HahnSolo
Apr 30 2008 12:20 PM

Top second and Ollie has already walked three. 2 on, 1 out.

HahnSolo
Apr 30 2008 12:20 PM

Make it four walks. The bags are drunk with one away.

AG/DC
Apr 30 2008 12:21 PM

Four now.

No way to be.

HahnSolo
Apr 30 2008 12:25 PM

Error on a Gorzellany grounder by Castillo and its 1-0.

bmfc1
Apr 30 2008 12:27 PM

Can Perez declare for free agency right now?

HahnSolo
Apr 30 2008 12:27 PM

Ugh. Mclouth bases loaded walk and its 2-0. Thats 5 BBs for Perez.

holychicken
Apr 30 2008 12:27 PM

And then he walks in a run. 4 walks in the inning already. . . ugh

AG/DC
Apr 30 2008 12:27 PM

Well, if you can't trust your fielders, better walk another guy.

Worst. No-hitter. Ever.

bmfc1
Apr 30 2008 12:28 PM

"This is just an acceptable performance from Oliver Perez" says Howie Rose. I wonder if John Sterling ever said anything like that about a Yankee.

Apr 30 2008 12:28 PM

Safe to say that my IGT starting CAHNfidence is going to be shot after this debacle , thanks a fucking bunch Ollie.

Not anymore. 3-0 on a Sanchez hit.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 30 2008 12:30 PM

Yeah, Perez um... sucks.

AG/DC
Apr 30 2008 12:31 PM

trade him for Nady before they leave town?

Apr 30 2008 12:31 PM

At this rate Boras will fire Perez.

Willets Point

This isn't looking pretty on gameday. Please tell me the animation has just gone screwy.

Apr 30 2008 12:36 PM

Wow, at least this game was over real quick.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Ollie out, Figgy in, crooked numbers expanding.

I think Kukla could pitch as well as Ollie is pitching today. Maybe even Fran.
They used six pitchers yesterday and now this.
On the pregame radio show, Willie said Figueroa is able to pitch in either short or long relief today.
But, eight innings? (EDIT: JCL postedabout the pitching change while I was typing that)

AG/DC

Seven. Seven is a crooked number.

Can we break another water main?

HahnSolo
Apr 30 2008 12:40 PM

How bad was the Castillo error? Did anyone see it?

MFS62
Apr 30 2008 12:40 PM

I don't care what the box score shows, Perez deserved to earn every one of those runs.

Later

HahnSolo
Apr 30 2008 12:43 PM

Of course, when you walk 5. That doesn't mean your second baseman can't make a play behind you when you are struggling. I didn't see the play, so just wondering how bad of an error it was.

Willets Point
Apr 30 2008 12:45 PM

I hate it when my favorite pitcher sucks. Granted I didn't like it when someone like Tom Glavine sucked for the Mets but at least I could be angry with him.

Centerfield
Apr 30 2008 12:51 PM

This is the problem with Perez. He's going to turn in a start like this every now and then.

metirish

7 - 0 in the 3rd , yikes.

It was a Little League error. He took his eye off the ball before it was in his glove.

AG/DC
Apr 30 2008 01:15 PM

Gorzelanny has a mid-eighties fastball. It's got some movement, but that hasn't mattered much this seaason so far.

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 01:24 PM

Gorzelanny is also the one who came into the game with a walk-an-inning habit, or about double what Perez had been doing.

AG/DC
Apr 30 2008 01:44 PM

Ten.

We're in Boo-Bird Heaven.

themetfairy

Wright's error makes it 10-0 Pirates.

Shall we just invoke the Mercy Rule and call it a day?

We were at the park the other day and there was a girl's softball game going on, and one team scored 6 runs and then had to take the field even though they'd not made 3 outs. An interesting variation on the mercy rule I'd not seen before.

AG/DC
Apr 30 2008 01:51 PM

In 1999, there was a 16-0 shutout loss to the Braves. I think that's our worst shutout shellacking.

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 01:51 PM

The defense isn't doing him any favors, but Sosa is still rapidly moving himself into danger of being released whenever they decide Wise is ready to come back.
Smith's job looks safer each time Jorge throws a pitch.

Benjamin Grimm

Holy crap!

I just got out of a meeting and checked the score for the first time.

All of my years of coaching baseball we had that rule. Part of the strategy in making up a lineup was to figure out how you would score 6 runs as often as possible which meant spreading your "outs" throughout the lineup.

sharpie
Apr 30 2008 01:55 PM

For this game today maybe we should have a position player pitch the ninth. I nominate Marlon Anderson.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 30 2008 01:58 PM

Yeah the Snooze raised the possibility of Wise replacing Soso even before today's beatdown. Not clear who the long guy is at that point but that's a minor concern I suppose.

The way things look perhaps Figgy is destined to be the long guy and Vargas or someone like him, takes' Ollie's job in the rote.

Was Perez injured? Is he going to miss some starts?

John Cougar Lunchbucket

No, he's just been awful this year... and I was thinking ahead.

metirish
Apr 30 2008 02:00 PM

Would you not want to keep Figgi in the rotation , he's been good so far.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 30 2008 02:01 PM

Figgy's the one most likely to be displaced by Pedro, whenever he finally returns. That is, unless Oliver Perez gets Zitoed.

Yeah I suppose , I had forgot about Petey , no doubt Perez gets plenty of rope here though.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 30 2008 02:03 PM

Eh.

You know, anyone, even young Aaron Heilman, even 40-year-old David Cone, can have a great start in the cold weather agisnt a bad team and gain a lotta early season momentum. I mean, Figgy's performances are looking more and more like that which you'd expect to see from a journeyman.

Willets Point
Apr 30 2008 02:04 PM

Zitoed? You mean win a Cy Young Award at a young age? That would be awesome.

Yeah, I know it's not what you mean, but a boy can dream.

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 30 2008 02:05 PM

Yeah. I'd rather see him (Figueroa) as a long reliever than as a regular starter.

And based on his last three starts, Oliver Perez is welcome to leave via free agency at his earliest convenience.

I'm sure he'll be better than he's been, but I won't mourn his departure if that's how it plays out.

I'm hoping that missed extra point comes back to haunt the Steelers.

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 02:08 PM

Figgy as long-man is his most likely eventual destination IMO.
And if he has to remain in the rotation it probably means we've got bigger problems than just him.

metirish
Apr 30 2008 02:15 PM

I agree that Figgi ends up in the pen at some point, and certainly I don't think he's going to turn into a great pitcher but all things staying the same he gets how many more starts before Pedro gets back or some other moves get made , 3 , 4 5?

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 30 2008 02:18 PM

This is a nice low-pressure spot to get Heilman an inning.

Centerfield
Apr 30 2008 02:18 PM

Jorge Sosa is not very good.

When the score was 7-0, it was time for the brief news roundup on WCBS (the Yankees' station).
Of course, the sportscaster said "The Mets are down by a touchdown".
And he sounded like he thought he was so clever for coming up with that.

And, a shout out to the folks who have posted in the "I don't like booing" thread.
If you want to boo after watching this game so far, we won't tell.

Willie's using his reserves as pinch hitters when he should be using them to get his stars out of the game.

Let Wright and Beltran sit out the last few innings.

I'm always torn as to whether or not I should try to ignore the score and watch the game that night not knowing the outcome.

Today I stumbled upon the score unintentionally and now I'm glad I did. Maybe I can get something else done tonight.

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 02:44 PM

Sucky day games really suck when they come in advance of a day off, and particularly when they come in front of a day off followed by a west coast game ... like this one.

That makes it like 2-1/2 days until the next game.

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 02:49 PM

Well, my old adage for putting game like these behind you still applies:
If you're going to hit like crap, pitch like crap, and field like crap, you might as well do them all at the same time so as to ruin only one game.

Fman99
Apr 30 2008 02:49 PM

Wow two fucking hits. That's it.

Grote15
Apr 30 2008 03:22 PM

Reminds me of the early season losses to bad teams that bit us in the ass last September..3 or 4 already.

This West Coast trip frightens me...They have real pitching out there and we dont reallt, uh, like hit much

Marlins are the class of the division right now.

G-Fafif
Apr 30 2008 05:22 PM

I was there. It was freezing. It was a farce. It was September 30 Lite. It was inane dronery. It was, by the end, quite spacious in every section.

It was frigging 1978 out there today.

It would be some consolation if they had a longer recent track record of pitching, hittin,g or fielding otherwise well.

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 08:12 PM

Well, not that I want to sound like I'm being overly optimistic after a 13-1 clusterfuck, but we are over .500 while both scoring and preventing runs at a better than league average clip ... meaning that our H/P/F can't be all THAT bad.

Not what we'd like them to be maybe but hardly a disaster.

And geez I know Perez was awful today but I just saw the Castillo error and the situation in which it occured and DAMN! that one was a killer.
No telling how differently that game turns out if he makes that play.

I missed the game. Didn't Willie say he would rest Castillo in day games that follow night games?

Frayed Knot
Apr 30 2008 08:20 PM

Only if his still re-habbing knees needed it - but that had nothing to do w/the error.
It was just a plain old-fashion bobble while trying to flip that turned one sure out - and quite possibly an inning-ending two - into none and into the 7 run inning that followed.

Here's some consolation that might've gotten lost in yesterday's drubbing and all the talk about the when will willie go poll and the bad food at Shea:

The Mets are in sole possession of first place in the NL East.

Johan Santana, the notoriously slow starting pitcher who is off to another notoriously slow start according to many, is two strikeouts behind league leader Aaron Harang who has pitched eight innings more than Santana has.

And among pitchers with at least one inning pitched for each game played by his team, Santana is second in the NL in K/BB ratio, 2nd in the NL in WHIP, 2nd in the NL in OBPagainst, 6th in the NL in BattingAverageagainst and 7th in the NL in Runs Created ERA. Of course, I cherry picked a little - Johan is 27th in SLGagainst, for example. But try and cherry pick Mark Bomback into this level of success.

Did I mention that the Mets are in first place?
