San Diego Padres
24-37
Fourth place in the NL West
8.5 games out and very happy the Rockies suck.

Game 1: Mike Pelfrey, 2-6 vs Josh Banks
Game 2: Johan Santana, 7-3 vs Randy Wolf, 3-4
Game 3: Oliver Perez, 4-4 vs Cha Seung Baek, 1-2
Game 4: Pedro Martinez 1-0 vs Wilfredo Ledezma, 0-2

In a nutshell: The Pads were tanking even before Albert Pujols decided to single-handedly clog their disabled list.

Player to worry about:
Adrian Gonzalez, hitting .299 with 17 homers and 55 RBI is a dismal hitter’s park. Good news is he’s slower than Jason Phillips with no steals. Well, maybe not as slow as Phillips, but he sure isn’t fast.

Pitcher to possibly fear.
Josh Banks, 2-0, 0.00 ERA, has allowed one run, unearned, in his first three games with the Padres, spanning 17 innings.

Player with dumb name:
Khalil Greene. And his .210 stick with make him no one to fear.

Injuries:
Jake Peavy: The Cy Young-winner is getting closer to returning from elbow strain
Shawn Estes: The pitcher broke his thumb on May 29, out for a while, still can’t hit Clemens in the butt.
Chris Young: The pitcher broke his nose blocking a Pujols drive with his face and won’t be back for a while.
Josh Bard: The catcher has a high ankle sprain after Pujols apparently decided to take out the whole battery.
Mark Prior: Done for season. Again. Albert Pujols not involved, as far as we know.
Kevin Cameron: Pitcher out with elbow strain, not to be confused with Mike.
Tim Stauffer: Pitcher out long-term with shoulder issues.
Clay Hensley: Another pitcher out long-term with strain issues.

Ex-Mets:
Heath Bell, who can freely mock us for not using him properly then giving him away with his 3-3, 2.16 ERA.
Tony Clark, who can’t mock up as loudly with a .245 stick and three RBI.
Justin Huber, the Aussie who never quite made the Mets but enjoyed nearly every one of our minor league stops. He’s hitting .209 so stop weeping.
And Estes, of course.

Likely Hall-of-Famers:
Trevor Hoffman: He’s 0-4 with a 5.20 ERA and 12 saves and has developed a penchant for blowing big games, none of which will be mentioned on his plaque.
Greg Maddux: Still trying to get out from under the shadow of his ex-Met brother Mike, Maddux is 3-4 with a 3.48 ERA. Most recently snapped Cubs’ win streak. Has Braves taint.

Stadium issues:
Besides being death to hitters, Petco Park is spared from having he worst stadium name in all of baseball by the even-more embarrassing Minute Made Park and Yankee Stadium.

Uniform issues:
The Padres, created in 1969, have yet to have uniforms that are not horrendous, ranging from butt-ugly in the early years to ultra-bland drabbies they wear today. The “sand-colored” road uniforms are indeed the ugliest in the game. Players are so embarrassed they often wear camouflage hoping to blend in and not be seen.

Yeech

My first KTE, so be kind!

You are very kind. But I corrected a typo.. it was supposed to say "worst stadium name in all of baseball."

Funny, but true. With all their injuries, the Padres should dress in medical scrubs.

Nice job with the KTE.

Well done Michigan! I feel much better informed about our upcoming foes.

Yeah, neutral and boring, but more-or-less classy.

Well done MGIM. Very entertaining. You've set the bar high for my upcoming KTE against Texas next week.

Nice work MGIM. I wonder if a player has ever refused to take the field becasue he hated the shirt.

All the camo in the world isn't hiding Tony Gwynn these days.

I'm going to guess no.

I like the color of the Pads road uni's, too. It's out there a little, but it's understated. Only weird thing is between the "SD" on the hat, "Padres" on the home whites, and "San Diego" on the road uni's, they've got 3 font styles that don't really have anything to do with one another. I think.

I like those road jerseys as well.

San Diego is a military town so while the camos are U-G-L-Y (and they ain't got no alibi...) it is understandably accepted.

As to the different fonts - I know that there is rule in graphic design that when mixing and matching fonts you should always put a serif with a sans serif.

It seems that all three of those fonts have serifs.

"All the camo in the world isn't hiding Tony Gwynn these days"

I'm not sure one of the tanks our cammo-wearing soldiers ride in could hide Tony Gwynn these days.

Maybe. I guess they go together a little better than I thought. The bend in the "San Diego" threw me off, but otherwise the "S" and "D" on the shirt are somewhat close to the cap. Something about the fonts doesn't look right, though and I don't get a real good sense of their identity. They've also got an ocean feel that doesn't jibe with the Padre name. I just don't get 'em is all. The road hat looks pretty good with the road uni, though.

At the time they were unveiled, I remember reading something about how the team wanted something that would recall beaches and water.

My beef with that is that the team has a pretty cool name, and a unique one. And the Swinging Friar is a cool mascot. And they pretty much discard all of it for a bland set that looks like it was designed by Hallmark.

They may be bland, but that's okay for road uniforms. I loved the simple grey uniforms with the simple black BOSTON that the Red Sox wore in the 80's.

And I think the ugliest uniforms currently in use are those black home jerseys that the Rockies wear, with the flared shoulders. They're so effeminate that they might as well be pink.

Oh, those things are atrocious! And they usually wear them with the black undershirts, which makes no sense at all!

Sounds real nice, Rogers. And that means you haven't been tossed from a chick's bed either, so by my count, you're batting 1.000.

Have fun and bring us a win.
