This is really sad. My heart goes out to his family and the whole 49ers organization.

I was just talking to a friend this morning about how reckless NFL training camp seemed (like I know), and that they should do the opposite of MLB and go up to Quebec and Nova Scotia for camp.

Actually in this case heat probably wasn't the problem. It was relatively cool when he died.

The autopsy proved inconclusive. And it couldn't have been the heat- it was in the mid-60's in Denver. His weight might have been a contributing factor- he was rated "severely obese" on the body-mass index (BMI) scale. He was 6'3" and 310 pounds. Toxicology test results come out in 3-6 weeks.

BMI doesn't take into account the body fat % and such, I'm sure every NFL player (maybe not kicker) would fail due to the their steroid-enhanced physique.

To be fair, the NFL has long had much better steroid testing policies and procedures than any other major pro sport in America.

It's been reported that Thomas Herrion died of ischemic heart disease.

What's that?

Ischemia is the term used to describe insufficient blood supply within a tissue. Ischemic heart disease woud be when there is insufficient blood flow to the heart (particularly the myocardium) that generally occurs as a result of coronary artery disease.
