Kicking Cancer's Ass, my wife is!!

d'Kong76
May 22 2008 02:45 PM

As some of you know, my wife who I often refer to here as KB, was diagnosed
with lung cancer in October 2005. I know some of you get her global email updates,
but I feel it's time that we can shout publicly from the roof top that she is going
to be a cancer survivor!

We met with our oncologist today after another scan on Tuesday and there is ab-
solutely no sign of it returning. Frankly, this is not how these things usually go
and she (the oncologist) is/was a bit surprised by the results I think. Cancer
sucks and you never really know what the time bomb might bring next, but she
thinks that if she can go another two years like this she's got it beat.

We actually found out the good news yesterday afternoon but I wanted to go to
our meeting before posting this.

Since I have fifteen seconds of your attention -- if you smoke, stop. If you have
a loved one that does, help them stop -- chemo works for some but it was a
very difficult ordeal for KB to go through on many levels.

When I first got news of KB's cancer (wow, over 2 1/2 years ago), KC ---rather than feel sorry for himself --- declared sternly "we're gonna beat this thing." You should know by know that Kase doesn't talk bigger than he is, and I know he's been no small asset for his wife along the way.

It's more than just Healy-esque CAHN-fidence, but courage and will, with a sober understanding of what you're confronting. I certainly want Kase in my corner when I'm ill, and I salute his and KB's success.

In the interim, smoking ended my Dad's life. My mother still twists her hands over a possible missed diagnosis here and a choice of treatment there. I tell her he died because he poisoned himself. The only thing we can undo is what we're doing to ourselves.

I remember that morning that KB first went into the hospital. D-Dad was out of town for his dad's open heart surgery. I was supposed to meet Kase and KB to tailgate before the Jets game that Sunday - I was online ridiculously early because I couldn't sleep with D-Dad out of town, and Kase wrote to say that they couldn't tailgate because KB had something going on with her lungs.

I often have oddball memories that go along with events of my life. I had just started library school at that point, and in a class discussion I commented without detail that I was having a tough week. My teacher, who didn't know me all that well at that point, e-mailed me to say that if I needed extra time for my assignment because of the Jewish holidays that I could take it. I remember laughing to myself, because the holidays were a non-issue and I had so much else going on in my life at that moment, but I appreciated that he was being thoughtful even though he was so off mark about why I was upset.

About a month or so after KB's news, I learned that another friend of mine had lung cancer. She hasn't fared as well as KB, unfortunately. She's still with us, but the cancer has metastasized. Which confirms Kase's comment about how these things usually go.

Attitude isn't a guarantee (my other friend has always had an amazingly positive attitude), but it goes a long way towards having a positive result in these kinds of battles. And make no mistake, this has been a battle. But KB and Kase have held firm the entire way, and it's wonderful to see that they're reaping the dividends of fighting the good fight.

Can't tell you how much I hate cigarettes.

My dad just recently had a 9 hour surgical proceedure to remove his bladder, prostate and lymph nodes. He now has an ileostomy bag (exterior bag to hold his urine in place of a bladder) for the rest of his life.

This is a direct result of a lifetime of of smoking.

Thanks some more, guys.

I went to S'ville on Saturday, MFS. Did a lot more wandering around than I've
been doing for some reason this visit.

This will be buried here, but I bought a stack of signed and numbered prints of
two Gooden illustrations that the vendor just wanted to get rid of at one price and
when I walked away he cut it in half and I couldn't refuse. The guy just didn't
want them.

I have to send two of them to a guru I know and ask what he thinks of the auto-
graphs. I realize Dwight's autograph isn't worth much, but what the hell.

KC

Somehow I missed this the thread the first time around, though I have known about your wife and her struggle to beat cancer. I can't tell you how happy I am to hear about this. All the best to her continued health.

I have to say, I am amazed at how close I feel to you guys just by bantering on this board. Most of you guys I haven't met, and those of you that I have, only on a limited number of occasions. But I find that my thoughts will wander at times to Edgy's dad, or cooby's dad, or KC's wife when I'm alone with my thoughts. I think about soupcan's douchebag neighbors too, though those feelings are much different. I don't know where I'm going with this...just putting that out there I guess, and this thread seems as good a place as any.

Monday was two years of no-smoking for me. I'm dead serious about this, if you want to quit smoking and know someone else who is committed to it, make a bet. The first one to smoke has to pay the other a hefty sum of money. The thought of having to go to a cash machine, pull out a large wad of bills, then immediately hand them over will outweigh any craving you have. I'm dead serious about this. This bet alone has kept me from cheating.

I just heard the other day that smoking in this country in down below 20% for the first time since they've been tracking such stuff. That's obviously headed in the right direction though I'm amazed it's still that high as we close in on a half-century after the initial gov't warnings and such. On the other hand, the pcts back then might have been double? what they are now.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 20 2008 07:35 PM

Today's Obama double-truck in the Snooze detailed the First Family's workouts. It mentioned that Obama admitted to sneaking a few smokes on the campaign trail this summer but that he's quit.

You might say he's blowing smoke.

btw, he likes basketball and lifting dumbbells at night. The First Lady likes to do her workouts at 4:30 am. One of the first kids likes soccer and the other one gymnastix and tap.

Thanks everyone it's like waking from a nightmare but knowing it
wasn't a dream and knowing others who have had the nightmare
often don't fare so successfully if this run on makes any sense.

The oncologist calls KB her, "poster child" ... we'll roll with that!

They should put her on an actual poster for oncology offices nationwide. Like the Gyros girl, but with a certain finger highlighted.

Re: Kicking Cancer's Ass, my wife is!!

I always feel weird pronouncing it rhyming with "pyro," but that's just how it reads. My Greek friend insists it's "hero" with the Chanukah-sounding h at the beginning. I'm still rhyming it with pyro.

So delicious.

Oh, and I wouldn't mess with KB. Cancer made a bad call right there.

I am sorry smg.
6 years.
I lost my cousin a few months ago and she was fighting it for just about the same amount of time.
And she was so full of life.
Such losses are the toughest.

One of my best girlie-friend's husband has been doing the chemo

My friend Suzanne from http://joinourloop.blogspot.com/ has been cancer free for the past year and a half, though the complications from surgery (damage to lymph nodes and the like) haven't been pleasant.

The gf and I are heading up to Binghamton, where Suz now lives, in a few weeks to join her in the local Kick Breast Cancer's Ass walk. That may not be the exact name; I think the actual name omits the word "ass". But you get the point. If you'd like to throw a few bucks towards the preservation of breasts, feel free to do so here.
