Morgan and Miller

They can make a two hour game seem like a five hour game!

Fuck it. I love these guys.

You'd think by now people would *stop* being surprised that Morgan is capable of making an ignorant comment, and that out-of-town broadcasters aren't quite up to par with their local counterparts and the local fans. Really.

I like Jon Miller. I think he's great. Great cadence and pace, voice of a talking singer, calls the exciting plays well, sounds friendly, strives to keep things moving, knows a good deal but never in a rush to prove anything to me. One of the very best there is. If I had to go listen to a slate of national baseball games on a desert island for the rest of my life and could choose only one non-jock announcer, he'd get serious consideration.

Morgan? He flapped his arm like a maniac when he hit. And he was an awesome player before we ever dreamed of advanced metrics showing us just how good. He was a member of the Big Red Machine which everyone of my age knows was the greatest team of our youth with players who all wound up in the HOF whether they deserved it or not. Every kid who thought he was hot shit in little league did the flapping thing.

Again, we *know* he often says ridiculous things. But his voice is a nice complement to Miller's. And are you really so worried for some other schmuck in some other market coming away with a wrong impression of the Mets as the result of something Morgan says? If that fan can get fooled, doesn't he deserve it?

Jon & Jon for the World Series. NOW!!!!

Eh. I disagree.

I like Jon Miller. But Morgan drives me nuts. Not as bad as McCarver, though.

Miller is also funny. Impersonates other announcers uncannily.

These guys are the suckiest bunch of suck that ever sucked.

Actually, no. Buck and McCarver are more irritating to me.

I will say that I catch Miller occasionally on XM as he is the regular voice of the SF Giants on the radio. And he is far more listenable on the radio than on TV as he has to spend less time yapping and more time calling the game.

But Morgan stinks out loud. Maybe I'm on overload with back to back national games and general blah blah blah-iness.

This is what I hear during an ESPN broadcast:
Miller: boring boring boring
Morgan:SOMETHING RIDICULOUS!
Miller: boring boring boring
Morgan: THE SAME RIDICULOUS THING I JUST SAID, ONLY POORLY REPHRASED!
Miller: boring boring the East Podunk 500 next week, catch NASCAR on Fox.

And no, I don't know why Miller's doing Fox promos on ESPN.

That made it seem more realistic, honestly.

Miller I can take , kinda like him and I do like how he seems to be often taking the piss out of Morgan.

I think fans have a tendancy (one that seems to be growing) to over-analyze announcers to the point where they're looking for reasons to hate them and seeing slights against their team behind every comment.

And although I'll cop to there being a handful of announcers who have gotten under my skin to the point where I'm yelling things at the TV and diving for the mute button (Fran Healy, Berman at times, and maybe one or two others) Miller & Morgan aren't even close to that level, and neither is McCarver.

Miller's great. I am spoiled because he does SF games with Mike Krukow--whom I know many here hate-- and Duane Kuiper. That's a helluva trio.

His impersonation of Vin Scully is astounding.

What ever happened to Healy? He just kinda vanished.

What have I missed? Many here hate Mike Krokow?

I mean, yeah, he beat the Mets a lot, but in 1977-1983, but that didn't exactly swing our fortunes. I couldn't tell you bupkis about his announcing performance.

I can't tell you much about Kuiper, but it was, interestingly enough, misplaced confidence in Kuiper that led the Giants to trade Joe Morgan.

For Mike Krukow!

I like Miller.
I really do.

And once I got past the fact that he views everything with the exuberance of a child I began to enjoy listening to him.
He also must have the patience of a saint to work the booth with Morgan.

Every once in a while I will hear him throw in a zinger towards Joe, but he does it with such panache that Joe doesn't even realize its a zinger.
But mostly he knows he has a job to do, and its along side Morgan, and he makes the best of it and shows me he's a team player.

I like him.

(a cut and paste from the IGT, for the record,..
and posted here before Elster yells at me)

I kid 88 :)

I love Kuik and Krup... but I recall some here (Soupy??) who hated Krukow's status as a Met-killer back in the late 70s and early 80s, and the fact that Ralph Kiner doted on him as they both went to the same high school. I think Grimm once said that Krukow wore a smirk like he had "just f'ed your sister" when beating those decrepit Mets teams, and that he wanted to wipe it right off his face. (If I have the principals involved here wrong, I apologize)

If you have the chance to listen to a KNBR feed for this series, do it-- these guys are a real treat.

I keep picturing the scene in "Rocky," where Stallone's in grey sweats, carrying two buckets of spit around Mickey's gym. That's Fran these days.
