Schneider's Thumb

Bad news conveyed by Adam Rubin:

Breaking news: Brian Schneider has been sent to New York with an infected left thumb that may require a DL trip. He just landed in New York 40 minutes ago.

There will likely be a roster move to activate Gustavo Molina. We’ll see who is the roster casualty, depending on the seriousness with Schneider.

Where's that thumb been I wonder?

It was his right wrist/arm that got smacked the other day so that's not it.
Castro's been playing down in PSL but I doubt he's ready yet.

Well, it Schneider is DL'ed, then he's the casualty.

If not, then who? Maybe for a day or so it could be Brady Clark; he's due to be replaced by Alou soon anyway.

Oh great.

Wait, if his thumb hurts so badly, why'd he play last night?

I called it...

Brady's been DFA'ed.

Weren't there reports a few years ago that Saddam Hussein was working on engineering a virulent thumb virus?

Don't they have a medical staff around these guys constantly? How does a thumb cut get so bad that it's infected without trainers monitoring it every day?

Reportedly there was no cut and the source/timing of the infection remains a mystery.

Five days in the hospital with a thumb infection? Drug resistant staph maybe? Have open heart surgery and they send you home in 3-4 days.

Schneider has been in a New York hospital since last Thursday with an infection in his left thumb and has been treated with intravenous antibiotics. Minaya said Monday that Schneider did not have a staph infection and that his swelling had not been lanced, but he revised his report Tuesday.

Acknowledging his lack of medical sophistication, Minaya said doctors told him that Schneider had a “mixed organism infection caused by normal skin bacteria,” and that, while it was partly associated with staph, it was not the more serious kind of problem usually associated with a staph infection.
