Shouldn't Castro face Glavine and Schneider get the righty in the nightcap?

Gwreck
May 20 2008 10:04 AM

One would think, although perhaps it's Maine-Schneider familiarity?

seawolf17
May 20 2008 10:07 AM

Schneider is 10-for-37 career off Glavine... maybe that's a factor? Castro only has four ABs off him.

metirish
May 20 2008 10:08 AM

I have a gut feeling that Willie had a gut feeling on that call.

Is Larry still hitting over .400?

seawolf17
May 20 2008 10:08 AM

FWIW, Castillo and Alou both have great career numbers against him.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 10:10 AM

If the Mets beat Glavine today, will that be seen as proof that Glavine is really a Met at heart?

AG/DC
May 20 2008 10:10 AM

A lefty without a breaking pitch? I'm not surprised to hear that Alou has battered him.

Proof that the Mets have good hitters or that Glavine sucks, at the very least.

I think maybe it would have been a good game to sit Church, and get Easley in right.

Not a bad idea , Easley had a rough time of it playing second last time out.

Black caps and jerseys again today.

Take that Johnny Lunchbucket.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:13 AM

It's like seeing Bud Harrelson hit a home run!

metirish
May 20 2008 11:16 AM

Out of the infield?

G-Fafif
May 20 2008 11:18 AM

Glavine must have thought he was still a Met and pictured Castillo as a Marlin.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:20 AM

Single by Wright, walk to Beltran, single by Church.

Bases loaded for Alou with one out.

Gwreck
May 20 2008 11:20 AM

Would like to see Alou's first homer of the year right now as well.

Rockin' Doc
May 20 2008 11:21 AM

I need to work on my reading comprehension. I could have sworn that Ben Grimm intimated that Castillo hit a home run.

Maybe I'll buy a lottery ticket on the way back to the office this afternoon.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:21 AM

Alou hits a hard line drive right at Chipper.

It's up to Delgado now.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:22 AM

Deep fly to right, but caught short of the warning track.

End of inning, 1-0 Mets.

G-Fafif
May 20 2008 11:22 AM

I knew the Mets should have dressed as Marlins.

Gwreck
May 20 2008 11:23 AM

Still about 5 runs short of what I was hoping for this inning.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:26 AM

Escobar leads off with a double.

Quickly ends any fear of getting a no-hitter.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:26 AM

Nice heads-up play by Reyes.

He gets a ground ball, Escobar heads for third, Reyes throws to Wright instead of to Delgado and gets the out.

G-Fafif
May 20 2008 11:27 AM

Nice play...nice play, nice play, nice play...nice play...nice play.

Bizarre to think Jose and David have never faced Glavine. He was a Met a long time.

metsguyinmichigan
May 20 2008 11:30 AM

I'm not sad Glavine left. I didn't hate on him when he was here, but I'm not lamenting that he's no longer with us.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 11:31 AM

Same here.

Meanwhile, Teixiera singles home the tying run with two out.

Can I just interject a conversation I had with Johnny Lunchpail Jr. yesterday.

JCL: Who is on the Mets?
JLJ: Daybidrye.

JCL: What number?
JLJ: Five!

JCL: Who else is on the Mets?
JLJ: Jose Jose

JCL: What number is Jose Jose?

Oh, he's 2. NOW I'm impressed. I thought he was in high school.

(Sadly, my own high-schooler might not be able to name that many Mets. There are times I fear I have failed as a parent. I'll quiz him tonight and see. We're going to see "Sapmalot")

I had to pop in and comment on the miracle that was Luis Castillo hitting a home run.

Benjamin Grimm

Braves take the lead on a series of singles in the third.

Maine's throwing a lot of pitches today. Doesn't look like he'll go too deep into the game.

Was there any chance Wright could have scored on Churchie's hit?

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:11 PM

Maybe. It would have been close, though. The ball was hit hard and scooped up pretty quickly.

Had he gotten the green light and been thrown out, we'd be obsessing over Alomar's recklessness.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:14 PM

Ron Darling reveals that Barry Lyons' nickname was "Mattress Head."

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:14 PM

How that came up:

1. Talking about Glavine's first years with the Mets.
2. Led to talk about Art Howe.
3. Comment that Howe had a "Barry Lyons hairline."

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:17 PM

Glavine's coasting now. He's retired eleven in a row.

Centerfield
May 20 2008 12:20 PM

I think the only thing that could make this worse is if John Smoltz were sitting on our Disabled List right now.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:21 PM

Maine, meanwhile, throws 70 pitches in the first three innings, and Kelly Johnson leads off the fourth with a double. (Just as Darling is saying that Maine needs a quick easy inning.)

Centerfield
May 20 2008 12:25 PM

Wasn't Maine under Glavine's tutelage while he was here? Maybe he taught him to suck against the Braves.

mario25
May 20 2008 12:27 PM

They cant let this piece of doo-doo Glavine beat them

AG/DC

I don't know how Centerfield ever gave up smoking.

Willets Point

Fman99
May 20 2008 12:28 PM

Mainey doesn't have his good stuff today methinks.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:29 PM

Well, now it's 3-1.

The problem is that Maine is struggling and Glavine is sailing along.

Both of these need to turn around if the Mets are to win this game.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 20 2008 12:30 PM

We will win.

Willets Point
May 20 2008 12:30 PM

See, Glavine was just holding back his best stuff until he returned to his true team.

AG/DC
May 20 2008 12:30 PM

Can't ask anybody to win if we can't back him with more than an unlikely solo homer by Castillo.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
May 20 2008 12:33 PM

Yeah and we can't win convinced that 2 runs is too many to overcome.

Centerfield
May 20 2008 12:33 PM

The strike zone in Gamecast suggests that Glavine is getting the call off the corner again.

Benjamin Grimm

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote:

I haven't said that they CAN'T win. Just that they need to reverse two trends in order for that to happen.

Keith: It's "ominous" when you get a chance to knock out a great pitcher in the first inning and you don't do it.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:37 PM

And now it's 14 in a row for Glavine.

And Maine has thrown 91 pitches through four innings.

It looks like the bullpen will be getting three or four innings today. Not ideal in the first game of a doubleheader.

I want to see Maine get a quick fifth so he can take the mound for the sixth.

It's more ominous when they retired a dozen guys in a row and rack up the baserunners in the interim.

And he starts with a walk.

Schoeneweis is up and throwing.

And now an infield hit to Teixiera.

metsguyinmichigan
May 20 2008 12:40 PM

What are you all worried about? If history tells us anything, it's that Glavine can't pitch beyond the sixth inning of any game -- or bad things happen. I'm sure our guys are licking their chops to get at that backdraft bullpen the Braves have. And ours is pretty well rested after the rainout, day off and strong starting against the vile Skanks.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 12:41 PM

And Maine is out of the game, none out and two on in the fifth.

No Schaefer for Mr. Vacationland today.

Fman99

Tom Glavine needs to be punched in the neck. And his wife is a cunt.

She pissed me off last year in Milwaukee... in that game that Glavine was trying to get #300 and the Mets pen blew the lead. It was still a tie game, and still hope for Mets fans, and she's sitting in the crowd like someone pooed on her shoe. Fuck her.

OK I feel better now.

Tom Seaver would start crying.

Benjamin Grimm
May 20 2008 01:03 PM
