Anyone know why the Mets are playing two games at Wrigley this year, and the Cubs are playing four at Shea?

Is there going to be a similar shift with another Central Division club? Or is this just one of those inexplicable quirks that comes with the wacky schedule?

Or is the pope somehow at fault?

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Thought Anderson woulda got the start at 1B despite the lefty.... That was the speculation on radio last nite.

No

Well, it'll have to work out to 81/81 somehow so there's got to be a different imbalance somewhere.

]Or is the pope somehow at fault?

Don't be silly, it's Heilman's fault.

We could wind up visiting Wrigley again in the playoffs. Best Cub start since 1985, according to to this blog with a million comments already.

Still scoreless through 3.

I wonder if Figueroa's family is back at Shea, watching the game on TV from Billy Wagner's luxury box?

Nymr83
Apr 22 2008 01:10 PM

Ted lilly is PERFECT through 10 batters, thats right, he's throwing a PERFECT game... (you can still jinx those things right?)

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 22 2008 01:11 PM

You can try!

For a second I thought Pagan had plunked in an extra base hit, but it was foul by a fair amount.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 22 2008 01:12 PM

And there's the actual extra-base hit.

Pagan doubles into the gap between right and center.

Pagan with a revenge smash.

jinx successful.

now lets try again... lilly is throwing a SHUTOUT, he's SHUTTING OUT the Mets.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 22 2008 01:19 PM

Beltran walks too.

Delgado, bases loaded, one out.

I smell a double play. I'm thinking a grand slam will be nicer. (And will smell nicer too.)

Benjamin Grimm

No DP, but no run comes home either.

Easley is up.

Nymr83
Apr 22 2008 01:21 PM

Delgado pops up and its Easley with bases loaded...

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 22 2008 01:21 PM

I'm going to invoke that old axiom about how you're never as bad as you look when you're losing.

Just a couple of days ago, the Mets were riding a five-game winning streak and were on the verge of sweeping the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

They've had a dreadful two days in Chicago. But there's still some hope that they'll be a good team this year.

(As I'm typing this, Ramirez scares me by almost hitting a three-run homer.)

Grand slam by Cedeno. Sosa has had a rough time in Wrigley.

Centerfield
Apr 22 2008 03:20 PM

Wow. This is like, the exact same game.

You know, the reason Jorge Sosa can't be moved into the rotation is because he's so valuable out of the pen.

Gwreck
Apr 22 2008 03:21 PM

In fairness, I don't think there's any great need for Sosa in the rotation right now.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 22 2008 03:21 PM

The Mets had the infield in with the bases loaded for the previous batter.

Gary was wondering why they didn't play back for the inning-ending double play.

The batter hits a hard grounder to short which could have been two had the infield been at DP depth. Instead Jose gets the force at home; then Casanova's throw to first wasn't in time.

The decision to play the infield in ends up leading to a grand slam.

yeah, i can see how a guy with a 900 ops each of the last 4 years can scare you.

so he'll miss half the year, at least he'll be great when he's here. thats beter than being mediocre or worse the whole year.

Frayed Knot
Apr 22 2008 05:26 PM

Alou could make a difference; Castro not so much.

The infield in was one thing - although one can make an argument for trying to keep it at a two-run game at that point - but Reyes looked to have plenty of time to turn two but chose instead to go home. He didn't need to take just the one out simply because he was shaded that way.

But basically we didn't hit, didn't pitch, didn't play 'D', and weren't all that smart either. The screamers are going to be looking for scapegoats but this was a group effort.
