OoTSB, 4/9 (About the Tigers)

Atlanta snowed out in Colorado. The first-place Marlins hang on for a 4-3 win over the rallying Nats.

Boston scores eight in the last two innngs for a 12-6 win over the now 1-8 Tigers.

What's the deal with the Tiggers? Are they just not hitting? Not pitching? Defense? The whole shebang?

I'd be so bummed out as a Tiger fan with a start like that. Can you imagine if the Mets were 1-8? Hooo-boy.

Sheff, Polanco and Mig have had slow starts.

But, their starting pitching is overrated.

And their bullpen is a "dog's breakfast" (as they say in this part of the world).

Also;
- Curtis Granderson's been out
- Justin Verlander's been lousy.
- Dontrelle Willis had a one-hitter thru 5 innings the other day ... with 7 walks.
- Kenny Rogers is even older than he was last year -- as are the rest of us come to think of it ... but we're talking about a guy who refers to Glavine as 'Sonny'

I suspect that the Marlins-Tigers deal will end up well for Detroit, but only because of Cabrera. Willis has for the last few years seemed like a guy whose best years were already behind him.

I know Cabrera was recently extended. When does Dontrelle's current contract end? My prediction: the Tigers let him leave via free agency.

Nope, they gave Dontrelle a contract extension just as quickly as they did to Cabrera.
Not as long or as expensive, but he's theirs for the next 3 years or so.

At the time of that trade I really wanted D-Train for the Mets. Frayed Knot correctly pointed out why I would not.

But he's young and physically he's fine. No reason he shouldn't be able to return to 20 game-winning form though, is there?

Well, one reason is that the traditional 20-win standard of excellence has become really really hard to reach in recent years.

Here's the deal:
- signed extension 12/20/07 (avoided arbitration)
- 08:$7M, 09:$10M, 10:$12M
- $1.5M in award bonuses based on Cy Young vote

I don't know that I was so anti-Dontrelle prior to that Tiger trade as that I was against describing him as a "must get" or whatever trade terms were being thrown around at the time.
He's still an intriguing guy, but is definitely living off the rep he built up duing his one or two good years and big lefties with lots of moving parts in their motion have gotta be a bitch to fine tune or, worse yet, deconstruct and rebuild.

I had said that I thought he was a stud. You responded that he was less and less of a 'stud' and pointed out why.

You were right.
