Thoughts on the Game !!!!

(copyright MM enterprises, Inc. - no rights reserved) 1. Pettitte Ks the side in the 1st!! 2. Santana walks the first hitter then gives up a Jeter HR!! 3. Great relays by Church and Castillo to nail Damon at the plate !!!! OK, enough of that 4. All right look, there's two ways to look at the 4th inning: a) we suck cuz we shoulda had more and one more hit breaks that puppy wide open b) we're resourceful cuz got three runs out of an inning where only 1 ball was hit even semi-hard and it's not like we've been doing a whole lot of that lately. 5. Not only did Santana shut the Yanx down after our 3-run inning, but did so on 6 pitches in each of the next two frames - putting Pettitte right back out there after his loooong inning. I would have hated to try and nurse that lead for more than the 4 outs we turned out to need. 6. Even before Reyes's HR you could see he was getting much better looks at Farnsworth. Pettitte must have had some good stuff today because almost no one got good looks off of him. 7. I can't believe Abreu's ball carried out !! 8. Beltran triple off Joba the mutt might have been my favorite AB of the game 9. Bitch at Wagner all you want for "making it interesting", but the two hits he did give up travelled a total of about 200 ft and I think the pieces of the bats went further than that. Plus he faced 4 batters w/the tying run at the plate and got them all with only 1 ball leaving the infield. 10. If one of those meatheads (Duncan or Ensburg) had "run into one" and tied the game up Girardi would have entered extra innings w/no position subs. He only has a 3-man bench these days and the only one not used in the 9th (Molina) would have had to go in to catch.

I liked the fact that not only did Beltran hit a triple off Joba but that the Mets scored off Mr. Unscorable. Take that.

Oh and one more thing; How the fuck is the ump at 2nd calling Jeter safe when he's 4 feet from the bag?!?!? I mean either you make an out call or [u:4766ce26bf]NO[/u:4766ce26bf] call - but not a safe call. We all know Jeter can do things that no one else in MLB history can do, but do we have to make his baselines only 85 feet too?

The idea that a guy is a failure even in his success because he was imperfect is absolutely maddening.

agreed. i wasn't complaining when john franco used to walk the bases loaded and go 3-2 on the next guy only to get out of it. you get the job done or you don't, thats all.

That was just weird , then the ump did a juggle motion like that made a difference ,Jeter was still no where near the bag. When the Castillo relay got to Schneider and he blocked home plate with his foot Gary mentioned during the replay that blocking the plate like that was a lost art, at that moment I turned over to YES to see it they thought it was a good call , they did and Cone made the very same point as Gary.

Can we talk more deeply about the intangible Jeter refuse-to-lose grinding ethic? He makes this ridiculous bush league slide (so much for the magic muscle memory), and then when he comes up short, rather than scrambling to elude the tag, which still hadn't quite been laid on him when his momentum failed him, he lifts himself up on all fours slowly in his futility even as blue is calling him safe.

To me the game turned on the play at the plate. I wonder what kind of heat Girardi is getting for the baserunning on that play, because it was every bit as bad as what the Mets did on Thursday. The team is winning, the opposing pitcher is have trouble getting into a rhythm, two guys are in scoring position, and nobody's out. If you're going to try to score, you'd better make it easily. Having said that, that was GREAT defense from Church, Castillo, and especially Schneider.

When Delgado's homer was stolen and the MFY's immediately scored two in the bottom of the inning, I was convinced that this was going to be one of THOSE games. I'm so glad that it wasn't :)
