Taking the dog out

Got harassed by some rock-throwing punks last night. It's really hard to fight two guys when you have a shih tzu underfoot, so I skedaddled. Tonight I'm bringing a baseball with me. (A bat may be just asking for trouble.) I'll also pocket the missus' cell phone. (Mine got pinched last week with my jacket.)

If I don't log back on in a half hour call the Metro Police.

Did the rock-throwing punks pinch your jacket?

Back in one piece. No blood tonight.

It really blows that you can't even take the dog out without dealing with crap like that.

Yeah, I've had useless dogs before, but this one is kind of sub-replacement level.

When Mookie was about a year old I would walk him in Riverside Park fairly late - maybe 10pm or so.

One time this hood with a pit bull was following me and Mookie was straining against his leash to go back and see the other dog. Me - I just wanted to walk a bit faster to get home.

The guy with the Pitty kept saying 'Yo, let your dog go, let's see what happens....'

I get back to my building finally and tell the doorman about my little misadventure. He told me that he knew that guy, he had been in jail and was not a nice person.

I had a big walking stick that accompanied me on those evening walks after that.

You can never know when the local punk/troublemaker/chucklehead will be out causing mayhem.

But getting shit stolen from you at work is messed up.

That would bother me much more.

The thing is that I went homeshopping this weekend. Probably not a good time to go searching, shortly after getting robbed and menaced. Things are generally pretty cool, and I don't typically make a point of keeping certain hours or not walking X block. It's my city too.

I should pint out that I work with the homeless, and a lot of them have criminal backgrounds, although often petty stuff. I've come to realize eighty percent of these guys have my back when there's trouble. That's great, and it lets me do my work in confidence, but I've also allowed it to make me careless. Tossing my jacket on a table (with keys and a cellphone in the pockets) while I'm mopping up isn't losing my jacket so much as giving it away. At least, that's the attitude I've got to take. It's my city, too, but it's still the city.

Ms. Edgy says if I don't scream at them tonight, she will. She's the baddest around.

How funny. I have a cat named Mookie.

Yeah, oddly enough it seems to be a pattern among Met fans of a certain age to have pets named after him. Go figure.

Don't tell the actual Mookie though. He's not a big fan of the practice.

BASEBALL: NOTEBOOK; The In-Season Finds Are Producing Nicely

By MURRAY CHASS

One Man's Art Is Another's . . .

Stashed away somewhere in the bowels of Shea Stadium is a piece of artwork that the person it celebrates does not appreciate. It's The Moo-kie Baseball Cow, and it has missed out on New York's CowParade because Mookie Wilson couldn't get into the spirit of the city's most unusual summer attraction.

The painted fiberglass cows have been grazing throughout the city, but the Moo-kie cow didn't make it out of the barn because Wilson objected to it.

The work of Janet Braun-Reinitz, a Queens artist who had worked previously with Wilson, now a Mets coach, the cow is painted a vibrant blue and orange with baseballs front and rear and a picture of Mookie on the side. The city parks department placed the cow outside the main entrance to Shea Stadium in June, but it did not stay there long.

Through an oversight by the CowParade people, Wilson was never notified about his namesake's existence. Finding out about the Moo-kie cow when he arrived at the park and saw it, he complained to the Mets and they removed it.

''I simply told the people I disapprove of it,'' Wilson said. ''It's a matter of common courtesy. Don't just assume. You think I should be flattered. I guess that's what they were thinking. People say I named my dog after you, or my cat. I think: 'O.K., that's your cat. Don't assume I'm going to be flattered that you did it.' ''
The Moo-kie Cow could have been placed in another pasture, but the Parks Department chose not to display it anywhere out of deference to Wilson.

Edgy , it's your Dads jacket which of course has a lot of value to you , would it be easy to recognize it if you see one of the people you help wearing it?( I'm assuming it's the jacket you mentioned in another thread)

What would you do if you saw one of your clients( is that the right term) wearing it , could be a sticky situation.

No, I've confronted thieves before. Confronting guys who I strongly suspect are thieves but I have no goods on, that's trickier.

In reality, the real loss is the keys, which compromises the security of the facility. I've offered to pay to have the locks changed, but the bosses are playing it by ear, which I think is foolish.
