the top 10 (if not top 5) drummers in rock

I just read this remark in the big boring bands thread and found it to be a funny enough turn of phrase to be worth a thread of its own.

So, give me your top 10 (if not top 5) drummers in rock

Um... drummers, off the top of my head:

the guy from Dave Matthews Band
Rick Allen (Come on! The guy has one fucking arm! Top that!)
Tommy Lee
Joey Kramer
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)
Alex Van Halen
Harry James (Thunder)
the girl with the afro from Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way" video
Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters)
Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel)
Sheila E
Ringo Starr
Roger Taylor or John Deacon (whichever one played drums - I always get them confused)
the dead guy from the Who
Mick Shrimpton
the guy from the Grateful Dead video who wears the Celtics jacket
Rikki Rockett
Lars Ulrich
Derrick Bostrom
the guy from the Bravery who used to drum with a guy works in my office
Steven Adler

Drummers are hard to remember.

Top 10? For me, it's Mike Portnoy first, Ringo second, then everyone else.

I'm glad someone mentioned him, the forgotten dead drummer.

We went down this road. I think division fell over the quality of the Dave Matthews guy.

If my memory is correct on this topic (although it has been a while) as soon as 'Number 6' discovers this thread he's going to add a thorough trashing of Neil Peart.

I think that was slugger.

One Roger Taylor (aka (Roger Meadows-Taylor played drums for Queen, and another one played drums for Duran Duran. (Both were sci-fi influenced bands, too.)

Deacon played bass, and wrote some of the cooler Queen songs.

Rob Hirst of Midnight Oil belongs in any discussion of elite drummers.
And such a discussion should start with, or at least quickly come to, Jerry Allison of The Crickets.
I still have a soft spot for Keith Moon.
Larry Mullen Jr.
It's tough for a Rolling Stone to be underrated, but I think Charlie Watts is just that.

If I recall the old thread, I listed...

Larry Mullen, Jr.
Stewart Copeland
DJ Bonebrake
Tony Thompson, and...

I think the bald guy from Mellancamp's band.

Phil Collins when he was a drummer.

My other possible fifth guy might have been Andy Rankin of the Pogues. He's darn good.

Yeah, as KC mentions that wasn't me. I actually grew up with Rush and Neil Peart. These days I agree with many that it's over the top, but the man deserves his props for his musicianship, and for being influential enough to be badly imitated by many.

I'm actually a drummer/percussionist, so this is fun. Here are my favorites, in no particular order:

Ringo Starr
Manu Katche
Steve Gadd
Chester Thompson
Danny Carey
Yuval Gabay
John Bonham
Jon Fishman
Stewart Copeland
Dave Grohl

I remembered that you were a drummer which is probably why I connected you to the lengthy anti-Peart rant somebody put up here years ago. I even wound up directing my brother to the site for that one because he's a huge Peart/Rush fan.

Maybe it was Slugger (who still pops up out of the ether once every blue moon) or some other no longer active member.

Anybody have luck finding the original thread?

Keith Moon

And for the rest:

Carl Palmer
Ginger Baker
John Bonham
Ringo Starr (underrated)
Charlie Watts
Meg White (manages to make a guitar/drum duo work).
Michael Giles

Meg White blows dead bears.

John Bonham
Keith Moon
Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
Neil Peart
Ginger Baker

Ya I am old school.

Minus Meg White I go with Chuck's list.
