Clemens apologizes for 'mistakes', being a douche

Saying he had made "mistakes" in his personal life, Roger Clemens apologized to his family and the public on Sunday.

In his first public comments since he was linked to an extramarital affair, the former New York Yankees pitcher issued a statement that did not detail what those mistakes were.

Clemens did take the opportunity to deny that he had an affair with country singer Mindy McCready, as was reported by the New York Daily News. He also said that he had not taken performance-enhancing drugs.

"I know that many people want to know what I have to say about the recent articles in the media," Clemens said in the statement. "Even though these articles contain many false accusations and mistakes, I need to say that I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry. I have apologized to my family and apologize to my fans. Like everyone, I have flaws. I have sometimes made choices which have not been right."

Clemens' statement was first reported by the Houston Chronicle

Citing anonymous sources, the Daily News reported that Clemens "carried on a decade-long affair with country star Mindy McCready, a romance that began when McCready was a 15-year-old aspiring singer performing in a karaoke bar and Clemens was a 28-year-old Red Sox ace and married father of two."

In the statement, Clemens said: "Now, I have been accused of having an improper relationship with a fifteen-year-old girl. Nothing could be further from the truth. This relationship has been twisted and distorted far beyond reality. It is just one of many, many accusations that are utterly false."

Clemens refused to reveal the reason for public declaration but concluded: "I realize that many people want me to simply confess and apologize for the conduct that I have been accused of, but I cannot confess to, nor apologize for, things I did not do. I have apologized to my family for my mistakes. And having offered this apology to the public, I would ask that you let me and my family deal with these matters in private."

Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said Friday he will talk with his client about whether to proceed with the defamation suit following a wave of unpleasant publicity.

"He's getting pummeled," attorney Rusty Hardin said then. "I've never seen somebody get beat up like this. In some ways, I think we're on uncharted ground."

The decision on whether to drop the suit rests with Clemens.

"That's always a decision the client has to make," Hardin said. "That's not the lawyer's decision."

Remember, when making such apologies, you need to have your lips tucked into a frown.

Shows sincerity, or something.

He denied having an affair with a 15 year old girl but said nothing about having an affair with that same girl once she turned 16.

That's true Rusty. It is the client's decision. It is, however, the lawyer's job to advise the client about all of the different consequences involved in commencing an action. It is the lawyer's job to discuss possible outcomes, likelihood of success, the information that could be made public as a result of the suit. In other words, it was your job to chart that ground. It was on you to discuss these things with your client's agent and make sure he was aware of the PR consequences.

Oh well. In the event Asshat is unhappy with his representation, Sage & Field LLP is a full-service firm ready to step in and bungle things even further.

Yeah, I was going to speak to that. The only thing that makes this uncharted is that people this rich and this famous in water this deep tend to have a real lawyer, Pete Rose excepted.

That's the old SNL "Two Mile Island" skit, where "Baba Wawa" reported that 'wumors are wunning wampant' that the President has been exposed to 'wethal wevels of wadiation' and had become huge.

Press Conference:
Q: (to press secretary) Is it true the President is now 90 feet tall?
A: No, absolutely not!
Q: Is he 80 feet tall?
A: No comment

You were working as a singer in a karaoke bar When I met you I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around Turned you into someone new Now thirteen years later on you've got the world at your feet Success has been so easy for you But don't forget its me who put you where you are now And I can put you back down too

It's about as bullshit of an apology as one can make. Clemens seems to be apologizing while simultaneously continuing to deny all the negative recent reports about him. It's an apology about nothing.

Similar to the one issued by Giambi regarding PED's accusations. Apparently, such apologies are the Yankee way.

I believe what Clemens is truly sorry about is having been caught in his transgressions.

I really don't know what was sadder, that display (which becomes sadder and sadder with each new revelation or situation with Clemens) or the fact that Waldman turned all the negativity she got from it into some sort of attack on women in broadcasting.

So much for it being considered one of the "greatest moments ever" at Yankee Stadium though!

Stop digging, Roger.

Clemens adds to lawsuit against McNamee

NEW YORK - Roger Clemens amended his defamation suit against Brian McNamee on Tuesday, adding a new claim of "intentional infliction of emotional distress."

Clemens' attorneys also filed a 39-page response to the motion to dismiss that McNamee's lawyers made on March 4.

Clemens claims McNamee, his former personal trainer, was "malicious and grossly negligent" when McNamee told baseball investigator George Mitchell last year that Clemens had used steroids and human growth hormone. Clemens also said McNamee defamed him when he repeated his accusations to SI.com.

Much of the filing was filled with the legal rationale for why a Texas court should have jurisdiction over McNamee, a New York resident.

"When a person who is not a resident of the state of Texas intentionally defames a Texas resident, it is fair and should be expected that they have to defend their conduct in a Texas court before a Texas jury," Joe Roden, one of Clemens' lawyers, said in a telephone interview.

Hospital to remove Clemens' name

ESPN.com news services

HOUSTON -- The Roger Clemens Institute for Sports Medicine, which opened in January 2007, will no longer carry the embattled pitching great's name.

The Memorial Hermann Hospital Health Care System announced Saturday that Clemens' name will be removed, effective Thursday, as the fallout from the Mitchell report continues to haunt the winner of 354 major league games and seven Cy Young awards.

The facility will be renamed the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute.

In its statement, the hospital said the decision to take off Clemens' name was made "to better reflect its commitment to all sports and athletes" and that "the move reflects the desire to promote the broad range of sports medicine services and programs offered by Memorial Hermann."

In November, the New York Daily News reported that Clemens has been asked to end his involvement with a charity golf tournament in Houston that he has hosted for four years.

Although Clemens helped raise millions of dollars for the charities associated with the event, the Giff Nielsen Day of Golf for Kids was held Nov. 11 at Houston's Shadow Hawk Golf Club without him.

Despite its move to disassociate itself with the pitcher, Memorial Hermann Hospital said "Roger Clemens remains committed to working with us to champion youth sports and develop aspiring baseball players."

Clemens donated $3 million to Memorial Hermann for a pediatric wing at Memorial Hermann's Children's Hospital.

Clemens has denied using performance-enhancing drugs since he was identified in former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell's report on drug use in baseball. He filed a defamation lawsuit last January against his former trainer, Brian McNamee, who claims he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone.

Federal prosecutors also are looking into whether Clemens committed perjury when he testified under oath in front of a congressional committee that he never used PEDs.

Clemens is eligible for Hall of Fame election in 2013, but McNamee's allegations may have irreparably damaged Clemens' chances of induction. Clemens has since filed a defamation lawsuit against McNamee.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
