Okay, so we already kinda know these guys, because we played 'em last night while I was sleeping on the job. (Actually, I was working on the job, which is why I forgot to do it.)
So here's what we know about the last two games of this series:
The Nats are finishing a two-week, four-city road trip this weekend. Are they tired? Getting memories of being the wandering minstrels of 2004? Perhaps, as the bats looked sleepy last night against 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner Jae Seo.
Some quick thoughts on the Nats: ** Closer Chad Cordero has 39 saves, which leads the NL. ** Jose Guillen has 21 home runs on the season, only one of which has come at home. ** Who is this guy? The Nationals have used 49 players this season, more than any other MLB team.
Tonight: Livan Hernandez (14-5, 3.45) vs Pedro Martinez (12-5, 2.96), which is a great reason to bring your dog to the picnic area for Snausages Dog Day at the Park. Livan is a workhorse's workhorse, as he leads the majors in pitches thrown in '05. He's third in IP and first in hits allowed; expect a nice day of rest for Frank Robinson's bullpen. In his career at Shea, he's 5-3, 3.40. He's 2-1, 3.68 in three starts this year, including giving up five runs in seven innings in a losing effort on July 6 in DC.
Sunday: Esteban Loaiza (7-9, 3.64) vs Kris "Tin" Benson (9-4, 3.49). What better way to celebrate Jewish Heritage Day at Shea! Loaiza gives you the same thing every night out: six innings (all but five of his starts this year), three runs (all but ten of his starts), good control (1-2 walks/game), and a handful of Ks.
Ex-Mets: IF Carlos Baerga C Gary Bennett OF Preston Wilson (kinda) RP Hector Carrasco (drafted by the Mets in '88) RP Mike Stanton
Ex-Pos: OF Cliff Floyd
