Uncle Cliffy getting the leadoff single to set up that win of Rivera. Rooting big for the Devil Rays this season (of course) and a little bit more because Cliff is there.

Ex-Met and current Red Jeff Keppinger injured badly (broken left kneecap)..had been starting since Opening Day SS Alex Gonzalez had been DL'd with a ...roken left kneecap. Go figure.

I'm just now recalling. Lost in the vein-opening over Keppinger's post-Met success is that his Met opportunities were scuttled when he missed most of 2005 after getting hurt in Norfolk with a... broken kneecap.

If I remember rightly, he was hurt by a takeout slide, which started a minor war when his teammates thought the takeout (by Charlotte's Felix Martinez) was dirty.

The takeout giveth and the takeout taketh away, because Keppinger's intitial big-league callup came after a rash of Met middle-infield injuries culminating when Joe McEwing had his fibula broken on a takeout by JD Closser. McEwing reported being "moved" when he listened to the game on the way to the hospital and heard that teammate Braden Looper retaliated by drilling Closser in the calf the next time he came up.

Hitting the guy is one thing. The real retaliation comes in the press, as happened after the Keppeninger injury with Norfolk, when Tide manager Ken Oberkfell called Martinez "gutless" and "a hot-dogging bush-leaguer who runs and hides behind his teammates."
