Here's an ebay auction for an alleged David Cone road Mets jersey, supposedly signed by the pitcher himself. Because the jersey isn't a button down style, it has to be from 1988-1990. And Coney wore #44 in all of those years, not #17 as shown in the pictures. Also, the last name font looks off to me, (too chunky) as does the #7. Numbers also appear slightly shorter than those on real jerseys. Front of jersey looks OK. Maybe this was a crappy homemade attempt to convert a legitimate blank into a Cone jersey.

Fraud Alert!

P.S. Is this the right forum for this kind of post?

I have resolved not to buy any more Mets jersey's from ebay , I bought a Pedro one in 05 and when it came it was not the real thing.

I can see how the Cone jersy would fool people , nice catch.

There was recently, an auction for a Gary Carter Mets jersey from the same era that went for north of $400. I thought that that auction also had some issues. I'll try and dig that one up.

Yes, this is the right forum for it. We've had Mets eBay threads in the past.

MBTN was on a case recently.

Here's the Carter auction.

Again, the front of the jersey looks OK. But the last name font doesn't, although I'm not 100% sure that the font is off. I could've easily researched this, but I didn't because I was only browsing. But there's not enough space between the nameplate and the uniform # on the back. The uniform #'s too high. The very top of the back side uni #s usually line up with the top of the armpit. That 8's too high.

This has been a very bad week for Carter on this forum.

Did you ask for a refund?

I complained to the vendor but it went nowhere and to be honest I didn't follow up , just a note to myself not to buy stuff like that from ebay.

I think the font is rightish on the Carter jersey (closer than the Cone) but you're right about the relative positioning of the number.

You know what else? The color of the numbers ain't right either. Plus they shine too much.

Not to mention, has David Cone EVER signed, or even been called "Dave" Cone in his entire public life?

By coincidence, I was uncluttering the top of my desk just now and I came across a 1991 Mets scorecard with Hubie Brooks on the cover. There was an article inside entitled "Dave Cone - Poised and Ready" The article refers to the pitcher as "Dave" Cone and includes a photograph of an autographed baseball signed as "Dave" Cone. Of course, none of this makes that ebay jersey any more convincing.

The Mets I don't believe think used that extra bend on top of the "7" as pictured in Coney's uni. the letters and numbers are way too stubby and thick

Btw guys, the Mets "Negro league" jersey is now available on sale through the club shop. I'm stoked and I'm buying one now!

Variations on a Theme: 1987 Road Script

Here are a few more goofy Mets jerseys being auctioned off on ebay.

http://tinyurl.com/4kgoxg

Here's a Cooperstown throwback to when the Mets wore their 1987 road script at home. Or when the Mets wore pinstripes on the road. I forget which. It's a size 60 XXX so it's easier for your kids to share this one. Just stuff 'em all in at the same time and march them off to school. Makes a great tent, too. There's a fierce three-way bidding war for this jersey that's pushed the auction all the way up to $1.55. If only they knew how to share better.

http://tinyurl.com/4qf7df

The road lettering on this 1987 road Mets Mitchell & Ness isn't long enough, as the script on the real jerseys starts and ends all the way at the sides of the shirt front. But if you like it when the numbers are higher than your heart, than this one's for you.

http://tinyurl.com/5zbpg5

This 1987 road Mets shirt features orange trim that's about as thick as the blue characters it's supposed to be trimming. And absurdly gigantic numbers that probably belong on the back side. The uniform top also comes with epaulets and appears to be made out of felt. Nuf said.

Are these being passed off as authentic jerseys?

Or are they just being sold as ugly Mets shirts?

The first one is represented as a Cooperstown make. The second one is supposed to be a Mitchell & Ness. These two brands are -when they are what they are - MLB licensed faithful reproductions, more or less, of the real thing - usually an old style of jersey currently discontinued - a throwback. The ebay auctions of those two are, in all likelihood, counterfeits of what they purport to be. The third jersey - I don't know what it is, but it's goofy just the same.

Also, the Cooperstown and M&N jerseys (same outfit -pun!- M&N is the company, Cooperstown Collection is an MLB licensed M&N line - other mfrs. also produce apparel under the Cooperstown Collection brand) are not inexpensive. Those shirts retail for no less than slightly under $200 and occasionally exceed $400 depending on the specific model - thus, the incentive to counterfeit them. (M&N Cooperstown Collection jerseys typically retail in the mid $300's).

Here are some real Mitchell & Ness Cooperstown Collection jerseys:

Do you mean those "Cubans" Negro Leagues jerseys the Mets wore a couple of times, or the Civil Rights jerseys (not Negro Leagues) from last March?

I'm amazed that anyone would spend $300 or $400 for a shirt that you'd feel silly wearing in public.

But maybe that's just me.

Do you mean that you don't like any jerseys, any of the ones pictured or that you only dislike the ones that you dislike?

Benjamin Grimm

I guess I mean that I wouldn't walk around in public wearing half a baseball uniform. Especially not one with somebody else's name on the back.

I see. Well ... for another hundred bucks, you could get the matching pants ... and then you'd be all set.

What would you put on for $19.99?
