After beating the (heh) Yankees, 2-1, last night, the Tampa Day Devil Rays sit atop the American League East by a half game over Boston.

After losing a second straight game to Cincinnati, 5-3, last night, the Florida Marlins remain atop the National League East by a game and a half game over Philadelphia.

I'd make a dumb crack about Florida not just being for college football anymore, but it's not like the Marlins haven't rebuilt themselves and re-asserted themselves quickly after a fire sale before.

The two-time world champion Marlins have never, to my recollection, spent quality time in first place in their checkered history.

Now there's a fact to make Bob Costas turn over in his grave.

Who was the NY Post hack who always ragged on Bobby Valentine, despite winning an NL pennant, for never winning a division in his major league managerial career?

That fact must irk that guy as well.

Rays could go 48-75 for the remainder of the season and still finish with their best record ever ... and I don't think they're gonna do that.

Yanqui fans looking at these last two nights are realizing how old they look.
If nothing else they could always count on pasting TB pitching -- until this week when they've been held to 2 runs over 20 innings.
They've also lost their Pettitte and Wang games and are now looking at Mussina & Kennedy against Kazmir & Shields to avoid either a sweep or a 3-1 series loss.

I don't want to ponder that the Yankees may only be just this good, though it would please me, because then I have to deal with the Mets being only just this good.

And, while the Mets have Pedro and El Duque up their sleeves, the Yankees have Alex Rodriguez, and that's an ace card.

Drop the "Devil" from the name, proceed directly to first place.

Hmmm. Maybe we should be the "Devil Mets" for a week, then drop the name. Works better than the Los Mets uniforms....

The Mets at least have provided us with glimpses of how good they could be; but beyond Wang's excellent pitching, there's almost nothing encouraging about the entire Yankee season so far.

As said above they look very old. And that's not really bad luck.

My own obsession over the Yankees, my rooting against them, has really subsided this season. Last year at this time I was jazzed that wouldn;t make it but worried they just might. I'm sort of ambivalent this year because I don;t believe they will.

Rodriguez won't be back for the Mets series , looking at next Tuesday at the earliest , things are bad when they slot Jeter in to hit forth .

Maybe Girardi chose the wrong time to angle for the Yankee job.

He's got to stay focused on establishing and developing those young arms. But Hank has his own ideas. This could be a good sideshow.

I doubt any Florida teams will be in first place come September.

Oh, and the Yankees will hoist the 2008 World Series trophy, blah, blah, blah...

I beg your pardon, but I've been predicting the Yankees will win it all since 2001 and I haven't failed yet.

It was actually Murray Chass of the Times who brought that up at the drop of a two-game Met losing streak (hated Valentine). In an era when Wild Card teams are as eligible as any postseason participant to win the World Series, a division title is like good posture. It's nice to have it, you're not necessarily going to fall over if you don't.

TAMPA, Fla. - Hank Steinbrenner expects his struggling New York Yankees to focus and turn around their season.

"They've got to play smarter and harder," he said Wednesday. "The injuries -- when you're missing Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada, that makes it tough. The injuries make a huge difference. At the same time, you've got to get it done. We still have plenty of good hitters. We need to get the job done."

New York is 19-21, fourth in the AL East following a pair of losses to Tampa Bay, the surprise AL East leader.

"No question, the Rays are a hungry team," said Steinbrenner, the Yankees' co-chairman. "That's what our team has to get back."

When asked if it was time for the players to earn their money, Steinbrenner said "Yes."

Following the four-game series against the Rays, the Yankees host the New York Mets in a three-game series starting Friday. Two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, traded to the Mets after the Yankees cut off talks with the Minnesota Twins, is slated to pitch the Subway Series opener Friday. Santana is 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA.

"To me, it's not any added significance because Santana is pitching. We want to win, it's that simple," Steinbrenner said. "We're both kind of struggling. We just need to win. They just need to win. We just need to keep putting wins in the win column. We've got to start racking up some runs."

Steinbrenner will likely watch Friday's game on TV in Florida, but could be at Yankee Stadium over the weekend.

"I think there is a very good chance I might go up there," he said.

Steinbrenner, in his first season overseeing the team's baseball operations, expects the Yankees to put together a hot streak, which has become a trademark in recent years.

"We're going to do everything we can turn to it around this year," Steinbrenner said. "I guarantee we'll get his thing straight next year."

Rodriguez hasn't played since April 28 because of a strained right quadriceps and hopes to return Tuesday. Posada hasn't been able to catch for most of the season because of a right shoulder injury and won't be back until June at the earliest. Both took batting practice at the Yankees' minor league complex Wednesday.

"There's no question, when we get 100 percent healthy, we'll start hitting," Steinbrenner said. "The players, the hand they were dealt, that makes it tougher for the other hitters."

Rodriguez said it's tough not being able to contribute to the Yankees' offense, which has been sluggish.

"It's frustrating," Rodriguez said. "It's hard to watch. All I can do is cheer. I have all the confidence in the world that we're going to start scoring some runs."

Rodriguez is expected to run the bases for the first time Thursday, a key step in his rehab program. He will work out with the team before the game against the Rays so Yankees manager Joe Girardi can watch the session.

"Joe wants to see me run the bases," said Rodriguez, who could play in minor league games in Florida this weekend.

Rodriguez took 89 swings in batting practice, fielded 24 grounders and continued a running program in the outfield Wednesday at the Yankees' minor league complex.

Whoever asked that is a natural-born pot-stirrer. Or a Steinbrenner plant.

Attendance in both Florida franchises seems to be inversely proportional to team performance. The Yanks/ Rays game drew under 15,000 fans the other night.
