Mike Pelfrey (1.50 ERA) is poised to take Adam Eaton's lunch today, but he'll have to wait until tonight. Thanks ESPN.

Church was doing great hitting 2nd, why move him back down? He's a better hitter than Castillo by far.
Once Alou gets back, if he ever does, I'd like to see Church 2nd every day instead of 7th between Alou and Schneider.

Speaking of Schneider is he seriously injured?

Valadius
Apr 20 2008 05:06 PM

What the hell? The lineup functioned perfectly with Church 2nd and Castillo 8th. Fuck Castillo's ego.

Rockin' Doc
Apr 20 2008 05:07 PM

Nymr -"Church was doing great hitting 2nd, why move him back down? He's a better hitter than Castillo by far."

I had the same reaction when I read the line ups. If Willie insists on playing Castillo everyday, then he should leave him in the 8th spot in the order where he belongs. I guess Willie likes that Castillo is a better bunter than Church.

TheOldMole
Apr 20 2008 05:10 PM

Castillo does a lot of things well from the two-hole. Church is effective down in the power pocket of the lineup. If Castillo is going to stay north of the Mendoza line, this will be OK.

AG/DC
Apr 20 2008 05:34 PM

I'm going to think that, with Pagan out of the lineup, Randolph thought they looked weak down the bottom half of the lineup. An alternative was sticking the little-used-thus-far Chavez in the second slot, but Randolph, and all of us, have an interest in rehabilitating Castillo and his confidence, and that might mean an occasional return to the two hole to see if he can re-assert himself. It happens.

That's pretty much what Willie said on the pre-game.

Schneider's day-to-day at this point ... but, then again, aren't we all?

In a surprise move the Phillies DL'd Jimmy Rollins after sitting him out for 10 days in which he got only 4 PHs or so. So no back-dating either since he PH'd just yesterday.
Also, the recently called-up Chris Snelling is also DL'd (I think that's the 400th time in his career although I'd have to check on the exact amount).
Two scrubs I've never heard of were called up for tonight's game.

Burrell out at 2nd by a country mile...

OlerudOwned
Apr 20 2008 07:35 PM

Just watching Pelfrey's stuff today, I don't have much faith in his ability to be successful. The ESPN booth keeps talking about his fastball, his fastball, his fastball, and they've been basically right in scouting it right. But they haven't said a word about his offspeed stuff, or lack there of, and why it's going to kill him.

He seems to be back to trying the changeup as his primary off speed pitch again, but it's not working. Looking at the Pitch F/X information of his changeup, the velocity at the time of release is way, way slower than on his fastball, which would suggest that he still can't throw a change without slowing his arm down. That's not going to fool anybody.

The Utley at-bat in the 3rd summed it up pretty well. You can sit on his fastball all day, and if you're a good enough hitter to avoid letting it blow you away, you've got him cornered. Eventually he's going to wear down or miss his spots with the fastball and people are going to kill it or draw walks. His fastball has natural sink, but not to the Wang or Webb degree that he's going to be able to get by on it without an offspeed pitch to keep people honest.

It's funny, as big a Mets killer as he is, I've always sort of liked him as a player. Almost out of pity, too. He just seems like a very underappreciated hitter in the Dunn mold.

Went to the game. Everything key covered here except I can't help but add to the chorus of Luis Castillo is a stinking pile of crap. I didn't think the bunt was the right call (smacks of playing for the tie, which, on the road, doesn't seem like a good idea) but no matter what, he has to -- at the very minimum -- move the runners up.

Philly is turning into a very nasty place to see a game. I'm sure there was the usual complement of Mets fans behaving badly (fitting in perfectly with the scores of Philly fans behaving badly) but I'm not a big cheer obnoxiously/taunt other fans while on the road kind of person, and we got berated with things that I can't repeat here, particularly after the game.

Seems like people are very much on edge in Philly about their team this year. The "Still the team to beat" signs they had were pretty pathetic, as were the fans there after salvaging only a second win (out of 6 games) against the Mets.

I've been getting that same vibe. Even though it's the most convenient place (for me) to see a Mets game, I'd rather make the trip to Shea.

Next year, if Citi Tickets are too hard (or expensive) to come by, I'll try to satisfy my Mets jones by going to Washington.

The little bit of talk radio I listened to this weekend was filled with stories from callers about fights, harrassment, over-zealous security, and just general unpleasentness during this Met-Philly series.

Both sides, of course, blamed each other for inciting most of the trouble although there seemed to be a general agreement that things were far worse than anything you'd consider "normal".
Sounds like some are taking this newly amped up rivalry a bit too seriously.
