Filin' and filin' but certainly not smilin'

I owe the feds $2,874 and the district $598.

I'm one broke chump. I'm thinking of getting married at the falafel stand down the street. "You want tahini?! What do I look like?!"

That's what you get for being one of the richest Americans.

When's this refund comng?

Benjamin Grimm

July, I think.

I owed money for the first time this year. ($670.)

My mortgage has reached a point where I'm not getting the interest deduction that I used to get. And with my day care expenses having dropped a bit, that deduction has also been reduced.

My employer no longer has an HR director, so I'm not sure who to see about them not withholding enough --- the comptroller or the COO, I think.

You just need to submit a new W-4. I guess the question is, to whom?

Don't you have a payroll manager? Or is your payroll outsourced?

I thiink it's outstourced. The comptroller or the office manager distributes our checks, so I'll start with them. Hate the COO, but she "took over" a lot of HR role.

We put our stuff into TaxCut. When we put in our day care expenses (over $11,000 in 2007), a little dialog box came up that said "Are you sure? That seems like a lot.")

Eff you, Tax Cut.

I got a refund check this year ($85). We made $1,000 too much, however, for us to claim any deductions for our daughter's college tuition on the federal form. For some reason, however, we got to claim it on the NY State Form. For the first time in I don't remember how long I will get something back from the state.

For the first time ever I took the plunge and did my own taxes , I had gone to a tax "expert" at H&R ad she had me owing the State $600 , not surprisingly when I did it myself they owed me $508 , everything looks legit because they have accepted it and I got a fed refund last week.

We're getting state $$ back this year too for the first time in like, forever. Feds owe us a bundle but we're socking it all away.

Right after we had our first kid, I went to H&R Block who had us owing all sorts of money to the Feds. This was a time we really could have used money but what can you do? -- I paid it. Several years later I get a letter from the IRS saying that that filing was done incorrectly and that they owed me money --- plus interest. Of course they taxed me the next year on the interest but whatever. Moral: do not patronize H&R Block.

with the fed tax rebate coming, i'm just about even on both State and Fed taxes...which is where i like to be

My wife loves getting a big refund, but a big refund just means that you overwithheld, and you were letting the govt hold your money (interest free) all year. I prefer to hold my own money, thank you very much.

The wife and I are still awaiting the final verdict from our tax accountant. He's had all the paperwork for 2 weeks and still no word, which really makes me nervous. I'm assuming that we will be filing an extension. I remember when this was a relatively simple process.

I got you all beat-- we owe a combined $8K. (I blame my wife, who works a number of part-time jobs from which no taxes are withheld).

Owe the over-priced war chest about the same amount we're getting back
from the over-priced brothel chest. One hand-job to another.

We have lots deducted and therefore we get a fat refund. Between federal and state is was in the neighborhood of $1500.

How about five big ones to the Edgy Fund?

We owed this year. D-Dad's company was purchased last year, and we had some stock income as a result.

Turbo Tax rocks. We were paying Jackson Hewitt something like $250 each year to do the taxes, and two years ago the person hired by them looked at me and said, "Why aren't you doing Turbo Tax? You can handle it." Which is what my Dad had been telling me for years.

We got back a nice refund.

Another thumbs-up for TurboTax. No muss no fuss.

I didn't use Turbo Tax but I did use one of the many free sites that are on irs.gov. After all my trepidation the process could not have been simpler , and this with my status changing after getting married and with a son.

This is who I used for free.

I've been TurboTaxing since 1995. Very easy to use.

I am strictly an old-fashioned pen-and paper, do-it-yourself man (typing it once finished). Taught by my father at a very young age to do it that way. (Granted my return is probably not as complicated as some).

Extension filed, but preliminary word is we should see a small amount of money back from both state and federal. Accountant said it should combined be about enough for the wife and I to enjoy a nice dinner and a movie later this spring. I'm quite happy with that.

Thanks to my son's Hope Credit, we will get about $1700 back, our first refund since I don't know when.

The school district owes us $400; they are going to be ticked off!

Of course we owed PA a dollar.

My dad did our taxes forever, but taught me how about 5 years ago. He was an accountant and this was a busy time of year for him

I scratch my return on a brick and throw it through the window of the IRS building.

One year NYS owed me something like 55 cents - and they sent back a letter (worth 30-whatever cents in postage) to tell me that they don't cut checks for under a dollar.

they know where you live and will charge you for that window, with interest.

I've used TaxAct Online the last two years. Akin to Turbo Tax but half the cost, all done in a web browser, and still getting me big refunds.
