Alou is being rested for the yankee series.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 10:56 AM

Oh, that's right. He's going to play in the "Cathedral."

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 10:58 AM

Gary, Keith, and Ron are wayyyy up in the Upper Deck.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:01 AM

Oops, they're not as high us as I first thought. They seem to be just behind the box seats.

Benjamin Grimm

Howie Rose, Art Shamsky, and Ed Kranepool will all drop by during the telecast to say hi.

Hold on a sec , Gary spent all week jawing about doing the game from way up in he nose bleed section , what happened?

Frayed Knot
May 15 2008 11:09 AM

Gary said last night that they were told it was "not logistically feasable" to set them up that high.
Still, even in the lower rows of the upper deck reserved you're sitting pretty damn high.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:12 AM

Yeah, those seats are pretty steep.

They're actually sitting in the Upper Level box seats.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:27 AM

Pelfrey's retired his first six batters.

No sign of the "softball girls" yet.

AG/DC
May 15 2008 11:36 AM

Beltran's got a diving basket catch to his credit already.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:38 AM

And Wright adds a nice leaping grab of a line drive.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:46 AM

Ed Kranepool will put on the headphones for the bottom of the third.

I hope he gets through his visit without suing anybody.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:50 AM

Kranepool thinks he was still with the Mets in 1980.

It's strange that I know more about his tenure than he does.

metsguyinmichigan
May 15 2008 11:50 AM

Big Pelf got out of that jam. Did he really ditch the mouthpiece?

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:51 AM

This is his second start without the mouthpiece.

What was the story on that thing? My guess is they were afraid he'd bite off his tongue.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:57 AM

Kranepool wants to get on the steroids so he can resume his career.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 11:59 AM

He's pitched four innings, and Pelfrey has a no-hitter going.

Yeah it's to protect his tongue , they were afraid he would trip over it when he finished his wind up and went into his follow through.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:02 PM

Ed says he gave up his number 21 to Warren Spahn and didn't get any compensation from Spahn for it.

Switched to 7 because the Mets were giving infielders the low numbers, and Ed picked 7 because he was a Mickey Mantle fan.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:04 PM

Ed: "Although I had some problems with Duke 'Schneider' he was helpful to me..."

No follow-up question on what those problems might have been.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:09 PM

Gary mentions the no-hitter on the air, and Keith says, "You just shot the clown!"

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:14 PM

Weird.

]The one Spring Training matter that carried into the season was the mouthpiece. Pelfrey had begun using it in college as a means of camouflaging his pitchers. He had been tipping his pitches by sticking out his tongue. The mouthpiece stopped that until this spring, when teammates told him he was tipping his pitches by chewing the mouthpiece on fastballs, but not breaking balls.

You probably don't want him thinking about his tongue when he's pitching!

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:16 PM

The injury to the clown isn't mortal, as Pelfrey gets through five and is now more than half-way to his no-hitter.

Mets need to get a run or two for him.

(I don't post on other boards, but if I did I'd mention there, but not here, that the best way to win a game is to score more runs than your opponent. I hope that doesn't make me sound pessimistic.)

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:17 PM

I don't usually participate in IGT's, and I guess that's a good thing, because when I'm here everyone else stays mostly silent!

Art Shamsky has the headphone on and is chatting with the guys.

Rob Mackowiak. Sounds like an "I'm gonna break up a Met no-no" name.

Benjamin Grimm

Leadoff single for Marlon Anderson.

Hopefully Pelfrey bunts him over successfully and sets up that run that he'll need.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:21 PM

I don't think I would have recognized Art Shamsky if he bit me on the ankle. (And he better not!)

He tells a story about pinch-hitting for Frank Robinson in Cincinnati as Pelfrey takes a third strike.

Course it would be the Mets luck to finally get a no-hitter, but end up losing the game, which MLB has decreeded aren't official no-hitters.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 12:36 PM

I have to say, I've grown to like that the Mets have never had a no-hitter. I am rooting for this to happen, but I think the first Mets no-hitter, if it ever happens, should be quirky or weird in some way.

Beltran and Church are out. Delgado batting in the sixth.

You just know that had he taken the no-no to the ninth, Willie would have pulled him for Heilmann ("Pitch counts, fellas. Pitch counts. He was up around 104 pitches.") The Heilman would have walked three people and given up a grannie to Lastings, who would have taken a pom-pom from the first-base coach to shake as he rounded the bases, then high-five everyone in his own dugout as he rounded third.

Just saw it coming.

Did Alomar waive him over?

bmfc1
May 15 2008 01:15 PM

Howie & Wayne give praise to Guzman for getting the throw... but don't question the merits of the attempt. Between Castillo's lack of hustle on the dropped fly and Reyes' risky try, the Mets may lose this game because of baserunning.

What's t his about Castillo's lack of hustle?

AG/DC
May 15 2008 01:20 PM

Earlier in the game.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 01:20 PM

Early in the game he was on first with two out and Wright flied out to right field. The outfielder dropped the ball and Castillo, had he been running hard, would have scored.

It did take an extraordinary play to get Reyes out. And he did hesitate at second before deciding to make the dash. (I don't know what Alomar's role in this was, if anything. It did look like Reyes was looking to third, rather than to first, before he dashed to third.)

Keith was tsk-tsking the decision.

bmfc1
May 15 2008 01:20 PM

Earlier in the game, with 2 out, Castillo was on 1st and Wright hit a lazy fly ball to RF. It hung up for awhile, then Kearns dropped it. Castillo was shown trotting toward first and only started running as he approached third. DW didn't run either and only ended up on first. Beltran lined out to end in the inning.

Frayed Knot
May 15 2008 01:23 PM

A runner has got to be on his own on that play as it's all in front of him.

That dash to the (briefly) unoccupied 3rd base is the same one that got Jeter's shoulder fucked up a couple years back as he, the ball, and the catcher doing the emergency coverage all arrived at the same time.

Benjamin Grimm
May 15 2008 01:23 PM

Nats continue in the Expo tradition of being a thorn in the Mets side.

Mets now at 20 - 19 , 4 - 6 in the last 10 games , they've been a .500 team for far too long now .

I do have to wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Willie.

What happens this weekend could be pivotal for him, although not necessarily for the team.

If they win two or three in the Bronx, I think the vultures will back off for a bit.

If they lose all three (I'm gagging as I type this) I think the calls for his head might grow too loud to be ignored.

FAN reporting that Wagner took some shots at his teammates after the game. Something to the effect of "I didn't play, ask the guys who played. Oh, they're not at their lockers are they?"

I can see why Wagner has been beloved everywhere he's gone.

The press goes to Wagner because they want him to say something inflammatory. He should have said "no comment." Or, "we gave it a good try, the boys tried hard, we'll get 'em next time." What he said was his version of "no comment."

From Adam Rubin's blog:

Wagner rips teammates for ducking media

That undercurrent of discontent over some Mets ducking the media boiled over after the game. As reporters spoke with Billy Wagner after the loss, first about the Yankees series, then about today’s game, Wagner wondered aloud why the closer was drawing attention.

Then he went Paul Lo Duca-esque, minus the racial component.

He looked over toward the area of Carlos Delgado’s locker and blurted: “Someone tell me why the (expletive) you’re talking to the closer. I didn’t even play. They’re over there, not being interviewed. … I got it. They’re gone. (Expletive) shocker.”

Good name for a band: Expletive Shocker.

Somebody set up a blog for Billy Wagner.

Wagner talks like a guy with way too much job security.

At the very base of it, I don't really care whether Delgado talks to the press or not after the game. I just don't. Sure I'd prefer we had guys who the press all loved and stuff but just as Wagner's guaranteed $$ and no-trade clause makes him brave enough to say whatever he wants the same applies to guys who choose not to talk.

Rubin today wrote about how the writers were mad that Santana told them all no interviews the other day but was chatting up a spanish-language press; ans also, when he did talk, he lied about whether he knew he'd be startinbg in the MFY series.

I hate to suggest this but when every game has pre and post game TV coverage, there's 2 weekly magazine shows and there's an official house organ on the Internet providing news and highlights, how much more do quotes about the game delivered in the newspapers matter? Not much.

Shame the Mets lost today. Watching replay, I enjoyed the visit by Eddie and
Art to the upper deck outside broadcast perch. Howie too.

Feel bad for Pelfster.

Funny line when Howie said something about bringing his first date to Shea
and Keith chimes in, "when was that five years ago?"

As for Wags, shut the fuck up, and keep up the good year you've had so far.

I didn't see last night's ending.

Shouldn/t Beltran be planted near the bag?

With the infield in, he's got to see the ball through in order to score, right?

Beltran claims on that play he will always be running , I don't know , it was all so sudden , bam the game is over.
