Interesting situation where Philly and Washington play 2 today. A sweep for either club evens us up with one of them in the L column and if its Washington losing, we can put them in the rearview ourselves this weekend. OTOH, perhaps we should root for a Washington sweep since what happens to Philly from here is out of our hands till we play them again at the end of this month, they're the WC leader. Either way, it's nice they play 2 in one day before coming here. Regardless of the outcome I hope they both get their bullpens shredded going into the weekend. What do you do today?

When in doubt, root for a split. Since the Mets have to catch both clubs, I figure it's better if neither one wins two. The benefit from one team losing two would be offset by the other team's winning two.

The thing is, in a fray like this once you catch a team, they become an advocate instead of an enemy, helping you pick off the teams ahead of you... until they catch you again. Then they stink. So root against Florida. In the case of two teams above you --- in two races --- playing each other, I guess you root for the team further down in the standings. So root for Washington. Then if they win game one, switch to Philadelphia for game two.

I'm rooting for Washington to sweep today. The Phillies are more dangerous, IMO, and represent more of a threat to us. More than anything, though, I'd like to see us beat the bejesus out of Duke today. Young schmung. Pound the shit out of him and make him wish he could be back in AA.

Rotblatt's Weekend Rooting Hierarchy: The Perfect Storm This weekend could be amazing for Mets lovers and Yankee haters alike. Cleveland, Toronto, Boston & Oakland are all playing against non-contenders, and sweeps by them can put serious pressure on the Yankees. Similarly, our division & WC rivals are playing non-contenders, meaning that we don't have to worry about messy "Do I root for the Phillies or Nats?" situations. It's an unabashed, balls-out root fest for us this weekend! And without further ado, my picks for the weekend: Mets over Nats Brewers over Houston Pittsburgh over Phillies Dodgers over Marlins San Diego over Atlanta White Sox over Yankees Boston over LA Oakland over KC Cleveland over Baltimore MN over Seattle Toronto over Detroit If, miraculously, all this happens, the Mets would be 4.5 games out of first place in the division and sitting atop the wild card slot with a .5 lead over Houston & the Phillies. Meanwhile, Oakland would be 4.5 games ahead of the Yankees in the WC race & Boston would be 7.5 games ahead of them--and even more ignomiously, Toronto would have a half-game lead over them in the division standings. Dare to dream, fellow Mets fans!

Yeah I'm with you, it annoys me because Fran says it so matter of factly, I'm sure a case could be made for top five ever just as a case can be made against top five.

Here's the problem as I see it. While the NL East teams are beating the hell out of each other, Houston will be playing Chicago, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Cincy.

We need to add the Angels to the list of teams we root for. If Oakland continues to win as much as we'd like them to, they could pass the Angels and move into first place. And if that happens, we'll be looking to Anaheim (as well as Cleveland) to keep the Yankees from winning the wild card.

Good point about the Angels. And for my money, Petey probably had the most dominant 7-year stretch ever between 1997 & 2003 (even with his half year in 2001), but if you're talking longevity, Clemens has got to be up there. He has averaged an ERA+ of 141 over 21 seasons, after all, and he's only had two seasons where he's been worse than average--his first and his fifteenth. Of course, after his rampant steroid use comes out into the Clear (nyuck, nyuck), that remarkable durability of his will be placed in its appropriate context, and the world will know what we long have--that Clemens is a cheating asshat cheater.
