Do any of the announcers give his name the Spanish pronunciation? it seems they're all sayign EYN-juhl , instead of ON-hel. Same with Angel Hernandez and other Angels we have heard on SNY.

Not sure about Pagan but there are a fair number of latin players who use the English pronunciation once they're in the U.S. Announcers did use the An-Hell pronunciation for Berroa -- my guess is that the Metly Angels like it that way or they'd say something.

Not necessarily. Sometimes athletes, from another culture or just off the farm, are too shy to speak up. When I was living in Minnesota, Zorro Ver-sallies was a major league regular for several years before he finally let people know that he hated the nickname "Zorro," and preferred to be called by his correctly pronounced name, Zoilo Ver-SAH-yez.

I just figured he preferred Ain-gel instead of Ahn-hell.

I'm with Mole (correct pronunciation: "mo-LAY"). It's the sort of thing you just roll with when you're an 0-4 away from getting optioned out.

btw, Felipe Alou mentioned a couple years back (maybe for the first time) that back home his name is pronounced not uh-LOO but something closer to uh-LOW -- as in, sounds like [u:146d757883]Allow[/u:146d757883]

In a game I watched earlier this season, the announcer actually said that Pagan preferred the English pronunciation of Angel. Whether the announcer was correct or misinformed, I don't know.

Derby weekend reminds me that the names of jockeys named Angel are generally pronounced the proper way. The only exception that comes to mind is Angel Cordero.

The New York Times is rolling out the accent marks with "Ángel Pagán."

Can we say it was a diving catch into the stands to make it sound better?

If only Ángel bloodied his chin he would be hailed for his courage and intangibles .

He would need less range too, I think.
