Tangled Up in (Orange and) Blue

This was partly inspired by Wednesday's game ... but not really.
Mostly I just had a few phrases kicking around in my head so I started having some fun with Ollie's control problems and Bobby's lyrics.

The thing with Dylan songs, of course, is that they often have an almost infinite number of verses - limited only by the extent of his imagination and that they always come around to the same, or at least a similar, tag line at the end of each.
But since I didn't feel like writing any more beyond this initial stab, I figgered it could make for a good group off-day project (well, not quite off - but no game until 9PM).

So if anyone wants to play add-a-verse just take what I started and go nuts. Half the roster could have their own verse before we're done.

Early one evening I'm watching the Mets
Ollie's out on the mound
Keith going on about his tootsie-pops
'til I just had to mute the sound
Perez his pitches fall around the plate
getting a call is goin' to be tough
Rick surely don't like his drop-down pitch
and no strike-zone is big enough
And me I'm sitting on the edge of the couch
clouds filling up my mind
wondering if I care too much
or if I need to search and find - a hobby new
to replace the Orange and Blue

As Ollie can't control his pitch location
I can't control the pitch of my voice
His is an issue of mechanics and such
I guess mine is just a matter of choice
As he left the mound and washed his hands of the mess
I's about to do the same
But I've always had a problem just walking away
I guess Kingman and Dad are to blame
So I logged onto the Crane Pool
"Is Willie at the end of the line?"
"Is Clemens gonna be locked in a prison?"
"Has Buzz taken leave of his mind?" --- What can we do
To save the orange and blue?

Ollie had a job near the old steel mills
It was working out fine for a spell
But he couldn’t control his breaking pitch
And one day the ax just fell.
So they traded him east to pitch at Shea
In a season that I did enjoy
Makin’ the squad for the playoff run
Right outside of Willets Point.
But while he had some small success
The past was close behind,
We need a steady starter
But his pitches get hit well and they just flew
Over the orange and blue.

He was workin' at a furious pace
As I called out for a beer,
I just kept lookin' at the side of the plate
That his pitches could not come near
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
When I saw him there with his thinning hair
Said to me, "Don't remember my name?"
I uttered somethin' underneath my breath,
And studied the lines on his face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
Went I reached out to shake the hand of Mo Alou,
Mangled up and blue.

Wasn't my idea to lock up Castillo
Four years just seemed insane
His game seemed built on infield hits
And his knees were still in pain
But Minaya walked into his hospital room
And layed that contract down
And I guess I would have signed the thing myself
I'm a fan but I'm not a clown
But all if it came back to me
In the second the other day
Bases loaded and a grounder to him
He just bobbled the game away --- like a kangaroo
Fucking orange and blue

Reyes popped up the first pitch of the frame
over-swung of course
"And Castillo can't hit" cry the fans on the FAN
but ya gotta consider the source
So when his bloop dropped in he stood there on 1st
and he was taking a lead off the base
then he swiped a bag off a slow curve ball
and the deal looked like less of a waste
I watched Wright take strikes for an 0-2 count
and thought he looked ready to sit
til he fouled one off and let some close ones slide
then found a fat one to hit - and a run accrued
for the orange and blue

I snuck down in the 8th to the Loge
Used a ramp and not the stairs
There's crap music blasting though the game's a rout
And revolution's in the air
Then fans starting into booing in droves
And something inside of them died.
They'd hang their heads on the way to the bench
And give interviews snide
And me well I couldn't take it no more and was wishing that I had a joint,
I always think on days like this that I'd even sniff a pint of glue
For the orange and blue.

Great stuff -- I don't think I can join in because I'm too tangled up in the original right now -- my freshman comp students are writing term papers on "Blood on the Tracks."

The Mets flew off to play Arizona
The best team under the sun
Owings, they said, had a heckuva bat
And not too shabby a gun
With Haren matched up against Santana
A win was gonna be tough
But Moises had come along for the ride
He'd been rehabbing long enough
And it suddenly seemed the execution was there
And Willie was strategically sound
Our projected lineup was finally in place
Whatever we'd lost was found --- and we took two
Way to go, orange and blue
