The team I support led the league for 3/4 of the season, before collapsing with about 8 games remaining, and is effectively out of contention and currently third.

When things like this happen to you twice in the space of about 5 months, you start to wonder about the choices you've made in life.

Does anybody else here follow EPL? Metirish, you certainly must.

Yep , Man Utd fan, have been since 81. We have a soccer thread here somewhere, Seo and a few others follow the game. Recently I subscribed to Setanta Broadband because cablevision don't carry it, gotta say it's worth the $14 a month, they show a load of games and other sports I like, Rugby and GAA games.

Well fuck, Middlesbrough who only play good against the "big" teams did it again today forcing Man Utd to come back form 2 - 1 down to tie it at 2 at the Riverside, cracking last half hour as Utd chased the game with chances at both ends. Man Utd's lead at the top now three points over Chelsea with five games to go and Utd still have to play both Chelsea and the Arsenal.

I read an article somewhere (after the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, I think) that compared Arsenal's collapse to the Mets, and that's kind of a kick square in the adlers if you support both.

Buck up, 3D. There's still Champions League and if that chance for silverware gets lost Tuesday, well you could still do worse than Arsenal and the Mets. You could be a Pirates fan and love Bolton or something.

Irish - you have Man U., Liverpool, Arsenal, and Spurs under one roof? I bet me and my brothers didn't fight at all compared to you guys.

Who would've thought that after all the injuries and the drama with Jose, that Chelsea would have a legit shot at this point to win the thing? And if they did, the fans would still hate Avram Grant.

Chippy is a legend and no doubt will be a help when he becomes an assistant coach under Trappatoni in the Republic team.

My earliest true memory of rooting hard for Utd was at age nine when they played the 1983 FA Cup Final, that Utd team featured several Irish players among them Frank Stapleton, Kevin Moran and of course Norman Whiteside.

I was up very early this morning feeding my son, I tuned into Setanta and they were showing Aussie Rules Football - Adelaide vs. Port Adelaide , boy it was a savage tough game.

Yesterday I watch Munster play Gloucester in the Heineken Cup Quarter Final, Munster won , they would be the Rugby team at home from where I come form and my Brother goes to watch them a lot.

Yeah we can talk about the Six-Nations , Ireland's so called "Golden generation" weren't so Golden after all.

Triple Dee
Apr 06 2008 09:47 AM

Big Frank is not a particularly well-liked fellow amongst Gooners.

Yes, there's much hatred between the two Adelaide team. Aussie Rules doesn't really have a strong following in Sydney. It's more of a rugby league town, but I don't follow it. To me, the start of rugby league season means it's the start of baseball season.

I support Les Bleus in 6N (as I do in international football) owing to my heritage from my father's side. However, since Euro 2004 I've started to embrace my mother's heritage in football too.

This is my all-time favorite Chippy moment, just sublime;

Firstly, you may want to rethink your decision to support Sp*rs.

Secondly, every season, each team competes in 3-4 distinct and unrelated competitions. In England, there's the;

1. Premier League (EPL) - is league where the top 20 teams play home/away, no play-offs. The team that has the best record wins it.

2. FA Cup; is a knock-out cup competition, involving every single professional and amateur club in England (ie over 700 teams). You can think of this as playoffs without a regular season. If you win you progress, if you lose you're out

3. Carling (League) Cup - which is what Sp*rs won. It's almost identical to the FA Cup except amateur teams don't compete (which brings the number down to about 92 teams). The big clubs actually believe this competition is a farce, and therefore usually field prospects/ non-regular players.

PLUS

4. UEFA Champions League - The top 4 teams from the previous year's EPL, compete in this league against the top teams from other European leagues. The format of this competition is probably the closest to regular season/playoff seen in US sports.

OR

5. UEFA Cup - teams that finish 5th-7th in the previous year's EPL plus the FA Cup winners compete in this competition, against similar teams from other European countries. Similar format to the UCL.

Hope that helps.

THere is no individual seeding, however teams enter the competition progressively according to the Division they playing in, ie the teams in the top 2 divisions enter the competition in the 3rd round proper(which is really the 9th round) see

Manure has a lousy record in the EPL after they play mid-week in the Champions League , but Arsenal will be feeling deflated after being raped by the refereeeliminated in the same competition. Prediction : 2-0 to the Manx.

Chelsea with an extra day's rest, entertain Wigan at home, who are relatively safe from relegation and therefore have nothing to play for. Prediction: 3-0 Chelski.

Very few --

In summer, the choices are cricket or soccer. The standard of the soccer league is too poor to watch, and cricket is only remotely interesting for me, because it incorporates many skills found in baseball.

In winter, there's a choice of Aussie Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union -- I only really like RU but it's the least popular of the three.

Baseball is played fall-to-winter in Australia (so cricketers can hone their skills in the off-season) but there's no professional league here anymore. There was one in the late 80's, early 90's but I wasn't living here at the time.
Incidently, the Sydney team were called the Metros and played in orange, blue and teal, and from what i've been told, they were absolutely terrible.

Triple Dee
Apr 12 2008 08:18 PM

- RU has 15 players on the field v 13 in RL
- Differences in points award.
- Many rule differences.
- General differences in style of play; RU revolves more around scrimmaging whereas is RL is more open, say like lacrosse.

Metfairy -- The US actual has more rugby clubs than any other country in the world. The best RU competitions are the one's held at international level, whether between countries or clubs.

Arsenal were doomed by prolonged slumps, injuries, and lack of depth to sustain those injuries, all which snowballed before crashing horrifically at the bottom of the mountain this past weekend.

Hard to really blame AW him for standing pat. Fabregas shot out of the gates and looked for two months to be the best player in the world. Then he stopped scoring. Just stopped.

Adebayor turned into one of the most dangerous players in the league. I think if Togo would've qualified for ACN, Arsenal would've tanked a bit earlier, though, and maybe forced his hand. But even then, ACN was late January and he would've had to act fast. Really fast to bring someone in. Eduardo adapted well and became a legit scorer, but got in hurt in February. Hard to replace a guy then. They just got screwed by bad luck and bad timing. Bad fucking luck, man. Lehmann's flub against Blackburn was 2 points. Big Phil's OG against Aston was 2 more points. Clichy's penalty against Birmingham was 2 points. There's more, but my stomach hurts.

The combination of all the injuries to Eduardo, Rosicky, van Persie, Flamini and Sagna at the end, was just too much when your top guys stop scoring.

I was bummed Diarra didn't work out and think they'll miss him if Flamini doensn't return, and I bet he'll take some huge ransom from Juventus or wherever and bolt. He's got to look to replace van Persie and Rosicky both. I love those dudes, but you can't count on them to be on the pitch. Fabianski got torched in his only first team action, IIRC. Not sure he's a suitable #2. Of his striker options after Ade, he can't really count on any of them to be 100% healthy or capable. I think he's got more shopping to do than he lets on.

Oh yeah, I like Arsenal.

Bah.

I blame AW for not bringing in a winger when the club was crying out for one. He tried to bring in Ribéry but they were outbid by Bayern. His Plan B was to get Sagna who turned out to be a fantastic player but it meant pushing Ebouseless up to the wing.

And then Arsène persevered with Ebouseless, and persevered and preserved until it was impossible for anybody to justify his selection anymore. If you consider the type of season Ribéry just had for BM, I’m certain if they had signed him, we would have won the league and we’d still be in with a shot of the Champion’s League.

You can arguably blame Arsène for having a small squad that was vulnerable to injury, and not creating competition for places. Too many players became complacent this season, and only played when they felt like it. The worst culprits were Hleb, Ebouseless, Rosicknote (on the rare occasion he was actually fit) and to a lesser extent Cesc.

I meant standing pat in January. No doubt Ribery would've been a nice addition last summer. I do like Hleb and Rosicky a lot, but neither score enough (or ever) and Rosciky just can't stay healthy. Theo's time has come.

Eboue's antics and flopping are a complete embarrassment, but I kinda like his ability. Off to Barca or somewhere anyway is the rumor. OK, I say.

I've never actually seen Fabianski. Alumnia says he's better than Lehmann. Does that mean anything?

Triple Dee
Apr 16 2008 07:20 AM

I respectfully disagree about Ebouseless - his rare moments of skill are outweighed by poor pass selection, constant loss of possession, non-existent shooting ability and volatile conduct and other related histrionics. If you critique Hleb and Rosicky for not scoring enough, well, Ebouseless has never scored.

Fabianski is a very good keeper -- it's rare for a European keeper to be capped 6 times before his 23rd birthday, and Poland has some very good keepers to choose from. The CC semi-final 2nd leg v Sp*rs was an aberration. Oh, btw, Jens says he doesn't hate Almunia -- lol, can you feel the love?!

Btw, I don't believe Ben Arfa is the solution-- I've seen him play enough times this season to believe he won't be a success at Arsenal. Rafael van der Vaart (HSV) is more the type of winger they need -- one who scores goals, like Pires.

Also I very much doubt Eduardo will ever fully recover (ref Robin Ventura's problems to an injury which was almost identical) so I think another striker is an absolute necessity; since Benzema is a pipe dream, I think Diego of Werder Bremen is a more realistic possibility. He's more of a support striker like Bergkamp, and scores regularly.

Past PFA winners since 1974.

There is a mistake in here , can you spot it?

The major mistake to me is that the list does not show the teams for which each of them won the award. Since the bios say that some of them have played for multiple teams, I would think fans reading the list in the future would like to know that information.

EDIT: Now that I read it more closely, it also includes players who had since retired. So I guess it isn't strictly an "MVP" type of list. But in some cases it seems to be.

I'm rooting for Chelsea today. It feels gross, but just a bit less disgusting than rooting for United.

Ashley Cole's in the lineup today, though, so that's not helping any.

Fucking gag.

Congrats Irish.

Again.

WOW , I actually couldn't take of work today but managed to not see the score , watched the replay on espn2...fucking wow , United I thought just about edged the game , certainly had the better players in the likes of Tevez , yeah he missed two sitters but never stopped working.

Fifty years after the Munich tragedy Manchester United are Champions of Europe , and that's fitting.

They're still a bunch of wankers.

I was wondering if you were taping it or anything. That's how I live everyday in baseball season. Lots of 4PM starts and avoiding TV's, computers, and telephones.

Lonely existence.

Irish, what's the deal with this guy? I missed the Stoke game last week thankfully.

I can't see that video here at work , but I am guessing it's Rory Delap and his howitzer style throw ins?

It's perfectly legal and teams are having a hell of a time trying to defend it , something like 8 of Stokes 13 gaols have come from Delap throws causing havoc in the area.

Rory was capped 11 times for Ireland.

Rory was a javelin thrower in school and he credits that with giving him arm strength.

Managers liken his throw ins to fee kicks , they are that flat and he generates great power in them.

For some reason I thought it was against the rules to throw in to the box around the goal, but I guess I'm wrong.

I remember a highlight film from a bunch of years ago of a U.S. college game where the thrower took a running start into a headstand (ball-stand?) and then continued the flip back onto his feet at which point he let the ball go where it traveled about 1/2 the length of the field like it was shot out of a cannon and led directly to a goal.
Not sure if they outlawed that move afterward or not.

I assume that a throw going directly into the goal isn't legal?

I've seen guys do the flip and throw , I don't see why a goal direct from a throw would not be legal , one form a corner kick is, having said that I cannot remember ever seeing it happen.

Kim Pickup of WUSA did the flip all the time. It was gorgeous.
