What do you think?
|
cooby Aug 18 2005 02:56 PM |
For crying out loud! Don't try to catch it barehanded (I read that wrong at first, btw!)
|
MFS62 Aug 18 2005 02:58 PM |
Of course its ok to wear a glove. You don't want to look like a schmuck if you muff an easy one in full view of a national viewing audience.
|
Elster88 Aug 18 2005 02:59 PM |
I'll agree with that.

When you sit in the type of seats I usually end up in, a glove looks pretty ridiculous, but I don't see why not.
|
ScarletKnight41 Aug 18 2005 03:22 PM |
Bring the glove. Play catch before the game with some kids. And if you're sitting in an area where foul balls may be hit, wear it and keep an eye out for potential web gem moments (in other words, hold a beer in your other hand and don't spill anything while making the catch <g>).

The last thing I want to do during a game is wear a glove. Interferes with the beer drinking, the score keeping, the fingered repositioning of outfielders. Kids can wear gloves, however. Provided they are in good seats.

Hell no. If you're an adult, you can afford the $5 (or so) that a ball costs. As much as we hate it, childhood does end.
|
TheOldMole Aug 18 2005 03:41 PM |
I voted three. Leave the gloves to the kids. Foul balls are more important to them, or should be.
|
sharpie Aug 18 2005 03:41 PM |
If you do happen to catch a ball, give it to a kid f'chrissake.
|
ScarletKnight41 Aug 18 2005 03:42 PM |
I actually think of having the glove as protecting the people around you.

Replace "High School" with "8th grade", and there you go.
|
Benjamin Grimm Aug 18 2005 05:12 PM |
I voted High School, but I was thinking "Fifth Grade."
|

I have to admit I usually still cart my glove along.
|
Nymr83 Aug 18 2005 07:29 PM |
My feeling is once you can have a beer in your hand you shouldn't have a glove on your hand.
|
Vic Sage Aug 19 2005 12:00 PM |
the only reason i don't bring my glove is my own self-consciousness.
|
Frayed Knot Aug 19 2005 12:02 PM |
I think that in certain seats bringing a glove should be almost mandatory.

Yup.

Will there be a poll on whether it's appropriate to use 1 glove to masturbate? Catching a foul ball could never be like bedding a starlet, as bedding a starlet means that you're actively part of the game. In fact, you're the star. In catching a foul ball, you're merely getting something the actual players are throwing away, anyway. Sloppy seconds, if you will. In catching a foul ball, you are a free rider. In bedding the starlet, you are the rider.

Bingo. Although this one doesn't bother me quite as much as the morons who insist on doing the wave when the team is leading by fewer than 10 runs.

Here's one thing for which I'm grateful:

That's just because the Mets bullpen at Shea is in fair territory. Otherwise, David Cone would fit. But, alas, the glove don't fit, so we must acquit.

Thank you, Vic. I was beginning to think I was the only person who felt that way; I was afraid to post. But I got your back now.

I saw this happen once, at Fenway, when I was a kid. Not the kid that it happened to. But it was scary nonetheless.

I feel about the wave the way that cooby feels about people who call her up to remind her about her doctor appointments.
|
Willets Point Aug 19 2005 01:31 PM |
People would stop starting the wave if the rest of us stopped participating. I call for an anti-wave sit-in!
|
ScarletKnight41 Aug 19 2005 01:36 PM |
I haven't stood for the wave in years, and I actively mock those who do.

I still can't believe that happened 15 freaking minutes after I typed that

I hate the Wave. Hate it with the passion of a thousand fires. But try as you might, unless you buy out a whole section, you can't stop it, because there are kids (and, incredibly, adults) in every section who think standing up and whoooing like morons is a great idea. Then, when someone who was too busy whoooing with their arms in the air gets smacked in the head by a foul line drive, I'm supposed to think it's some kind of tragedy. Sorry, but no.

And thus this thread comes full circle.
|
ScarletKnight41 Aug 19 2005 01:55 PM |
I can live with kids doing the wave. I can also live with kids who get into the bogus animated scoreboard races between innings.
|
seawolf17 Aug 19 2005 02:00 PM |
Animated scoreboard races are fine, because those don't happen while action is going on. Whoop all you want, act like a moron trying to get an intern to throw you a T-shirt, whatever. But once the ball's in play, it's game on.

Fortunately, the latter has now disappeared from Shea. The "guess which hat the ball is under" still lives on.
|
ScarletKnight41 Aug 19 2005 02:09 PM |
I meant it generically. Guess the hat is almost as banal (I'll give some credit to people who are really good at tracking where the ball is).
|

i have been trying to catch a foul ball for decades. i almost got one at keyspan park this year but it was hit so hard i couldn't quite get to it in time and it blazed past me and hit the guys behind me. it was actually slightly scary, line drive coming right at us at a zillion miles an hour with some movement. i would like a shot at a popup.

Amen. I am actually thinking of writing a complaint letter. At least twice during the game tonight there was a "Do the Wave" graphic on the Diamondvision. DURING AN INNING!!! I couldn't believe it.
