(1B watch) I've seen enough of Nick Johnson..

...to know I'll be happy to see him wearing a Mets uniform next season. He's the type of hitter that would allow DW5 to become more aggressive. He's still relatively young (30) and he's cheap ($16.5M thru 09), so Omar can give Pedro that 3-year extension.

Adam Dunn is currently hitting a bizarre .182/.413/.341 (2HR). An FA next season, he's almost certain to be traded in July as the Reds will have long cashed-in their chips by then.

Problem is apart from Jonathan Niese (who incidentally has a 0.57 ERA after 3 GS for the B-Mets) I don't think the Mets have anybody who may interest these teams.

Teixeira, otoh, will probably not re-sign with the Braves, but let's be honest, the Botox and MFY will throw crazy money at him.

Yeah I kinda like him too; I was making the same argument at the game the other night. Willie may also have a thing for him given his MFY bloodlines.

Another option would be to shift DW to 1B too early rather than too late, if it comes to that.

And Omar with his Expo bloodlines.

At this point, why on earth is there any discussion about giving Pedro an extension? He is either mailing it in with us or is clearly prone to injury. . .either way, I will be happy to see him on his way at the end of the year.

As for Nick Johnson. When healthy, he is a great first baseman that would certainly fill our needs. However, injuries have plagued his career. If he plays most of this year, I would be on board to sign him if Teixeira is out of the picture.

Lets not forget his Metly connections through Larry Bowa....

HC , I think 3D is taking the piss Aussie style in regards to Pedro.......

Ahh, okay. . .that makes much more sense.

I wouldn't rule out Tex becoming a Met just because of the Sox and the Yankees.

Remember, the conventional wisdom was that those same two teams were going to prevent Santana from becoming a Met. And there was no way that the Mets were going to get Beltran; he was also destined to be a Yankee.

If the Mets decide to go after Teixeira, they'll have a chance to get him.

Teixeira has spoken fondly of playing in his home town of Baltimore. Angelos has the money and likes to make splashy signings, I wouldn't rule him out there.

Nick Johnson's problem has been staying healthy and his defense can be questionable. One of these years, though, he'll have a breakout season and if it is in orange-and-blue I'd be happy with that.

As we see now, Dunn's slumps run deep. And we already know his whiff rate is titanic. With the intolerance exhibited by the Shea unfaithful these days, they'd be showng up with pitchforks the first time the guy exhibits his downside. Summary: I don't see him as a good match.

Dealing with the Nats is always a strange proposition. They haven't dealt Felipe Lopez or Dmitri Young, neither of whom will play much for them this year. (I'm not sure what their thinking is there.) And it cost Lastings Milledge to get two guys they were looking to dump. (I can understand Schneider, but I'm still not sure why they soured on Ryan Church.) And their asking price for Chad Cordero last year was obscene; I wonder what they can get for his 78 MPH fastball now?

I really like Nick Johnson, but the Nats could make the price really prohibitive if they feel like dealing him at all.

As for Teixeira, the Sox have Youkilis and Lowell under control so I think they'd rather spend on pitching. The Yankees could get in a bidding war with us for sure, but Teixeira's agent is Scott Boras, and under current circumstances I think that gives us an edge.

They're also desperate for starting pitching and are unlikely to be competitive over the next 2 1/2 years. A deal involving Niese will definitely pique their interest.

Did Youkilis sign an extension, because I was under the impression he'll be an FA next year?

I just realized doesn't have the required years of service. My bad.

Until proven otherwise, the only edge that gives is the person offering the most money.

Kansas City provides the most money? That's where Teixeira will sign.

The problem in trying to trade with the Nationals is that Bowden doesn't just want to deal to improve his team, he wants to rip you off--he wants to take your best player and your pants and then crow about it to the press.

That's why the Mets couldn't get Cordero from him at the trading deadline in '07 (which might have helped stop the you-know-what but he might have an injured arm now) because he wanted Pelfry and the Mets "only" offered Humber. (I might have that backwards but Bowden wanted much more than Cordero was worth.)

And that's also why the Nationals got nothing for Soriano. They could have traded him at the deadline but Bowden was going for the kill. As a result, he left as a FA.

They wanted Humber and Gomez for Cordero. And now they'll get nothing.

They did the Milledge deal because it was a high-upside young player for two guys they didn't think had much value. The numbers and defensive metrics said otherwise on Church, but they had made it clear from the start of the offseason that they were looking to move him.

Like I said, I wouldn't mind having Nick Johnson if he's healthy, but I just don't see a reasonable offer getting it done.
