How about that? "Dock" is part of his mysterious middle name. This would be like calling Jon Matlack "Trump."

Bench candidate takes quantum leap
BY PAUL SUELLENTROP

Before getting to the story of Charles Zodock "Dock" Doyle, let's establish that he is not going to win the Johnny Bench Award.

Recognition tonight as the nation's best college catcher will almost surely go to Florida State's Buster Posey, adding to a haul that already includes two Player of the Year honors.

"If I'm a betting man, my odds are with him," Doyle said.

A few months ago, a betting man would not have picked Doyle to make the cut of three finalists for the Bench Award. He caught 19 games in 2007 for Coastal Carolina and did not rate a spot on the first watch list of candidates.

By April, his performance demanded inclusion all the way to tonight's Greater Wichita Sports Banquet. Hall of Famer Johnny Bench will hand out the award, now in its ninth year. Posey, a semifinalist in 2007, and Stanford's Jason Castro will join Doyle at the banquet and a catcher's clinic today.

"My biggest goal this year was to get Coastal to a super regional," Doyle said. "For myself, I wanted to hit .320, .330, something like that."

Doyle, now playing for the Kingsport (Tenn.) Mets of the Appalachian League, did much more than that as a junior. He won Big South Conference Player of the Year honors and led the Chanticleers with a .370 batting average, a .675 slugging percentage and 72 RBIs.

Improvement behind the plate, however, was just as important to Coastal coach Gary Gilmore. Doyle played behind a senior as a sophomore. He dedicated the months before his junior season to defense and it showed with his throwing and receiving.

"His defensive skills are really the thing we're going to miss the most," Gilmore said.

Doyle, from Conway, S.C., also served as the DH as a sophomore. Catching full-time as a junior made preparation and concentration easier.

"Knowing I was going to be in the lineup, it's different when you go to the park knowing you're going to play," Doyle said. "I think that helped a tremendous amount."

With Doyle as one of the stars, Coastal hosted and won the Conway Regional. The Chanticleers lost to North Carolina 2-0 in a best-of-3 super regional.

Doyle, a hometown kid who turned into a star, signed soon after with the Mets. He will continue to go by "Dock," a nickname he picked up as a child. His father and grandfather are also named Charles Zodock, although he is not sure of the name's origins.

"Don't ask me," he said. "It's a family name."

What’s up? Dock!
By Ed Shakespeare
for The Brooklyn Paper

The Cyclones have called up catcher fifth-round draft pick Dock Doyle from Kingsport.

The six-foot, 195-pounder was drafted out of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina), where the lefty hit.370 with 18 homers and 72 RBIs in 61 games.

He was a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, honoring college baseball’s best catcher, and was ranked as the third best catcher in the country by Rivals.com.

In 41 games at Kingsport (one step below the Cyclones) Doyle hit .308 with 27 runs, 20 RBI, 11 doubles, one triple, but did not homer.

He said his toughest challenge since going pro was the consistent, high-speed pitching.

“The biggest thing for me was just adjusting to the velocity, of seeing 90 to 92 [MPH] every day,” said Doyle. “You see that speed in college, but just not as much, and here you see it every day.”

In college players use metal bats, so Doyle is also getting used to using wooden bats in professional baseball.

“It was a little bit of an adjustment,” he said. “But I had used them in summer ball.”

On top of that, Doyle also has to get used to the pressured environment at Keyspan Park.

“Kingsport was really laid back,” said the new Cyclone. “Brooklyn is a lot different atmosphere; they want to win here.”

Growing up in Conway, South Carolina hardly made Doyle into a Mets’ rooter. Instead, he was cheering on their big rivals at that time.

“I was a big Atlanta Braves fan,” said the candid catcher. “A Chipper Jones fan.”

Doyle played in his first game for Brooklyn on Aug. 23 and went 0-for-4 as a DH against Lowell.

He’ll have more chances to hit, but readers first have to know about the origins of Dock, his nickname. After some friendly prodding, Dock ’fessed up.

“It will come out sooner or later,” he admitted.

“Actually, my middle name is Zodock, and my father and grandfather have the same nickname.

“I am really Charles Zoduck Doyle III.”

I'm sure he means when batting but I wonder if catching pitchers that throw that hard everyday takes an adjustment as well.

Why? Are the wooden bats lighter? Heavier?

Smaller sweet spot. You can hit the ball hard with a much bigger area on an aluminum bat, and that can lead to bad habits.

One thing that helped Lastings Milledge fall from a higher draft rating a few months earlier to the Mets spot was that he didn't look particuarly good in a wood bat scouting workout.

We saw Dock tonight at Brooklyn: Singled, doubled, lined out to center, as I recall. May also have walked. Nice swing as shown here. Caught a decent game as far as I could tell, though did a let a WP go by to score a run.

Looks like he knows what he's doing, though not a very big fella.

Re: Dock Doyle: In the Pipeline

Dock is participating the "Step Camp" for Mets' promising prospects, which is nice.

Wally Backman is supposed to be running the thing and invitees also include (per Rubin):

Kyle Allen, Eric Beaulac, Robert Carson, Jeurys Familia, Brad Holt, Armando Rodriguez, Josh Stinson, Scott Moviel, Doyle, Nelfi Zapata, Lucas Duda, Wilmer Flores, Reese Havens, Jefry Marte, Jordanny Valdespin, Stefan Welch, Carlos Guzman, Juan Lagares, Cesar Puello, Sean Ratliff and Pedro Zapata.

Dock never became my Facebook pal, but there's a fan page up for him now, seems to be populated mostly with Cougars. Hmmmm. You go get 'em!

Dock is in Savannah where he's part of a catching platoon with that German kid.

You'd think this is a nice spot for him, being a Southeast guy and all, and I think he'll need to be [crossout:21dpoh71]banging several haggard Georgia cougars[/crossout:21dpoh71] staying healthy and hitting like crazy this year to get onto that big-league radar.

Yeah, sure, you're all impressed with Doc Doyle but have you seen his draft-eligible cousin, Mac? It'd be kinda cool if the Mets also got him.

Wofford's Mac Doyle among college's elite at catcher

JOHN BYRUM/john.byrum@shj.com
Wofford’s Mac Doyle has become one of the best hitting catchers in college baseball.
Wofford sophomore Mac Doyle has become one of the best-hitting catchers in college baseball. His goal is to be the best-hitting catcher at the family holiday gatherings.

Doyle, who played at Conway High School, leads the Southern Conference in batting average (.423), slugging percentage (.929), doubles (18) and total bases (118). He is second in home runs (13) and RBIs (47). He leads the country in slugging percentage.

And yet he ranks second at the family dinners behind first-cousin Dock Doyle, who left Coastal Carolina as a a fifth-round pick of the New York Mets. He lived down the street, also went to Conway and turned over the catching reins to close kin four grades behind. The elder Doyle is in Class A with the Savannah (Ga.) Sand Gnats.

"He set the bar high in our family," Mac Doyle said. "I feel like I have a lot to prove to myself, my teammates and my family. I'm just trying to do my best to catch up with Dock."

Mac Doyle was the 4A high school player of the year at Conway, leading the team to the school's first state championship baseball series before losing to Boiling Springs. He batted .456 that season.

He hit .281 with eight homers and 30 RBIs as a regular in the Wofford lineup as a freshman, but he said it was a wake-up call.

"After a pretty successful senior year, maybe I thought too much of myself," Doyle said. "I didn't think it was going to be as hard as it was. Last year really opened my eyes to see how tough college baseball was going to be. It definitely hit me early."

After every game, even the rare bad ones, Doyle pulls Wofford head coach Todd Interdonato aside to pick his brain.

"Mac's commitment level is the thing that's impressed me the most," Interdonato said. "Whether it's a good game or a bad game, he comes up and asks me to go through his at-bats pitch-by-pitch. He has total commitment to every game, every practice, every at-bat and every swing."

Doyle is sharing the catching duties with fellow sophomore David Roney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and usually serves as the designated hitter the rest of the time. The Terriers can do that because Roney is batting .323 and is the better defensive player.

"We told them when we recruited them that neither one was going to catch every game," Interdonato said. "I believe you need two good catchers, and we are fortunate to have two good ones. I think they're helping each other out."

"I think it keeps me fresh," Doyle said. "Last year, I caught a good number of games and it might have worn me out. This year, I feel great. Being the designated hitter is pretty tough mentally. The rest has been good for me in the long run, but if you have a bad at-bat, you sit there and think about it for two or three innings. When I get behind the plate, I like it because it really helps me stay in the game."

This guy reports that one of the prospects the Mets might be looking at come deadline time is Tigers reliever Chance Ruffin.

Though a Chance Ruffin/Dock Doyle battery would be awesome. And after the game, they would investigate crimes in the 1920s.
