Thanks for the line up, but I think you have an error in the Yankee line up. I think the first baseman is actually Thong Giambi.

Very nice morning today, really rainy and windy this afternoon and actually nice again now, though chilly.

I woke up at 4:30 this morning. Seen it all.

The Yankees' roster has been kind of looking like a hockey team's recently, keeping Duncan and Farnsworth aboard in case they need a bully.

Don't be nervous when they have Giambi hitting fifth.

Jeter throws out Wright on a soft groundball and Morgan and Miller get chapped lips kissing Capt. Intangibles ass. Granted his third baseman did miss the ball cutting acrtoss in front of Jeter, but it definitely wasn't a play worthy of effusive praise.

Elster88
May 18 2008 06:22 PM

I'd love to switch to radio.

KC
May 18 2008 06:24 PM

They must have said Jeter at least 60 times and it's only 1 2/3's in.

Really liked that exchange between Miller and Morgan regarding the pick by Giambi on the Cano throw, Joe made me laugh.

bmfc1
May 18 2008 06:33 PM

I saw a dopey Old Spice commercial today where a guy is playing softball and he goes into a head first slide from second to home. It made me think of Jeter's slide yesterday--except that the guy in the commercial actually touched the base.

From firejoemorgan.com:

Kurt (NYC): What are your overall thoughts on the Mets this season?

Joe Morgan: I've been asking myself the same question.

You've been asking yourself what your own thoughts are on the Mets this season?

They can't come up with any consistency.

I would like someone who knows how to do such things to go through every one of Joe's chats since he started chatting and find out how many times he has used the word "consistent" or any of its noun/verb/adj./adv. forms. My guess: the highest number calculable by machines.

They can look like the best or worst team in the majors. That has marked them this year and at the end of last year. Their players are not producing together. I don't know how good they can be, if they can be the team that I picked to win this year. They're an enigma.

Perfect Morganian anti-analysis. I dunno. Something's wrong. "Their players aren't producing together." I don't know how good they can be. Huh. Weird. Geez. Gosh. Heavens to murgatroid. (Shrugs.)

I will now answer this question without looking anything up.

I think the Mets are underperforming because Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado are underperforming, though I think Beltran's OPS is actually pretty good, like low-800's. They're being carried by Ryan Church, which is nice, but probably not the recipe for success that Minaya had in mind. Their starters are fine -- Santana is Santana, and will only get better as he adjusts to the NL parks. Pelfrey and Perez are serviceable-to-good, and Maine is having an excellent year so far. Wagner is still lights-out. So, with a solid pitching staff and a decent pen, you'd expect them to speed up their winning ways over the next few months, because you assume that those good hitters will anti-regress to their means -- if I remember correctly, PECOTA had them at like 92 wins with a +100 run differential.

Delgado might be done, but Reyes and Beltran will heat up. And they'll be fine.

Zvon
May 18 2008 07:32 PM

Interesting thing, that space between the line on the wall and the foul pole, but they should take into consideration the angle both are from the plate.

Also the fact that the fair side of the white line should line up with the foul side of the foul pole?

Regardless, you're giving them too much credit expecting them to take the angle into consideration.

Mets catch the second-place Phils, sitting a game out, after Philadelphia has nothing to show for themselves afer losing a 5:37 rainslogger to Toronto.

I started this thread meaning to put in my pre-game thoughts but was running late for the game and missed them. Ooops.

Anyway, they were that I think this game was set up to be a win because 1. Perez is a big-game pitcher and is more likely to concentrate and focus when the pressure is on. 2. The Yankees suck against lefties.

Had a fantastic game. I can actually report that there are Yankee fans who are real baseball fans, are polite, civil and friendly. (Yes, all 4 of them).

Bob Davidson is a tool. You make a bad call, you get to hear it from the dugout for an inning, and go over between innings and tell them to cool it. He had no business taking off the mask and walking over to the Mets dugout. Good on Jerry for not taking his shit.

I'm sure that satisfies MLB and that there will be no repercussions, such as his not ump'ing the All-Star Game or the playoffs. Delgado misses a homerun and 2 RBI when he will be seeking a new contract. And my fantasy team misses the same stats as well--if I finish out of the money because of one homerun and/or two RBI, I will send a bill to Bob Davidson.

It's not the mistake per se - blow calls happen. I'm pissed off over the procedural issues. For a change, Joe Morgan was absolutely right about something - an umpire should never overcall another ump's decision unless he clearly saw that it was wrong. Obviously, none of these bozos were able to see where the ball hit, so they had no business at all overturning the third base umpire's call.

It's not a question of whether the call was right or wrong. It's a question that they had no business disturbing the initial decision. And for that, they should be disciplined.

This is a good point, TMF. Why did an ump farther from the ball overrule the call?

Because Captain Intangibles protested.

This is why these guys should be disciplined - they took a biased player's word for it on a call that they didn't see for themselves.

Well, in this regard, I go back to Reilly as crew chief. If an inferior questions your judgment, you'd better hear his case carefully, look him in the eye, and be certain he or she more informatoin than you. Any doubt at all, and Reilly's got to go with himself as the man whose call it is, the man in position, and the chief. He yielded to his colleagues' lesser judgment in a matter of seconds.

You should see what Somers looked like when he started at FAN 20 years ago before he lost a lot of weight. I'll see if I can find any on line.

Evan Roberts also played Elliot, one of Stern's childhood friends in Private Parts the movie.

Now, on to the Met portion of my post: did anyone, anywhere, offer any explanation on why that small portion of the foul pole was painted black?

I thought that was tape. A sloppy repair job.

I guess Willie could've protested based on the condition of the "field." If it could be argued that the pole didn't meet big-league standards, he might've had a case.
