier this month. He'll spend most of the rest of the year in the minors once healthy.

Ambiorix BurgosLikely out for the season
3/30 - Mets placed RHP Ambiorix Burgos on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, following following Tommy John surgery. Burgos underwent surgery at the end of August, so he'll miss most or all of 2008.

Some news on the thumb front.

Mets C Brian Schneider was released from a hospital yesterday after six days of treatment for a staph infection (note: how do we keep going back and forth on this?) in his left thumb.

Schneider said he wasn't sure when he will return to the field and that he could still go on the disabled list. The pain will need to subside enough that the thumb can withstand the pounding inside his catcher's glove.

The problem started as a tiny blister during the Mets' series at Philadelphia two weekends ago. After it popped -- it was so small Schneider didn't even notice when that happened -- it became infected.

Schneider first felt discomfort last Tuesday. The thumb was swollen when he woke up Wednesday, but he played through the pain after consulting with the team trainer and a hand specialist. By Thursday, though, it had swelled up so much that he was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics intravenously.
That's part of a compilation of several wre service stories. A lot of strange injury news flying around.

Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano said his right calf feels fine and he'll be "100 percent" when he returns from the disabled list today.
I would hope so, since all the guy did was hop. will he be able to hop again?

Giants LHP Noah Lowry will be shut down for a "significant" amount of time as he struggles to heal from a nerve injury in his forearm.
No comment, other than that sounds strange and worth monitoring.

Cardinals LHP Mark Mulder gave up nine runs in his fourth rehabilitation start, an indication he's far from ready to return from September shoulder surgery.

Man, don't let Rick Peterson go. He curses these guys on the way out the door.

Braves LHP Mike Hampton left a rehab start at Class AAA Richmond in the fourth inning when he was bothered by his injured chest muscle.
The stars have crossed Mike Hampton. Someday, he is going to be injured by a pillow. Or a sock. Or a gentle breeze.
