Graves sins were the walks. Neither hit was anything, Reyes's E was laziness and Diaz is a real big liability in RF. Just based on the innings I've seen that's at least 5 balls he's missed or misplayed since his recall that Cameron catches w/o mussing his hair (well, if he had hair).

Oddly, by "allowing" the Nats to close the gap we're forcing them to use their pen (ours also) faster than they would have had the game stayed a rout.
Normally that's a bad tradeoff although tomorrow's starter failed Yanqui scum Esteban Loazia is starting on short rest and Washington's long reliever (John Halama) was used today.

im all concerned about the rotation situation, but the real thing that needs to be addressed is that dang bullpen. They had it together for a bit of a stretch there, pre AS break, but ever since Graves got here the whole shebang has SUCKED.
Cept Hernandez, and he's like 102 yrs old.

Omar really should have addressed this b4 the trade deadline, but then, as he was sayin, no one was becoming available.

Koo, Graves and Looper should lose something for that travesty.

I just noticed that Martinez only threw 74 pitches.
Now, I know Willie wants to keep him as fresh as possible, but he should have gotten at least one if not two more innings from Pedro. (who knows,he may have gotten thru both innings with 3 pitches each)
I think Pedro might even agree with this, since it cost him a W.
(but who thought they could give 8 runs back to the Nats tonight, right?)
cripes.

Rotblatt
Aug 20 2005 11:37 PM

IMO, the move to pull Petey was fine. The problem was that Graves is on our roser. I pretty much guarantee that Bell wouldn't have sucked that badly.

I realize that that's a pretty easy guarantee to make after the fact, but I suspect most of you will agree with me, so I wont' worry about it too much.

And I don't think Koo or Heilman deserved much blame--Koo especially. He's been very good for us when not injured.

Anyway, thank God we got the win. Let's have a REAL laffer tomorrow.

It'll be very interesting. Graves' real sins were the two walks. They cut loose DeJean because he was unable to throw a strike.

I suspect they're seeing something in his bullpen work that suggests he's got something he's not showing. So, try and slip him into the minors to work with him there, and don't worry too much if he's claimed.

It's certainly what I (and a lot of others) said five or six weeks ago, but now, he'll only have to be a Tide for ten days.

Looper is more interesting, and I suspect we'll see a Heilman-for-Closer movement in the stands before the homestand is up.

Meanwhile, the Mets gain on three of the four teams ahead of them in the division standings, and three of the four teams ahead of them in the comodín standings.

That dont make no sense.

Cool part about tonight: I avoided all this drama. I heard from a friend that the Mets were up 8-0 with Pedro on cruise control. Later on, someone confirmed that the Mets had won and were now within 2 of the wild card.

Bad part: I didn't know about any of this drama until I just went through this thread. This had all the markings of a horror story...glad to see it went well.

Proposal: Anyone who uses the word "laugher", "laffer" or any variation thereof in an IGT gets an immediate lifetime ban. No questions asked.

(We have a Giamatti on this board, he should have some experience with lifetime bans)

Come on----
it was 8-0 with Pedro on the mound at the time.
I almost turned the channel.

And I stepped up and took the blame.

Okay. Ill never laffer again

It wasn't mentioned at all during the IGT at all. . . but does anyone know what Pedro's velocity was tonight? Was he throwin hard or did he look like he needed a rest?

Mid 80s, lots of cutters and two seamers.

I think that foot is still bothering him.

I just rock back and forth knowing that in 11 days we could have Bell and Ring back which means fewer opportunities for Willie to use Graves and Koo.

This was a great IGT. Thank you all so much.

Looper was crap last night; he wasn't even hitting 89 on the WPIX gun, and if he's not throwing harder, he's throwing meatballs. You had to know he was going to give up hits... I was just hoping they would be hit right at someone.

I'll say what I've said all year; I don't trust Diaz at ALL. With his glove, with his bat, with anything.

I think the gun was slow. I mean, Petey blew a few "81" mph fastballs past people and he had a couple 78'er that I'm pretty sure were actual fastballs and not changeups.

Hernandez was slower than I remembered as well.

i was there last night, easily the worst win ever. kaz matsui was given a loud boooo which i think was as much for randolph pulling pedro as it was for him. i really dislike randolph, he doesn't know how to use a pitching staff at all.

Easily the worst win ever?

Seaver is laying it heavy about Pedro coming out after only six innings. The party line is that Pedro didn't feel "right" after the sixth. Seaver will have none of it, saying that the starter's job is to go at least 8 innings. He also mentions that Rick Peterson has been "protective" about Pedro and his early exits.

He also walked uphill in the snow both ways to school every morning.

Which was pretty unusual for Fresno, California <g>

FTR, he didn't say "at least 8." He said "At least 7." He also said "get you to the 8th," whcich may explain the confusion.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 22 2005 11:51 AM

In any event, he certainly felt that six was wimping out.

In any event, Seaver's an ass on the air.

Ass or not, I think he had a point in this case.

Bah, whatever. Petey's going to be on our team for a long, long time, and it's in our best interests to keep him healthy. Coddling him whenever we get the chance is smart, and I'm happy we're doing it.

I just wish we were making more smart choices.

Just as I was turning off the computer last night, the closed captioning typed in something about "Willie Rain Doll."
