Vargas: Done Deal

Minor league contract various outlets say. Rubin today said Vargas "was not in pitching shape" and would likely be sent to extended spring training and therefore wouldn;t be an immediate option.

Yes, can't wait to see him, what cataclysmic event would have to happen for him to get a start?

Yeah. He's nice to have, especially if you never have to call him up.

Well, with Figueroa we're already down to the seventh starter on the depth chart. I'd guess that Sosa is number eight. Who's number nine? Armas maybe? (I'd prefer it to be a young guy with a future, but I don't know that any of them are even close to ready. Could Niese maybe get a spot start?) We're not too many injuries or mishaps away from potentially needing Vargas, especially if Pedro and Orlando's recoveries take even longer than the current mid-May estimate.

Two seasons ago we used 10 different starters before the end of May. Last season the Yanx used 10 before April was done with. So it's not like needing to go to plan C, D & E are all that rare.

IMO, it's pretty scary that Figueroa is considered (by Mets hierarchy) a better option than Sosa or even Heilman...I hope that their logic there is that Sosa/Heilman are vital cogs to the bullpen, moreso than Figueroa has better starting pitcher attributes.... Supposedly, Vargas has good "stuff", although his numbers don't really suggest it...

So long as we keep using off days to minimize the starts of the #5 pitcher, I'm comfortable with the occasional Vargas-Figueroa-Armas start until Hernandez or Martinez comes back.

I think that assumption is as safe as houses.
