2008 NL ASG Voting

[url=http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080528&content_id=2786521&vkey=allstar2008&fext=.jsp]Update # 1[/url] Can't say this was unexpected the way things been going at Shea 1st Base, Lance Berkman of the Astros in a tight race with the Cardinals' Albert Pujols with the Cubs' Derek Lee not that far behind. 2nd Base, Chase Utley of the Phillies has this one all but wrapped up, and he actually leads all NLers. Luis Castillo shows up in the top 5. 3rd Base, Chipper Jones of the Braves by a little less than 100,000 votes over David Wright. Short Stop, Marlins' Hanley Ramirez leads with Miguel Tejada of the Astros and Jose Reyes not too far behind. Catcher, The Cubs' Geovany Soto leads over Brian McCann of the Braves. Outfield, The Cubs' Alfonso Soriano, and Kosuke Fukudome, along with the Reds' Ken Griffey Jr. are your top vote getters with Carlos Beltran about 48,000 shy of the leaders, Matt Holliday of the Rockies is just below him.

pathetic that castillo is top 5, and the way beltran's numbers look he shouldn't be attracting many votes either, the mets all-star will likely be david wright as a reserve on name value alone, though more deservng (as of right now) would be Church or Wagner.

Checking the all-star voting totals on May 28th. OE: Find a lineup for tonights game and post it ... I swear the games from Shea are always tardy when it comes to online lineups.

Considering that the first wave of voting usually favors only "name" players (they start the process so early it almost has to) the voters here are on the right path for the most part. Berkman & Soto deserve to be at or near the top as does Chipper over Wright. Maybe a few over-zealous Cubbie fans but that's no biggie. It's all especially good when seen in contrast to the AL voters and their picks for the BoYank-Star Team where it's all pin-stripers and beaneaters plus that Ichiro guy - about half of which (maybe less) actually deserve the top spot.

Yeah seems like every single year since the "rivalry" went super nova thanks to ESPN and the blogsphere that it's Red Sox v Yankees at just about every position. IIRC Robin Ventura was leading the pack for quite a while in the 2002 voting, but a surge of Sox Nation got Shea Hillenbrand the nod.

It seems equally likely that Wagner could be the Mets representative, if they're only going to get one and if none of the starters are chosen. He has been as lights-out as any closer in the NL, and I'd even bet that he'd get the call in the ASG in an NL save situation (if those things still happened).

I think Santana has a decent shot. And while Wright may have a tougher time given that Larry was hitting .400 or something, I still think it's likely Reyes will win the voting there. Yes, the Marlins are in first place, but they have only 10,000 fans.

Why care that somebody is in the top five? The whole process is farcical. The least concern should be that it ensures the right guy finishes fifth.

I don't think I will tune in this year , certainly not for the pre-game orgy to celebrate " the stadium".

Seriously?) and the mandatory "one guy from each team" rule, the rosters are mostly a joke. Plus we'll get beaten over the head with the whole MFY/Boston angle and the demise of "The House that Chambliss Built." Not to mention the continued poor showing every year by the NL squad. Not much left to sell to me.

For me, the All-Star Game is one of the casualties of my reduced interest following the 1994 strike. I haven't watched an All-Star Game since then, and I can't imagine anything they can do to get me back.

I love the All-Star Game, and travel to attend the FanFest if the game is anywhere in the Midwest. I have programs and pennants from games going back to the 1970s, and I try to get a logo cap and t-shirt each year, and a BP jersey, when I can get one on the cheap. That said, I refused to buy anything other than a program and pennant from this year's debacle. Freaking MFYs. They ruin everything.

Not quite that bad! I probably have about 70. I have a mix of game-worn and authentics. I've slowed down dramatically now that they're stupidly expensive. I used to get a bunch directly through minor-league teams, and my parent used to live near the Manny's Baseball Land factory store, where there were lots of bargains. There was much weeping when that closed. And I used to go to the National Sports Collectors Convention -- I had a column in the sports section -- there was one dealer, a nice family, that bought game-worn jerseys from the teams. The stars would be crazy expensive, but the fringe guys and coaches were usually affordable. That's how I have my Duffy Dyer Brewers' jersey! This week I bought a Johan Santana Mets jersey, an authentic, but not-game worn, with the proper patches, for just $30 on eBay. My favorite might be my Matt Murray Braves jersey. He was up for a cup of coffee one year, and was a bigger guy, so I can wear it. I used to wear them everywhere, now usually just to games or other types of events.
