Delgado Will Retire After 2008 (according to a confidant)

I have it on good authority that this is Carlos Delgado's last year playing professional baseball.

My uncle's brother-in-law, the architect that built Delgado's house in Miami (on the same block as where my uncle lives), whom Delgado considers a friend, has told my uncle and my grandfather that Carlos has personally told him that as far he's concerned, this is his last year playing baseball, and that he'll retire after this season.

I know this guy, I've been with him many times over the years, as my family is close with my uncle's in-laws. If he says Carlos Delgado told him this, I believe him.

(OE: All right, all right, I changed the title. Jeez.)

Valadius putting it on the line!

We'll be sure to remind you of this next April if you're wrong!

Feel free. If I'm wrong, I'll kick my uncle-in-law (or whatever the hell he is)'s ass the next time we play golf.

FWIW, Carlos himself is saying just the opposite.

Please alter thread title to add "says distant relative"

We need a thread like this, place gets stuffy sometimes.

I hope this gets legs and no one can figure where it originated. Valadius better
hope that too else his uncle's brother-in-law is gonna be pissed.

I think I know a place that will go bananas if they've heard this! Though they'd wish Delgado would just pull a Mike Schmidt and retire NOW!

Heard what?

About what?

You said you know a place that would go bananas if they heard this.

Heard what?

If you're talking about another forum ... please don't. Especially forums where
you're not exactly the most popular poster.

Oh, don't sweat I was just having fun here, I wouldn't.

Does that mean the Mets save $4 million on his buyout? Goodie.

Jeets: >>>Oh, don't sweat I was just having fun here, I wouldn't<<<

I think you misunderstand me, I mean DON'T TALK ABOUT OTHER FORUMS.

Which would be great because we've got so many other 1st base options just sitting around.

Steve isn't speaking for himself.

For once I'm clear on that.

Still waiting on that retirement announcement.

My guess? He changed his mind.

Go kick your uncle.

And punch him in the neck and...

Oh, never mind.

There would be one way to see if Carlos meant it or not - if he finishes the 2009 season with 30 home runs, giving him 499 for his career - and he doesn't come back to try to get number 500.
Then we would see where he falls on the scale that goes left-to-right from "I have my principles" to "How much you payin' me?"
I'd bet he is on the left side of that scale.

Delgado's always struck me as a classy guy. He signed a ball for my grandfather's 85th birthday 3 1/2 years ago.

I would be pretty pissed if he announced his retirement now, after Teixeira signed with the Yankees...

What he does after 2009 can't validate what he allegedly said about retiring after 2008.

Val have you ever been right about anything ever?

Nymr - <i>"umm... he's a Mets fan."</i>

That just proves he's smart, it doesn't necessarily make him right very often regarding other things.

It's not about being right, it's about having inside information and being adamant about it.

Centerfield
Jan 06 2009 12:27 PM

Exactly. If you are going to pull the "I know more than you" act, insist that something will happen because of inside information, there are only two things you can end up being:

1. Right

2. A tool

If #2 happens, take it like a man and admit you were wrong. Backpedaling and excuse making turns you into an even bigger tool.

Who says I made any excuses? Obviously he changed his mind. So would I, after having the kind of second half he had last year.

Benjamin Grimm

It's not "obvious that he changed his mind." You're overlooking the other possibility: That you were wrong.

Yeah but we probably would have heard about it by know, most likely around the time the Mets exercised the option. I mean who knows, we still may hear about it, but you'd think there would be a story saying "Delgado almost did the Mets a favor."

Then again, there was nothing anywhere, all year long that suggested that he'd do the Mets a favor and retire, even with his first half.
