About Featured Archives

I wasn't around when the Featured Archives was started on the old Crane Pool, but when I took over archiving I looked for a few things in a thread to make it a featured archive:

* Long threads - Obviously a topic that engenders a lot of responses is probably something of interest. Length alone does insure Featured Archives status though. For example, some long threads may just be two CPF'ers having a lengthy and dull debate over some sabermetrics that interest no one else. Which brings me to my next criterion.

*Diverse participation - Threads in which a great number of CPF members participate in are often great threads since obviously they interested a diverse group of people. Again, a long thread with a lot of members participating is not a guarantee for the Featured Archives, but a good place to look for one.

*Great writing - Going back to when I first started participating in Metsonline back in 1997 I've been amazed by the insightful, illuminating, and downright funny writing Mets fans post online. The Featured Archives is definitely the place to highlight great writing.

*Crane Pool Culture - These are the threads that help define us as a group. For example, threads where terms like "assclown" and "caustic fucktard" are used for the first time, or the originating thread of one of the many great debates on the CPF.

In my mind, the Featured Archive should be the creme da le creme of the Crane Pool, and we are better served by having it be highly selective so the truly great threads aren't lost among the thousands of threads we produce (in fact, if I were in charge I would only save the Featured Archive and chuck the rest, but I digress). That being said I'd be happy to hear what other members have in mind for the Featured Archives. Furthermore, if there's a thread that you think belongs in the Featured Archive, please post a link or the thread title here in this thread.

Great standards.

Also --- and this is hard now that posts aren't numbered --- a featured archive could feature a debut by a future award-winning contributor. That sort of falls under "Crane Pool Culture," though.

I think you have established a good criteria with which to select threads for archiving as "Featured Threads". I have always viewed the featured archives to represent the best of the CPF. Though opinions may vary somewhat as to what constitutes a worthy thread, I believe your guidelines should be extremely helpful.

Too bad CF's exploits in Latvia were on the old CPF, for it has become legendary post now. One of the classic posts of all time.

I think you meant to say does not here.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I thought this was Squid's job, though. Where is the Squid?
