Cheer up, people!

It's May 2nd. The Mets are ready to kick ass and take names.

The run to the pennant begins today.

You heard it here first.

But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr Brightside

Thanks Willets. I needed that, for more than one reason.

It's all a matter of perception.

On Friday, the headline at ESPN.com said "Red-hot Mets defeat Arizona."

I doubt many fans here would have characterized the Mets as "red-hot," but really, as of Saturday morning, they were 4-1 in the previous five games. Mets fans are concentrating on the loss (which was awful) and not on the wins.

And now they're 5-2 in the last seven. Not too shabby.

2-3 from the top team in the league. This May will go down in Mets history as the start of something good. You heard it here first.

OK, so I've officially decided that 2008 is the anti-2007. Last season the Mets were a hot team playing top notch baseball until the end of the series with the Yankees in May. From that point on they played inconsistent to bad baseball.

THIS YEAR, the Yankees series will END their inconsistent to bad malaise and kick off five & a half months of smokin', kick-ass Mets baseball like you've never seen before on the grounds of Shea.

You heard it here first.

Yeah, but the Yanks kinda suck almost as much as the Mets this year.

I told someone today that both teams won't make the playoffs in their final
year at the stadiums and our highlight will be the last game sendoff. I ain't
ready to put in writing though.

Oops.

Need to bump up this all-purpose optimism thread as I may be the only one with any faith left in this team at this point. But I've always looked at the world through blue & orange-tinted glasses.

Here's my optimistic thought for the day:

The Mets don't have to face the Braves again until August 18th. Furthermore it will be another month after that until they once again set foot in the House of Horrors. I'm counting on the Mets having a lock on a playoff position by that point.

I hate to point this out, but last year they had a lock on the playoffs in mid-September, and we all know what happened.

That four game sweep by Atlanta demoralized the fan-crap out of me.

No rah rah 'til we clinch clinch from me me.

By lock I mean clinched a playoff spot whether it be division or wild card.

Another dose of perspective for those who've given up on this team.

Last year on this date, the Philadelphia Phillies were 26-25 and a whopping 7 games back. The Mets by comparison are a bit worse in W-L at 25-26 but only 4.5 games out.

The Mets could be the 2007 Phillies of 2008.

Hey, look how much getting off to a good start helped the Mets last season.

It's not how you start, it's all about how (where) you finish.

Need to bump up the optimism thread amid all the reactionary-ism and fair-weather fanhood.

Lets Go Mets!!!

They are lowering expectations so we can be thrilled and excited over every win!

The bright side is that I have other things going on in my life, and all my hopes for happiness aren't dependent on the Mets being successful.

I'll either be able to enjoy a calm, baseball-free October, or the Mets will give us a hell of a ride over the next 100 games and they'll storm into the playoffs.

I really wanted and expected the last game at Shea Stadium to be a post-season game, filled with meaning.

I've had to adjust that expectation.

Woo-hoo! I found 4 feral kittens in a tree outside of my apartment on Friday, and I spent the whole weekend catching them, getting them to the vet and finding them homes (I'm keeping one). I didn't have to watch the Mets at all!

Here's the problem with that post: the assertion that "nobody's running away with this thing" ... cause that's exactly what the Phillies are starting to do (8-2 in their last 10).

Willets Point
Jun 09 2008 09:51 AM

The Mets were 7-3 in their 10 games prior to San Diego. 10 games does not a season make.

Rockin' Doc
Jun 09 2008 10:50 AM

The Mets are well ahead of the Nationals and still right on the Braves heels.
